For those who have been living under a rock. Sony’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse tells the story of Miles Morales. Miles was introduced in Marvel comics in 2011 in an alternate universe where Peter Parker/Spider-Man, died and Miles became a new Spider-Man after he was also similarly bitten by a altered spider. This movie tells his story.

I’ve seen plenty of other great animated films this year but nothing has matched what Sony did with this one. From the animation style, the tight plot, to representation of a character that is outside of the standard white Cis-male hero quest Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse manages to delicately balance story, reverence, acclaim and maintain the feel of the source material like no other “Superhero film” in 2018. Going back to a print medium Titan Comics has put out a glorious 96 page collectors guide for the film.

Page after page shows off the stills from the film to illustrate scenes and convey visual information that really put a spotlight on the film’s unique design. These images easily translate to the page and reestablishes a comic book feel that the film emulates. The book also covers all the major players in the film with detailed breakdowns and shares the film makers thoughts throughout. Behind the scenes information here is really telling in how the film came together. Aside from the directors (Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, & Bob Persichetti) and animation staff, the book gets some input from Shameik Moore as he is the first to portray Miles on the big screen.

I would of liked to see more concept images of the world the characters live in. Each of the Spider-people who are in the film have their own world as the city is a huge part of making them their particular world’s Spider-hero. I just wish the world Miles lives in got more of the layers peeled back for this book. However, for the amount of pages of content and price point, $19.99, for this hardcover book it is a great addition for any fan of the film and Spider-Man enthusiast in general to make a part of their collection.

The Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse: The Official Movie Special is out in stores now so pick it up at your local comic shops and books stores.

Kaos Blac
Kaosblac@comicattack.com
Twitter: kaosblac

New “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” Trailer Breakdown

Cameron Crump

Cameron

Marvel

News

Perfect Cruelty

Previews

banner

Into the Spider-Verse

Miles Morales

Peter Parker

Sony Pictures

Spider Gwen

Spider-Ham

Spider-Man

[dropcap]O[/dropcap]h boy! New York Comic-Con is getting ready to touch down in Manhattan’s Jacob Javits Center this week but swinging into town early is a brand new Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse trailer giving out lots of new plot details (some might say too much), as well as showing off a lot more of the spider set pieces and fantastic animation that’s only been teased up until this point.

So how about we do a big old trailer breakdown and go over some of the new information we can glean from this latest offering from Sony Animation Studios.

1. Peter Parker’s Perspective
Unlike the previous trailers which have been largely teasers of the film as a whole or done from the perspective of Miles Morales and his story, this new trailer starts off from the perspective of Jake Johnson’s Peter Parker. Johnson brings his easy-going affable slacker persona that he made famous on shows like New Girl and in the recent comedy Tag to the role of the OG web swinger, stepping into the driver’s seat to reveal that the Peter Parker and this iteration is even further along in his career then he is depicted as in most Spider-Man cartoons and video games. In his own universe this Spider-Man enjoys the fame and notoriety that we would be familiar with in our own real world. Peter Parker in the trailer has comic books written about him, merchandising which are included but not limited to middle-of-the-road subpar popsicle, breakfast cereals, and t-shirts (Worn by adorable little girls of color the world over). This Spider-Man has even recorded a Christmas album which features such classics as “Spidey, it’s Cold Outside” “Joy to the World (That I just Saved) and It’s Beginning to Look A lot Like A Non-Denominational Holiday.

Our Peter Parker is a veteran of the superhero game. Having saved the world dozens of times by his own account and indeed pulling off the two-point conversion of actually getting the girl of his dreams, which seems to be a fashion model Mary Jane Watson, a version of Mary Jane which seems to have fallen out of favor as being a model is not considered a very empowered career for a woman. This could make this version of Peter Parker’s corner of the spider universe, way closer to Marvel Comic’s 616 version than almost any other depiction in recent memory. It is this veteran Parker that is going to be acting as a mentor to the Spider-Man at the heart of the narrative…

2. More Miles Morales!

We don’t get to see a whole lot of new information for Miles but we do get some more looks at his costume and peeks into his mentor-mentee relationship with Peter Parker. Miles’ father, played by the impossibly talented Mahershala Ali, is still hitting home those loving father/judgmental cop/kind of abusing his authority in problematic ways/dramatic irony problems with vigilantes notes that are necessary for Spider-Man family members. In addition we also get a flash of Miles’s mother play by the lovely Luna Lauren Velez who you may remember for her turn as Lieutenant Maria LaGuerta on the Showtime series Dexter. We get to see Miles in his own more familiar suit as well as trying out a hilarious imitation of the classic Spider-Man outfit and we get to see a more full reaction out of him as he encounters some of the other stars of this animated feature such as.

3. Spider Gwen and Friends

Here’s the big reveal: we get tons more footage of characters we’ve only heard about including a Spider-Man Noir voiced by none other than Nicolas Cage, we get splashes oven anime inspired Spider-Man with its own Mecha and a hilarious turn by comedian John Mulaney as Peter Porker the Spider-Ham. Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy comes across with the little screen time she gets with all the brash attitude that made her character a fan favorite and together this abridged Spider Crew has more than enough potential to make some of the most stunning and engaging set pieces that have been seen in recent memory. Spider-Ham seems to be played as a pitch perfect comic relief to the gravitas of a sulky Spider-Noir Nick Cage and if the comics are anything to go by then we may see the sparks fly between young Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales…so I guess spoiler alert, maybe?

4. The Villain(s) and the Plot

Based off of what we see in the trailer the Kingpin played by Liev Schreiber seems to have opened rifts to parallel dimensions using their version of the Large Hadron Collider, moving away from the story line in the comic book where multi-dimensional totem hunters tracked spider powered people by use of an inter-dimensional web of fate to which all spider-powered people are connected. I mean…whatever. One flimsy science excuse is just as good as another. But now that we know the idea is the spiders have to team up to defeat the Kingpin and figure out a way to get home you have to wonder what other surprises does Into the Spider-Verse have in store for us. Any single spider can defeat the Kingpin, so I have a hard time believing he’s the big bad. Eagle-eye viewers might catch glimpses of Tombstone as well as the versions of Scorpion

and the Green Goblin from the Ultimate Universe so they definitely are going to have a hand in the plot in some way. Maybe we might just get to see Morlun and his siblings from the comics as well, but even having seen all that is in the trailer, I still wonder if into the spider verse has any more tricks up his sleeve. What gigantic existential threat (besides the tearing apart of the universe due to the Kingpin’s experiment) will our heroes face? And speaking of questions…

5. Questions!!!!

Will Gwen and Miles get together?
Why was Spider-Ham moist in his intro scene?
How ridiculous will Nicolas Cage be in this film?
Are you actually going to make a Spider-Man team-up movie and not include Spider-Man 2099?

Well true Believers, all these questions and more will be answered in theaters on December 14th.

I know I can’t wait and I’m sure you can’t either.

Cameron Crump
cameron@comicattack.net

[signoff]

Movie Multiverse: In My Opinion, Tom Hardy Being Venom Is Not A Big Deal

Nile Fortner

Marvel

Nile Fortner

Opinion

Spider-Man

banner

Columns

Comic Book Movies

Marvel Comics

Movie Mondays

Movie Multiverse

Movie News

Sony Pictures

Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy as Venom

Venom

Video

Sony Pictures Has Tom Hardy as Venom Lately, the internet, movie fans, and comic book fans have been buzzing for Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises, Mad Max: Fury Road) being casted as Venom for the Sony superhero cinematic universe. I like Tom Hardy as an actor. He truly is one of the best actors working today. However, Sony has had a bad track record trying to develop a superhero cinematic universe. A track record so bad, that Marvel Studios stepped in to help. But Sony seems like they are so desperate to stand on their own. Sony wants to create a solo standalone Venom movie, to really kick things off the ground. It has one element that many horror sequels forget to add in. The events of the first film have a major influence on the events of the sequel. Rather than have the characters sane and acting like nothing happened, or start off with the same plot with a bunch of new characters. Stella Oleson (Kiele Sanchez) is what you’d expect from anyone whose hometown was massacred by a bunch of violent vampires. Halfway sane, on meds, and emotionally distant. The only thing that’s driving her is the urge to prove that vampires do indeed exist. As with most horror stories, nobody believes her, and the events in Barstow are covered up as a massive pipeline explosion (I suppose pipeline explosions cause decapitations and the few witnesses to forget everything). And as with most horror stories, Oleson happens to stumble upon a few misfits who do believe her. Mainly due to the fact that they too have lost loved ones from vampires and are planning to hunt the vampire matriarch, Lilith (Mia Kirshner).

Carrie III

Another aspect different than your run-of-the-mill horror film, is the production values. Granted, it’s obviously lower budget than its predecessor and has several flaws. Such as the one thing I absolutely hate in low-budget films – fake shooting where they add CGI gunfire and shake the camera. But the cinematography. Although the action scenes leave better execution to be desired, Ketai knows how to make the most out of lighting and set designs. The use of lighting, shadows, and steam gives it a dark grit that even bigger budget films fail to achieve. It’s amazing how great technique can make a mundane set and budget look extraordinary.

Speaking of good use with budget, praise should be given for composer Andres Boulton, who matches the film’s tone with a dark and not too soft ambient guitar and synth driven soundtrack.

Movie Rule #1144: Every safe house has an arsenal behind a wall.

However, the buck stops there. After being impressive for about the first ten minutes, the film recedes back into being the usual sub par direct-to-video sequel. This film has twice the action of 30 Days of Night, and although that sounds like a strong point, the execution fails to make it anywhere spectacular. It could be blamed on shaky cameras and not enough interesting choreography. But the culprit is the fact that it lacks the suspense and tension that the first film had. You’re not going to be sitting at the edge of your seat when the vampires come out to play, nor are you going to get your wham! bam! action moments. So the resulting scenes will occasionally turn 30DoN:DD into a bore fest that will make you wish they had instead written in some scares or character development.

In fact, the Achilles’ Heel here is what made the first film interesting. With 30DoN:DD, the characters lack the dynamic that 30DoN had. It’s true that 30DoN‘s characters were stock characters, but they were very well-written stock characters that sucked you into the story and kicked the tension factor up by a couple of notches. Here, we just get people whose loved ones were killed by vampires and are very pissed off about it. If you like horror movies with dumb people you’ve come to the right place, because these people are very, very stupid. Though nobody is quite close to being as annoying as Amber (Diora Baird). You know the character that shouts hysterically when she’s supposed to be quiet, blames everyone, and accidentally steps on something noisy that wakes up the whole neighborhood? That’s her. Vampire hunter Todd (Harold Perrineau) might’ve been an interesting character if they didn’t kill him early on (a not so surprising spoiler…). The vampires are actually given a clearer motivation, and vampire matriarch Lilith is creepy, bordering on sexy, but still creepy. However, just like the humans, the film doesn’t make a strong attempt to throw in some character development or at least let us get a better glimpse at who they are.

They say that every story needs an eye opening hook.

From a technical standpoint 30 Days of Night: Dark Days is a film directed with quality and precision. But the truth of the matter is that 30DoN:DD suffers from a weak plot, actors who are forced to recite lines rather than being able to play intelligent characters, and one stupid ending. If this film had a better script and story, it could’ve been an underrated gem that deserves to be seen. Although I suppose that can be said for most direct-to-video films.

Andrew Hudson
ahudson@comicattack.net
@Hudsonian

Marc Webb to Direct Spider-Man Reboot!

andrewhurst

Columns

Hurst

Marvel

Movies

News

Spider-Man

Columbia Pictures

Marc Webb

Sony Pictures

Earlier this month Marvel and Columbia Pictures announced they are moving forward with a Spider-Man reboot with a new cast, director, and all-around production team. The script by James Vanderbilt is said to be based off of the Ultimate Spider-Man comics, and will take Spider-Man back to high school where he’ll face typical teenage issues along with super hero level crises.

“A decade ago we set out on this journey with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire and together we made three ‘Spider-Man’ films that set a new bar for the genre. When we began, no one ever imagined that we would make history at the box-office and now we have a rare opportunity to make history once again with this franchise. Peter Parker as an ordinary young adult grappling with extraordinary powers has always been the foundation that has made this character so timeless and compelling for generations of fans. We’re very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter’s roots and we look forward to working once again with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin on this new beginning,” said Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

“Working on the ‘Spider-Man’ movies was the experience of a lifetime for me. While we were looking forward to doing a fourth one together, the studio and Marvel have a unique opportunity to take the franchise in a new direction, and I know they will do a terrific job,” said Sam Raimi.

Earlier today it was announced that Marc Webb, director of the Golden Globe nominated film (500) Days of Summer, will be directing the reboot, and working closely with Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin in developing the new Spider-Man later this year.

“This is a dream come true and I couldn’t be more aware of the challenge, responsibility, or opportunity. Sam Raimi’s virtuoso rendering of Spider-Man is a humbling precedent to follow and build upon. The first three films are beloved for good reason. But I think the Spider-Man mythology transcends not only generations but directors as well. I am signing on not to ‘take over’ from Sam. That would be impossible. Not to mention arrogant. I’m here because there’s an opportunity for ideas, stories, and histories that will add a new dimension, canvas, and creative voice to Spider-Man,” said Webb.

In addition to two Golden Globe nominations including Best Picture for his first feature film, (500) Days of Summer, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, Webb has been nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Feature. He was also awarded the Spotlight Award, which honors outstanding directorial debuts, by the National Board of Review. He has several MTV VMAs including 2009’s Best Director award for Green Day’s “21 Guns,” 2006 Best Rock Video for AFI’s “Miss Murder,” and Best Group Video for The All-American Rejects’ “Move Along.” The Music Video Production Association honored him in 2006 as the Director of the Year for his work with Weezer, AAR, and My Chemical Romance.

John Malkovich confirmed that he would be playing the Vulture in the fourth Spider-Man film, however, with the decision to reboot the series, there has been no word on if Malkovich will still be playing the role.

There have been no news or rumors on casting except Webb stating that he intends to hire unknowns for the film.

The new Spider-Man is slated to hit theaters in 2012 with production starting later this year.

This is great news, if you ask me. I loved the the first two Rami Spider-Man films, and after the debacle that was Spider-Man 3, I’m all for a Spider-Man reinvention. Maybe this time Marvel will add more cross over potential into the new series like Iron Man and Incredible Hulk. Perhaps Mr. Parker will be web slinging side-by-side with Iron Man and Captain America on the big screen in the Avengers movie.

Sources: Columbia Pictures, Superherohype.com

Andrew Hurst
andrewhurst@hotmail.com
