Studios is pleased to announce that the Day Men Vol. 1 trade paperback, which collects the first four issues of the thrilling series by industry legend Brian Stelfreeze (Wednesday Comics) and writers Matt Gagnon (Freelancers) and Michael Alan Nelson (Hexed), is set to debut this November at the introductory price of just $9.99. Critically acclaimed, Day Men features a complex network of secret vampire covens that control the world and the human bodyguards—or Day Men—who work for and protect their masters during the day. Day Men is currently under option for the big screen by Universal Studios.
“November 5th is a big day for Day Men,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief and the creator and co-writer of Day Men, Matt Gagnon. “We were able to pull off what I was hoping for: a same-day release of the volume one trade and issue #5, which is the start of our new arc ‘Ex Curia.’ We wanted to give all of our awesome retailers and readers an easy access point to the series. We’re pricing the trade at $9.99, so anybody can get caught up on the entire story thus far for 14 bucks. Our beloved ‘vampire noir’ series is back in a big way next month, and we can’t wait to share it with you!”

For thousands of years, the world has been controlled by the “50 Families,” a secret network of vampire covens engaged in a timeless struggle for power. But when the sun rises, the vampires are forced to employ the services of a human who acts as their daytime fixer and protector. Trained for centuries to be the mortal soldiers of their vampire employers, the Day Men go forth at sunrise, alone into the world, to do the bidding of their sleeping benefactors.

Praise for Day Men:

“Day Men…is a great example of a book in which execution is superior to concept. Very often, it’s the other way round.” – Comic Book Resources

“Breathing new life in what has felt like an overplayed concept, Day Men shows us there is plenty more to the idea of vampires and the world they live in.” – Comic Vine

“…each new issue of Day Men succeeds a little bit more in establishing a unique tone and approach to the vampire concept.” – IGN

“With Draculas and Lestats in the world, it’s refreshing to get a new viewpoint on the vampire mythos. Day Men delivers on that promise…” – Geeked Out Nation

“…Day Men has a lot of potential and exceeds initial expectations. Matt Gagnon and Michael Alan Nelson write a great multi-dimensional plot that balances well with Brian Stelfreeze’s detailed artwork. Day Men is a great read for any vampire fan.” – Major Spoilers

“If you’re into a rich, alternate vampire story, Matt Gagnon & Michael Alan Nelson serve up a meaty one you can really sink your teeth into!” – Word of the Nerd

“This book is a perfect example of how the script and the art working together can make for some pretty magical storytelling.” – Comic Bastards

“There isn’t one panel that won’t just ‘wow’ you, whether it’s filled with attack dogs defending a distillery or a Virgo family meeting. Between Stelfreeze’s pencils and Darrin Moore’s colors you will be hard pressed to find a book that looks better than this.” – Comic Attack

The Day Men Vol. 1 TP collects issues #1-4 and will be available for purchase at the local comic shop nearest you on November 5th—the same day that issue #5 comes out—and carries an introductory retail price of $9.99. Studios
Writer(s): Matt Gagnon & Michael Alan Nelson
Artist: Brian Stelfreeze
Cover: Brian Stelfreeze & Darrin Moore

The war between the houses of Virgo and Ramses is escalating, which is making things very rough for David. As the Day Man for the Virgo family, his comfort is their least concern as they plot on where he’ll be best utilized next. Having impressed some in the family he’s been given a very delicate task with multiple objectives. However, his problem isn’t only the rival vampire house, but their Day Man, Burner, as well. He’s got one hell of a reputation along with the experience that makes him a very dangerous man.

Ever since the first issue was reviewed on Tales From The Water Cooler I’ve been patiently waiting for this one to hit the shelves. Well, after reading Day Men #2 it can be safely said that the wait was well worth it! In just two issues Gagnon and Nelson weave one of the best vampire based stories to come out in some time, and considering how many there are that’s quite an accomplishment. What makes this so good is the layered plot that gives the reader more than your everyday “vampire vs vampire” story. The characters themselves also have a strong presence, which make both factions enjoyable to read when the story shifts between the two. As far as the dialogue goes, Nelson and Gagnon deliver some great content and even let you know that bacon is better than immortality!

If you were able to read Day Men #1 and see what Stelfreeze is bringing to this series, then you already know how good this issue looks! There isn’t one panel that won’t just “wow” you, whether it’s filled with attack dogs defending a distillery or a Virgo family meeting. Between Stelfreeze’s pencils and Darrin Moore’s colors you will be hard pressed to find a book that looks better than this. The faster paced action scenes flow almost perfectly, and nothing is lost as you move through the carnage. These guys are so consistent that you might just find yourself staring at the pages for some time.

The only drawback with Day Men is that it may not be your standard monthly title as mentioned in the “Blood Work” column of the book. However, if it allows the creative team to consistently deliver this amount of quality work then it’s going to be worth it in the end. Since there will be a bit of time between issues, though, maybe a recap section would help anyone who might not be jumping in at the beginning not feel lost. Other than that just know that when you pick up an issue of Day Men you’re getting your time and money’s worth!

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

BOOM! Studios
Writer: Michael Alan Nelson
Artist: Matteo Scalera (cover “A” by Khary Randolph)
Colors: Archie Van Buren
As we left off with issue #6, Valen, Cordovan, Zjanna, and Fiona were confronted by Tyroll, the would-be King that has been manipulated and trained by the evil Korrus Null himself. Tyroll claims to be there on a peaceful mission to escort the group to the city of Wraithendal, where Korrus Null rules. Valen doesn’t believe him at first, but when the group is attacked by an enormous beast, they quickly agree to follow him. Cordovan is noticeably nervous, and claims it’s because he needs a drink. They arrive at the castle of Korrus Null, and are greeted by an army of sixty-thousand men. These men, as told by Tyroll, are to be the army of Valen, after he speaks with Korrus Null. Once inside the chambers, Valen quickly engages the guards and slices them to pieces. Null tells him to calm down, but Valen is furious. Zjanna reaches for her blade, but Tryoll tells her not to join in, because the guards are instructed to not harm Valen, but anyone else is fair game. Valen eventually calms down, but then his temper rises again when he hears the offer Korrus Null gives him!
This book has been quite a breath of fresh air for fantasy readers. It has some Conan vibes and also Solomon Kane, as well. Throw in a dash of Dr. Strange, and you have a great book that has no equal. It really does tell a unique story, with characters that have depth and make you want to like them and know more about them. We’ve certainly been given back story on each, but further adventures revealed from their pasts beckon. The supporting cast really makes the book, but that being said, Valen is well written, too. The young boy, Tyroll, that is a future king, has some intriguing things about him as well, and it should be interesting to see where he ends up when all is said and done.
Scalera and Van Buren do a great job on this book with the pencils and colors. It’s generally a dark book, but not so dark that it’s impossible to tell what’s going on. Valen is rugged looking, as you’d expect, and the sexy Zjanna is quite a good contrast. Cordovan looks the part of a drunken, sneaky thief. The cover by Randolph is great, too, and he (as well as with his work with Aspen) always delivers. Throw in a couple of variant covers (below) that rock, and you have a great series that should please any fantasy fan! Rating 4/5

Billy Dunleavy
billy@comicattack.net

BOOM! Studios
Writer: Michael Alan Nelson
Artist: Matteo Scalera (cover by Khary Randolph)
Colorist: Archie Van Buren
In this issue, we find out some back story on Zjanna. She’s been the most mysterious character to date, and also the coolest! She’s one of the “Skulk” that have been feared for a few issues now. These ferocious packs of women are ruthless, and only use men for breeding. Sounds fun, you say? Well, if the woman bears a girl, you’re fine, but if she has a boy, you get castrated and bleed to death in front of the entire clan. The Skulk are an all female clan who take justice into their own hands. They hate men, and protect their territory like ravenous animals. They have caught up to Valen, Zjanna, and Cordovan, and Valen then tries to buy them some time by facing the Skulk by himself. To make a long story short, Valen gives his best effort, but ends up getting drawn and quartered!
BOOM! really has a good thing going with this title. Valen and the others are all strong characters. The initial plot, or so I thought, was moving slowly, but in all honesty, I thought that Valen getting his soul back would be the first arc and be over by now. However, the more issues that pass by, the more it become apparent that the story is more about the journey rather than Valen getting his soul back. As long as the action stays where it’s at, and the characters continue to develop, that’s fine with me. Nelson really does a fine job with the story, and shows no signs of slowing down with the great pace that this book has.
Matteo Scalera’s work is absolutely perfect for this book. He draws strong and tough looking characters, or in the case of Cordovan, a good drunk, as well! Don’t be fooled, though; Cordovan is a skilled fighter, too, he just doens’t look as much the part compared to Valen and Zjanna. Scalera also does quite well with the backgrounds and animals. The colorist, Archie Van Buren, is more than adequate at his job, as well. The job he does on Zjanna alone is great. Her skin tone, along with her tattoos and red outfit, are fantastic. The contrast really brings her to life on the pages.

This series is definitely a must read, and everyone needs to get on board with this book. The writing, artwork, and everything in between are selling points, so go out and grab a copy today! Rating 4/5
Billy Dunleavy
billy@comicattack.net

BOOM! Studios
Writer: Michael Alan Nelson
Artist: Matteo Scalera (cover by Khary Randolph)
Colorist: Archie Van Buren
As Valen and his friends sail across the sea, something unforeseen begins to make a move against him. They are called Furies, and they are basically dead women that have a certain elemental power or ability. One has fire, one ice, and one wind. They attack the ship mercilessly, and the crew is all but killed. The only survivors look to be Cordovan, Zjanna, and possibly Valen. I say possibly, because one of the Furies is his dead ex-wife. Most people can understand how that conversation is going to go, but let’s not jump to conclusions. She might just want to talk about the weather or alimony payments or something…probably not since she blames him for her death and the death of their son!
Nelson is building up this fight that will eventually occur between Korrus and Valen so much, that if it isn’t more epic than Ali vs. Frazier, I’m going to be severely disappointed. Korrus has hurt Valen every way possible to hurt someone, and that’s an understatement. You know what they say about paybacks, don’t you? Well, Valen is now jacked up more than ever to end this and retrieve his soul from him, that he’s almost over the edge himself. Will Valen drown or be nagged to death by his dead ex-wife? Read to find out, but Nelson is doing a great job on this book, and it should be on everyone’s pull list in the world!

Matteo Scalera and Archie Van Buren are a fantastic team with the artwork. There is never a time when the scenes are too cluttered or indescribable. That’s huge, because even the big two get that wrong sometimes. From pencils to colors, this book is solid. The new characters that have appeared in this issue are really cool, too. These “Furies” wreak a ton of havoc in just minutes, and the fact that they look the way they do makes them scary! Of course, there are a few different choices for covers. Really, you can’t go wrong with any of them. This series has already shown so much, but is only beginning its trip upward! Rating 4/5
Billy Dunleavy
billy@comicattack.net

BOOM! Studios
Writer: Michael Alan Nelson
Artist: Matteo Scalera (cover “A” by Khary Randolph)
Colorist: Archie van Buren
“Valen Brand used to be the beloved King of Oakhaven until the necromancer, Korrus Null, stole his soul and left him an undead thrall. Valen’s old friend, Zjanna, helped free him from the necromancer’s control and now they, along with their drunken guide, Alexio Cordovan, make a long and perilous journey north toward Wraithendal in order to face Korrus null and reclaim Valen’s soul.”
That is the solicit for this series, and it is perfect because it’s a great overview of the first couple of issues. A lot has happened so far in this great series, but this issue really upped the stakes! Last issue, we saw Zjanna snapped out of her trance, and then the trio made their way to a city, looking for safe passage to Korrus Null’s kingdom. Upon entering this city, Cordovan was arrested by an underground police force of sorts. This ruthless lot is unafraid of Valen, and tells him that if he tries to rescue his friend, they’ll out him and everyone in the city will be after him. Valen agrees to back off, and Zjanna thinks they should let him rot. Valen convinces her otherwise, and the two make a daring rescue attempt that ends in a confrontation with Korrus Null’s number one henchman, Ivo.
Nelson has done it again! He’s totally proved to me that he can deliver again, with no slowing down at all. Typically after the first two or three issues of a series, things tend to get a little sluggish. Not here, not by a long shot. And this isn’t just an action book, either, so the argument of it being just that is invalid. There is a great relationship between these three characters, and especially with Valen and Zjanna. Either something has happened between them in the past, or they both have feelings for each other but have not acted on them yet. Cordovan is hiding a secret, and it’s one that we don’t really have any clues to yet, but it’s an angle that I’m very interested in. Not all this withstanding, there was a HUGE teaser on the last page that left me extremely excited for next issue. Bravo, Mr. Nelson.
Scalera is on point with the artwork, which is no surprise after pumping out three previous issues that were also solid. I really took notice to Cordovan more in this issue for some reason. He’s really sneaky looking, and maybe that was a plant to get you thinking he was/is a traitor, and maybe it’s not. Only time will tell on that one, and I hope he isn’t, but again, this issue really had me wondering, and Scalera had a lot to do with that. There also has been no shortage of great covers for this series. First off, Ale’ Garza – the dude is a beast, and every one of his covers (#4, below) have been great! Secondly, Khary Randolph, the cover artist for the “A” cover, is a guy that I first noticed through his work for Aspen (Charismagic), and he’s another solid dude that always brings it. And if that wasn’t enough, you also get a Joe Jusko variant to be the icing on the cake. Definitely give this series a try if you love action/adventure type books, because you won’t be disappointed. Rating 4/5

Billy Dunleavy
billy@comciattack.net

BOOM! Studios
Writer: Michael Alan Nelson
Artist: Matteo Scalera (cover by Liam Sharp)
Valen and Cordovan are asleep, but not for long. It seems that Zjanna has been magically mind-controlled by one of Korrus Null’s lackeys. She immediately tries to kill Cordovan, but he uses his agility to get out of her reach. He screams for Valen, and eventually the big man comes to his aid. The two men manage to fight her off and get away to a nearby forest. The forest allegedly is home to a beast called a “Skulk,” so the two try to make their way to a nearby city by going around the beast’s lair. The problem with that idea is that it leads them closer to Zjanna and her blood-thirsty self! Cordovan tells Valen that once they reach this city, they’ll be OK, because he has a friend there that will provide them with safe passage across a sea, and one step closer to Korrus Null.
Alright, well, I’m still really liking this series, but this issue was kind of slow. It did have some great action scenes, but fell a little flat for me for two reasons. One, the story really is still in the same place it was last issue. If this was an ongoing, I wouldn’t really care, but the fact that this is a mini-series really puts the pressure on for every single issue to deliver. Secondly, the beast that was so dangerous in the woods? Yeah, where was it again? Did I miss it? It never appeared, and if it appears later in the series, that’s fine, but if it doesn’t, that would really bite. Valen and Cordovan made it seem like this creature is the craziest thing you’d ever see and could rip everyone apart. So again, still a good issue, but really lacked any oomph.
Scalera is delivering big time on the artwork, though, and that helped carry this book. Once and a while I think a facial expression might look strange, but all in all, he does a great job. Valen looks menacing, Cordovan sneaky, and Zjanna very sexy and dangerous! The settings are cool, but the characters definitely are what makes the book solid. The pages that I like the most are the ones with fire. Yeah, I know it sounds kind of juvenile (a la Beavis & Butthead), but those scenes are very well done. Oh, quick side note here. If you are a big PETA supporter, don’t read this book. They kill a make believe horse in it. Studios
Writer: Micheal Alan Nelson
Artist: Matteo Scalera (cover by Liam Sharp)
The necromancer Korrus Null is not one for leaving unresolved business that way for long. So then, needless to say he’s already on to what Valen and his partners are up to. He enacts a plan to use an insider to turn the tables on Valen, but who that person is, we don’t know…yet. One thing’s for sure, Valen already being dead is coming in quite useful. As he, Zjanna, and Cordovan are heading out on a journey to seek out Korrus Null to win back Valen’s soul, they come upon an army guarding a bridge. They then get attacked by a ruthless ruler named Flemmyng. He takes them prisoner, telling Valen that he’ll figure out what to do with him later, and that Zjanna will be his new play-thing. Eventually, Flemmyng and Valen strike a bargain that leads to an all out battle on the bridge. Arrows fly, swords swing, and limbs end up severed, as this second issue packs a punch!
I was really blown away by this issue, as I was with the first. Both had good depth, pacing, and artwork. I love the characters, especially the three “heroes.” The villain looks great, too, and I can only imagine what will happen when he and Valen throw down. Nelson does a fine job at telling enough story to keep you wanting more, but not revealing too much. Hopefully things get even crazier next issue, and by seeing the last page, I think they will!
The artist, Matteo Scalera, is fantastic on this book. He really sets the tone for all the action with his rendering of Valen and the others looking very imposing heading onto the battlefield. My favorite has to be the battle pages, but even on the pages with just conversation he does a remarkable job. Especially with Valen and Zjanna. The alternate covers are absolutely great as well (cover below by Ale Garza), and really add to the excitement when you see them just before opening the book. Rating 4/5

Billy Dunleavy
billy@comicattack.net

BOOM! Studios
Writer: Michael Alan Nelson
Artist: Matteo Scalera (cover by Liam Sharp)
Colorist: Archie van Buren
Looking for a new fantasy book packed with action and adventure? Well look no further, people, because BOOM! Studios is bringing it with Valen the Outcast #1! The tale is one that has quite an interesting twist to it, and I for one think it’s great. Valen, the main character, is a former king, and the reason he’s a former king is because he’s dead. That’s right, Valen is basically a zombie-type creature that ceased to live after being killed in battle. This hasn’t slowed down his drive to fight against evil, though, but the first order of business is to find the person who killed him and reverse a curse that was placed on his soul. He seemingly only has one friend in life now, and that’s the beautiful and dangerous Zjanna. She’s quite the warrior herself, and when the evil forces of Korrus Null come looking for Valen, Zjanna has the fight of her life on her hands.

I definitely dig this idea of having a “Conan-esque” type character with the dead twist to it. It really gives it a feeling of originality, and new perspective. The writer, Michael Alan Nelson, sets up a good story here and gives you just enough to want to read the next issue, which is perfect. The artist (Matteo Scalera) does a fine job as well, and I really enjoyed the battle scenes. The ending was rather cryptic, but it was a good tease, as well. I’m hoping for big things with this book because it’s a fantasy book that really mirrors some of my all-time favorites like Conan and Kull. Oh, and did I mention that issue #1 is only $1!!! Rating 3.5/5
Billy Dunleavy
billy@comicattack.net

Touring the Cosmos: Insurrection V3.6 #1-#2

mike

BOOM! They have played themselves right into the hands of greed, the foremost emotion that humans really display anymore. Having migrated to all over the universe, Insurrection V3.6 is based on the planet Sparta, circa 3000 C.E. (Common Era). Here we have GLOMRAT and RETSU, two corporations vying for control of the resources Sparta has to offer. The intriguing part of the way battles are waged is the fact that humans do not battle. They use AUTs, which are basically androids. The androids are fully self sufficient in making decisions and doing battle. All their owners have to do is merely watch and hope they win, which is pretty much the only source of entertainment that humans seem to have. While there are the usual political tones when the rich are involved, Insurrection V3.6 delves deeper into the human psyche.

Insurrection V3.6 addresses many different points that make for a good sci-fi story. You have the story of Hal, whom many would see as the villain. If one were to look deeper, though, you would see that the inner struggles he has toward his AUTs are what really make him special. He controls a large cadre of AUTs, as well as slave androids that aid him in his day to day affairs. Throughout the story he struggles to find the line between AUT and human. He knows that in order to stay in power he has to show he has control over his AUT units, but is slowly starting to realize that their direct portrayal of humanity makes them nearly real. On the inside they are nothing more than refrigerators, but slowly he is beginning to develop a new bond with them. We also get to see the story from a particular AUT unit named Tim. From the moment of his inception he begins asking questions that no other AUT would even consider, and starts to display emotions that betray his purpose. He feels for his comrades in arms, and even humiliates Hal at the RETSU engagement.

Issue #2 cover by Rael Lyra

As it’s only two issues deep, it was a pleasant surprise to see how easy it was to immerse into this new universe. Usually, complex sci-fi stories are difficult to enter because the writer has a hard time explaining what is in his head. With Insurrection V3.6 this is not the case. Blake Masters shows he had a real good story brewing in his noggin, and along with the help of Michael Alan Nelson, it was translated pretty well. The inner battles of Hal are particularly enjoyable. It adds a real human element to the story, all the while having a very sci-fi basis. Tim, the AUT, provides the action scenes and a foil to Hal. Although it is easy to root for Tim, Hal is not necessarily the bad guy. He is just following the trend that humans have created. This is what makes this story pretty unique. It is not simply a good vs. evil story, but something much more complex.

Masters, Nelson, and Penick have come together to be a strong force on this comic. It is easy to tell that Nelson and Masters have efficiently collaborated to tell an interesting sci-fi story. They have created layered characters, a thick plot, and a unique setting for this story. The interactions at the RETSU gathering were well done, really showing how humans view the AUTs and their human/master relationship. Blake Masters really showed that he has a deep understanding for the atmosphere he wanted to create and has a real plan for his characters. Speaking of atmosphere and settings, the art from Michael Penick is easily the strongest point of this comic. Each panel is clear and concise, from the look on people’s faces to the motionless AUTs. The way Penick was able to create a really crisp yet bland room for Hal and the RETSU gathering really shows how rich yet boring humans have become. Penick also really shows an affinity for fluid motions from panel to panel. Karl Richardson and Rael Lyra also provide some pretty nice covers that set a good tone for what is inside.

This is definitely a suggested read for any fan of a good sci-fi story. It may seem at first that this has borrowed elements from stories like Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? or even a scene from Starship Troopers, but in the end it has come together to be its own unique tale. Despite a slow start, the direction that issue 1 and 2 are heading is great. Here is to hoping that Masters, Nelson, and Penick will stay on course to finish what should be a great sci-fi story.

Mike Parente
mike@comicattack.net
