Another month and another Lumberjanes graces our presence. What new mysteries will we come across? Will we get some answers that lead to bigger questions? Let’s find out!

Really enjoying the progression in character development since now that Jen knows that the weird stuff going on is real, she responds accordingly by trying to protect the campers to the best of her ability. This means attempting to keep the kids away from the monsters, things don’t go as planned as should be expected.

We’re learning more and more about this weird world of Lumberjanes while still being left with a ton of questions and new material raises more questions. It gives you enough to appease but still has you craving more and wondering what’s going on. Since this series is an ongoing, who knows what kind of bizarre stuff we’ll find in and around this camp.

Without giving too much away, we get some really great visuals when the strange shows up. There are so many wonderful panels in this issue. If I can get them framed, I would. We get some great stuff that can scare, thrill, and it’s all so cool looking.

Trying to explain how good this issue is proves difficult without spoiling some so the short version of this is to go buy this book if you haven’t already. It’s got so many fun things going on in it and it’s got a wonderfully diverse cast. There’s a a magic bear in this. That do anything for you? Go read this book!

It’s no secret that Lumberjanes is a critical and commercial success. The series reads like a great cartoon that we are sorely missing on the screen. Thankfully we have been getting this phenomenal comic that more than makes up for it. So does this new issue continue the tradition the last few have? Let’s find out!

This issue we meet some of the strangest creatures yet. Yetis and a boys’ camp. The boys are bringing more mystery to the situation than the human-hating yetis. I don’t just mean that in some coming of age way, I mean for real, what is up with that camp and everyone in it? I won’t spoil it but it has me concerned.

I’m enjoying the character development as well. A big revelation happened that I am glad for, because it’s one of my favorite kind to see in any series where strange things happen. I also would not mind seeing a spin-off series all about yetis just trying to live cool lives without gross humans getting in the way.

I mentioned a cartoon series earlier, if it were to be made, it would have to keep this great art. I love it because the designs get across so much without being too complex. The diversity of design means I never have a hard time telling who is who. I love that so much; even the yetis are dynamic and diverse.

If you couldn’t guess from the opening paragraph or the ones that have followed since, I adored this issue and highly recommend it. From little kids to old people, I want everyone to get to experience the joy of Lumberjanes. If you are going to be at San Diego Comic Con 2014, they will be selling Lumberjanes merit badges at the BOOM! Studios booth. I hope I don’t live to regret telling you that; I want to get them for myself as well.

Writers: Noelle Stevenson & Grace Ellis
Letterer: Aubrey Aiese

Lumberjanes was sold to me with the premise being part X-Files, part Gravity Falls, part Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with a girl scout group of friends, so needless to say, I was intrigued. That pitch along with that name sold me on it. So when I finally got to take a look inside, what did I think? Let’s find out!

So I loved this book and am looking forward to more. Another thing I forgot to mention in selling it to me was the art. I loved it and it’s cute as can be, while also having some really weird creature designs that still remain cute. Take the words away and you’d still get a great story; that’s strong art. That is art you can live by.

I’m glad the words are there, though. This is a weird world of three-eyed foxes, bear women, and a lumberjack-themed scout camp. I think we’d all be in a better world where our kids are taught to fight off strange creatures. We can all agree with that, right? This series has a lived-in world that makes it easy to pick up on these kids and their personalities. By page three a battle breaks out, and we aren’t even really sure as to how we got to this point, so we have to go forward to see this fight resolved and find out what is going on.

This feels like a great show made into a comic, but there is no show of which to speak. If you are a fan of shows like Gravity Falls and Adventure Time with their strange encounters, then you should be picking up Lumberjanes. This is a number one issue with no tie-ins to movies, TV shows, or pre-existing characters, and it has me so excited and feeling like it’s an old favorite by the time I finished the issue. Go get it. Chop chop. Sorry, I had to get in at least one lumberjack pun.
