This issue expands on how the dark and gritty 1930’s Spidey came into his service while also being a great introduction to the character himself. Having the original writers of the Spider-Man Noir title deliver this story is perfect and a great way to start things off.

Hine and Sapolsky haven’t missed a step as we see the Magnificent Mysterio coveting the Blood of Anasi which runs through Peter’s veins. Believing it will give him the power he deserves as he’s tired of wasting his talents. So with the Kingpin’s help he’s going to do just that as the two kidnap Felicia Hardy and plan a public execution under the guise of one of Mysterio’s stage shows. That is, unless The Spider-Man shows himself and makes a blood sacrifice.

If you were a fan of the Spider-Man Noir series then everything about this issue will make you miss that. The writers deliver a solid story that gives you familiar faces all in an environment that fits them. Kingpin is essentially the same gangster type of character though Isanove slightly adjusts the character’s look. Mysterio as a stage magician fits perfect as does his motive to trap Spider-Man. The entire look of the issue is nailed by Isanove as your eyes move from panel to panel. The visual change to Kingpin actually helped shift the focus to Mysterio when they were in panel together and let this really be his show. Mysterio’s look share’s certain elements of his 616 appearance and there’s even a larger nod to it if you pay close attention.

Spider-Verse is going to incorporate several versions of the Webslinger and issues like this are helpful in getting acclimated with them. New readers can feel comfortable knowing they just won’t be thrown into an event with little information while those that are more familiar can just enjoy a great story and artwork.

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

Deep Discussions with Decapitated Dan #76: David Hine

DecapitatedDan

ComicAttack.net Radio

Decapitated Dan

Deep Discussions with Decap.....

Horror

Humor

Image

Interviews

News

Podcast

Radical Publishing

Top Cow

Bulletproof Coffin

Darkness

David Hine

Ryder on the Storm

Horror comics have been scaring readers for years. Father Garrett tells Azrael that each of the inner circle are privy to an ancient secret. The Crusader is after that information. Not giving up that secret, they are being brutally murdered in reenactments of the martyrdom of various Christian saints. Father Garrett is worried, as he is one of the five members of the inner circle of the Order of Purity.

The first victim met his demise in the fashion of Saint Christopher. The man was beaten until every major bone in his body was broken. He then had a helmet placed on his head and the helmet was set aflame. Still unwilling to give up his knowledge, the man was beheaded. The body was found a day later, hanging from a hook on the ceiling in the bookstore he owned. His head, still in the helmet, was found sitting on a table next to the body.

Next was a woman murdered in the fashion of Saint Christina. This was the most violent of all the saints’ deaths. She was bitten by vipers then had her skin ripped to shreds with nails. She was then burned and pierced with arrows. After that, her breasts were cut off. To end it all, the Crusader tore out her tongue and left her to bleed out.

After hearing of these horrible deaths, Father Garrett finally has the Angel of Vengeance convinced to go hunt this maniac down and make him pay. Father Garrett has an idea of who may be next to bite it, and the pair head off to London. They are too late, though. They find the priest as he has been stripped to his Fruit of the Looms and left arrowed to a pillar with many more arrows plunged into his body.

The Crusader tells the men he has been sent by God and has been given powers. Azrael has had enough, calls the Crusader a blasphemer, and charges towards him with his flaming Sword of Sin drawn. Father Garrett calls after Azrael and tells him that the Crusader speaks the truth; that he actually does have supernatural powers. It is too late, however, because the Crusader took a swig of Holy Water and spewed it upon Azrael, proclaiming it refreshes those who are virtuous but burns the wicked. We’re left with Azrael covered in flames.

I’ll be honest. This isn’t my Azrael. My Azrael was Jean-Paul Valley. The Azrael who took over as Batman after Bane broke his back. The Azrael that followed the Order of St. Dumas and eventually went nuts due to his burden of being the Order’s avenging angel. My Azrael died in issue #100 of his own book, back in 2003. I don’t think that killing him off was really the way to go; he was and still is one of my favorite DC characters. That Azrael’s book, however, was really starting to get crazy-weird and lame, so they ended it all. In my opinion, writer and co-creator (with Joe Quesada) Denny O’Neil was too stubborn to admit that the book needed fresh ideas and wouldn’t turn his baby over to anybody else, so he just took his ball and went home, so to speak. I was more than thrilled when my Azrael came back as a Black Lantern in Blackest Night #4, but he was quickly disposed of and I was totally bummed when he wasn’t one of the characters that returned to the land of the living in Brightest Day.

No, this Azrael is an ex-cop by the name of Michael Lane. We were first introduced to Lane in Batman #672. He was one of the group of Gotham City police officers that went through a program designed by Dr. Hurt to be a replacement Batman if anything were to ever happen to the real deal. Michael Lane is the third “ghost of Batman.” He was recruited into the Order of Purity, a sister sect of the Order of St. Dumas, to be their avenging angel. He wears the Suit of Sorrows, a relic of the Order of Purity that had been stolen back from Ra’s al Ghul. He also wields the Sword of Sin and the Sword of Salvation. Talia al Ghul was in possession of the Sword of Salvation when Lane fought her. She wanted the Suit of Sorrows to give to her son, Damian Wayne, but Lane defeated Talia back in Battle for the Cowl. Whoever wears the Suit of Sorrows is eventually driven insane by the burden of wearing the suit. Having already suffered mental effects from Dr. Hurt’s experiments, the Order of Purity knows that it’s just a matter of time before Michael Lane goes completely mad.

The first nine issues of this new volume of Azrael were written by Fabian Nicieza. It started out pretty awesome, but then soon turned almost pointless. With this issue, Azrael #10, it begins a new run with David Hine as the writer. Things are starting to look up again. The artist, Guillem March, does nothing that I would call my favorite, but he has his moments. Don’t get me wrong, though. I borrow books. I steal books. I need a second home to store them all. Also watch lots of movies with my partner and son – going to the movies is our favourite thing.

Your iPod gets stuck on one band for 2 days. Who do you hope it is?

Well, I hope to God it’s not The Jesus and Mary Chain. I love them, but you know, two days of screaming feedback could drive me over the edge.

You’re on a cruise when all of a sudden out of the water emerges the lost city of Atlantis. What do you hope to learn from these lost people?

There is a question that has been tormenting me since I wrote the Inhumans for Marvel, a question that has baffled the world’s greatest intellects, and the Atlanteans may just be the ones with the wisdom to finally give us the definitive answer: “Is Lockjaw a dog?”

When you were 10 and 30 what were you for Halloween?

Ah, more quaint American traditions. There were no Satanic Halloween celebrations here in England when I was a kid, but the degenerate influence of our former colonies has finally crept into our society, and I have to admit I have succumbed to the temptation to put on tacky make-up and a cheap costume to parade myself as one of the undead.

Favorite comic character when you were 7, 17 and 27?

7: Dennis the Menace (the English version from the Beano comic – a real menace, not like your quaint American version).
17: Mr Natural
27: Alack Sinner

If while on a trip through the Andes Mountains you happen to find the Abominable Snowman, would you:
A. Take a picture with your camera to share with all your friends.
B. Go catch that big white bastard because you need a new trophy for your great room.
C. Crap your pants because you didn’t think he was real, which for some odd reason proves that the child in you is dead and you need to get your imagination back.

Can I crap my pants, shoot the bastard, then take a picture of the corpse to share with my Facebook friends?

Back to comic stuff for now.

Knowing that Iceman is the greatest hero of all time, why do you think he is so underused?

Hey, I used him! But I have to admit I couldn’t shake the urge to give him the “I’m so cool I pee ice-cubes” line.

Alright you’re making a comic about the workers of a box factory who are secretly planning on taking over the Arctic Ocean. What’s the name of the book, and sell me on a quick pitch? Go!

It’s called ‘The Ice Box’. With global warming, some parts of the world will suffer from extreme drought, while simultaneously the ice caps will be melting. Our heroes travel to the Arctic where they set out to “Box That Ice!” before the big meltdown, and ship it to a secret location, to await the day when it will be worth more than gold. But Iceman has other ideas!

We all know your writing is amazing, but what do you really want to be when you grow up?

I want to be a Smartass Journalist Assassin.

Where is the real money at in comic creating?

Being Mark Millar. (Bastard!)

When you’re making comics what’s going on around you? Music, what kind? Silence? TV on?

Only movie theme music and classical stuff. No lyrics. I also like to write in cafes. The general background buzz of human activity is better than silence.

What do you know about the process of painting ones toenails?

I’ve seen Kubrick’s Lolita so I know you have to put bits of cotton wool between the toes before you start.

Alright we can finish up with a quick word association game. I will say a word, you give me a quick one sentence response.

FVZA?
Radical’s finest comic book.

Radical Publishing?
America’s finest, independent publisher (you see what I’m saying here?)

Horror Comics?
Eddie Izzard!

Marlon Brando?
The Horror!
