Mangual

Sideways #1 represents the latest of DC’s “New Age of Heroes” line, featuring a young teenage kid named Derek who has suddenly developed powers in the wake of Challenger Mountain randomly appearing out of nowhere in the middle of Gotham in Dark Nights Metal #1. Origin issues are often a mixed bag, and while this entry is more successful than the first New Age of Heroes comic, Damage, it is far less successful than the second entry, Silencer.

On the positive side, Sideways is, for the first time in this new line, specifically tied into the events from the Dark Nights Metal event, which all comics in this line are touted to be. There is a flashback sequence detailing how Derek got his powers while visiting Gotham with his mom. The concept of Sideways and his power suite are interesting – he has the ability to open “rifts” or “doors” to transport himself wherever he wants, but as a new hero, he’s still getting a grasp on how the powers work, so he often ends up slighting missing his intended target location. The decision to also give him super strength is an odd, and unnecessary, choice, as the character would have been more interesting as a spy-type who tried not to get caught, or even seen, given that he would have had limited skills to protect himself.

The supporting cast so far has potential, particularly Derek’s friend Ernestine (aka “Ernie”), who is revealed to has created Sideways’ costume for him, and is aware of his powers. Her twin sister, Emie, is less developed, as are the remainder of the kids are Derek’s school, Derek’s parents, and even Derek himself. While there is limited space in an origin issue to introduce so many new characters, it would have been a better decision to focus on just Derek, his mom, and Ernie, and leave the other characters out of it until future issues.

The real star of Sideways is the art by Kenneth Rocafort, and that does seem to be a theme with the New Age of Heroes line so far. Rocafort’s character design for Sideways, while essentially almost copying Spider-Man’s black parasite suit, is sleek and eye-catching, but where the art really shines is in the details of the characters and the backgrounds. Ernie is shown at the mirror in her bathroom getting ready in the morning, and she is shown as a typical girl who just woke up, looking tired and probably not thrilled at the idea of going to school. It’s a great choice to show her this way and not as typical “eye candy” that a lot of female side characters unfortunately are so often relegated to. Further in the issue, Rocafort provides so much detail to Ernie’s room, showing typical teenage clutter, and various collections of action figures, statues, crafting ribbons, computer and gaming hardware, and much else, it really gives the reader a sense of the type of character she is. In fact, these types of details add so much more to her character that she’s significantly more developed and believable than Derek is, even though he’s the main character of the book. In addition, Rocafort’s use of perspective, wide shots, close-ups, and unique panel designs all make for a very visually appealing book.

Unfortunately, Sideways does have its problems. Aside from the lack of characterization noted above, there is also the very strong sense that this is a book being aimed at teenagers, but was written by older writers who don’t quite have a grasp on the language. This has always been a problem, going all the way back to Spider-Man’s debut in 1962. However, the situation is compounded here by the over-use of modern technology, such as a constant text conversation between Derek and Ernie that runs throughout the book, and at the end, a prolonged scene wherein Sideways chooses to record himself performing stunts and to live stream the entire thing on YouTube, even when he is being chased by the inevitable arrival of the non-descript bad guy who shows up at the tail end of the book to try to provide some necessary conflict to the story. These scenes are too over-the-top, almost screaming, “Look! We understand what the kids are doing!” which is never a good sign. Texting, live-streaming, and the like are important parts of teenagers’ lives, but it’s important to get the “voice” right and not include them in scenes merely for the sake of trying to prove knowledge of their existence.

While this first issue of Sideways is uneven, having a new teenage hero, with ideally a teen/tween appropriate plot and continued great art by Rocafort, in an ongoing book could be a great addition to DC’s stable of monthly publications. With some more work on the dialogue and character development, combined with art of this caliber, this could end up being a good title.

Martin Thomas
martin@comicattack.net

DC All Access Live ‘Rebirth’ Live Stream From WonderCon!

InfiniteSpeech

Batman

Comic Cons

DC Comics

Flash

Green Lantern

Infinite Speech

Justice League

News

Previews

banner

Dan DiDio

Geoff Johns

Jim Lee

Rebirth

Superman

Swamp Thing

WonderCon

Today, DC Comics will announce more details regarding REBIRTH at WonderCon 2016! Jim Lee along with Dan Didio were on hand with stamp sheet designer, Greg Breeding, and USPS CIO Jim Cochrane as a select few were given their first look the 2014 Limited Edition Forever Batman Stamp. As they came across the stage to a nice round of applause the Caped Crusader accompanied them while stopping for a few pictures and waved at the crowd. The applause grew even louder as Jim, Dan, Greg, and Jim began to take the blue sheets down giving the fans their official look at the giant sized replicas of what some fans in the audience called the “Batstamps”.

Now, this isn’t the first time Batman has been on a stamp as he was part of the DC Comics Super Heroes sheet back in 2006. However, this time he gets the spotlight all to himself. With artwork by Bob Kane for the Golden Age stamp, Dick Sprang’s art was chosen for the Silver Age, Neal Adams has his version of the Dark Knight on the Bronze Age stamp, while Jim Lee’s Batman adorns the Modern Age stamp.

You might wonder how in the world could Batman’s 75 year presence be narrowed down to just four stamps. Didio and Lee did assure those present that it wasn’t an easy decision since many great artists have had a hand in the Dark Knight’s visual look over the decades. Didio also spoke a bit about the history of Batman and made it official that young Bruce Wayne was a stamp collector to help keep that connection with his father after his death. This brought a few laughs amid the applause and cheers from fans. Lee went on to say that “Batman has inspired and influenced fans around the world for generations and will continue to do so for the next 75 years and beyond.” Didio also joked about the fact there are 80 million of the limited edition stamps and that his definition of the phrase is quite different from the USPS. The four gentlemen talked a bit more about the history and evolution of Batman over his impressive 75 years while pointing out what they thought were their own favorite moments. They soon wrapped up the discussion and headed down for autographs and interviews.

We were able to get a few minutes of Jim Lee’s time to pick his brain about the legacy of Batman after a round of introductions and a few laughs.

Jim Lee

Comic Attack: Since Batman has been drawn by so many talented artists is there a version of him that didn’t make it on the Forever Stamp that you would have liked to have seen?

Jim Lee: I would have loved to have seen The Dark Knight Returns, Frank Miller stamp. That would definitely go up on my wall! Stan (Kaye) would have been awesome. Also Daivid Mazzucchelli from Batman: Year One, Brian Bolland with a Killing Joke stamp would have been amazing! Marshall Rogers…wow…there’s so many that I could go on and on! Oh! Greg Capullo’s art would have been a great modern piece for the collection!

CA: The scope of that is pretty huge by itself so how hard was it just to actually narrow it down to the four stamps in this collection?

JL: [laughs] Wow…well, that was the challenge. We could have done two dozen of these and STILL would have left off some of the great Batman artists. In over 75 years you’re going to have a lot of great talents touching the world of Batman and adding to that mythology and it would have been great to honor them all. But thankfully and hopefully there will be more sets of Batman and we’d love to include more artists and actually more members of the Batman family.

CA: Who are some other characters that you feel are deserving of an honor like this?

JL: Obviously Wonder Woman! I think her anniversary is coming up fairly soon and she’s arguably the most popular super heroine in the world. An icon in herself and I think it would be a great honor to have a Wonder Woman stamp. So luckily we now made this connection and hopefully can make that happen!

CA: Now, what have been some of your favorite Batman storylines over the years

JL: I would say the heyday for me was the 80s. That was when Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns came out, Batman Year One, Killing Joke…that was when I was really into my comic collecting days. Those stories were so impactful, not just in terms of the entertainment value but they really inspired me to become a comic book professional. I remember Dark Knight came out in 86, I graduated college that year and I just decided I would be a comic book artist and there was no turning back from that point!

CA: In looking at the different incarnations of Batman all around us today, do you have a preference in terms of the Batman symbol? Yellow background or no back ground?

JL: [laughs] I personally like the yellow background but people get very um…fanatical about that and go “no we can’t do that. It’s gotta be just grey or just black.” So I’ve been shot down a couple of times! [laughs] You’d think I’d be able to wield a little more influence than that but people are really particular about their Batman. It’s just like how much milk to add to cereal. It has to be very, very personal.

CA: With all of the celebration for Batman’s 75th anniversary are there any plans for a new Batman animated series to debut soon?

JL: There are plans for Batman in all media at all times, guys. I can’t divulge or share any more than that! [laughs]

So after thanking Jim for his time and a few more exchanges the event came to an end and the Batman Forever Stamp was made available to buy at the DC booth! If you’re a fan of Batman, stamp collecting, or both then I’d suggest snatching up a sheet or the framed display before the 80 million stamps are all gone!

Bronze Batman

USPS CIO Jim Cochrane speaking on Batman’s history.

L to R: Greg Breeding, Jim Cochrane, Jim Lee, & Dan Didio.

Jim Lee has the best entourage!

[divider]

All photos courtesy of E.Snell Design

Eric Snell
esnell@comicattack.net

LaToya Snell
lshauntay@esnelldesign.com

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

DC Universe News: DC Entertainment Executive Team Named

Jordan

Columns

DC Comics

Jordan

News

Dan DiDio

DC Entertainment

Geoff Johns

Jim Lee

John Rood

Patrick Caldon

In September of last year, Warner Bros. created a new company known as DC Entertainment. He began his career at DC as creator and writer of Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. Aside from his work in comics, Johns has written television episodes of Smallville, Robot Chicken, and Titan Maximum. He is also the writer of the story for the DC Universe Online massively multiplayer action game and is currently writing some of the hottest comics on the shelves right now in Blackest Night and Green Lantern.

John Rood is a returning face at Warner Bros. He originally worked at Warner Bros. for six years in Consumer Products. He then left to pursue a career at the Disney ABC Television Group as Senior Vice President of Marketing for ABC Family. After ten years, he is now returning to Warner Bros. as the EVP of Sales, Marketing, and Business Development.

Patrick Caldon’s most recent position was Executive Vice President of Finance and Operations of DC Comics and MAD Magazine. Before DC, Caldon worked in corporate accounting and as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Cosmos soccer team at Warner Communications for 12 years. He joined DC in 1985 as Controller, and worked his way up from Vice President of Finance and Operations to Senior Vice President of Finance and Operations, and finally to his position as Executive Vice President of Finance and Operations.

This looks to me like an extremely qualified group of individuals that make up this executive management team. I don’t think there could be a better team to lead DC Entertainment where it needs to go. Putting DiDio and Lee in the position of Publisher for DC comics was a smart move. Both of these guys have been higher management at DC for years and probably have the best experience of anyone. And, they named one of the best writers, if not the best, they have as CCO. In my eyes, the future of this company is looking bright.

Jordan West
jordan@comicattack.net

DC Reviews: Weird Western Tales #71

Drew

DC Comics

Drew

Horror

Reviews

Sci-Fi

bat-lash

Blackest Night

Dan DiDio

Drew McCabe

Jonah Hex

renato arlem

Weird Western tales

Weird Western Tales# 71 Publisher: DC Comics Writer: Dan Didio Artist: Renato Arlem My favorite part of DC’s Blackest Night has been the one-shot issues continuing canceled titles like Shazam or The Phantom Stranger, and bringing their stars back from the dead. To be honest. I’ve been holding off on buying the issues and just reading them in store or on-line while waiting for collected versions to come out so I can have the whole story and read it straight through; however some of these titles I can’t help but straight out buy, like Weird Western Tales #71.
Weird Western Tales has been canceled for a ton of years now but Jonah Hex and Bat-Lash are huge favorites of mine, so how couldn’t I give into watching them rise from the dead in pursuit of a black ring?
The story is simple: at a secret research center in the west, built by Simon Stagg (villain of Metamorpho fame), a black ring is brought in for research and all the dead of the wild west who’ve been buried attack (this includes Jonah Hex, Bat-Lash, Scalphunter, Super-Chief and a few others).
The writing by Dan Didio is great and he does a nice job of showcasing our favorite DC Western heroes/villains in a zombie sprawl of supporting parts and cameos. Artwork by Renato Arlem is also top of the line and never looks bad, each panel rocks. So whether you are into the whole Blackest Night saga or a fan of the old DC Western comics, you can’t go wrong with this one.
On a related side note, I just want to congratulate DC on Blackest Night. There were a handful of readers out there feeling like this was DC’s answer to Marvel Comic’s Marvel Zombie storm that has been tearing it up for a handful of years now. DC though has proven it is so much more and has given us a lot of fun with this saga. In March DC will start up First Wave, which many already feel is their answer to Marvel’s The Marvel Project. If there is one thing DC has done with Blackest Night, it is they’ve given us more than an “answer to” but a pleasant surprise, which I hope continues in First Wave (after all Batman, the Spirit and my all time favorite pulp-hero Doc Savage in the same book! Can’t go wrong there).
Drew McCabe
drew@comicattack.net

DC Universe News: Outsiders Update!

Jordan

DC Comics

Jordan

News

Previews

Dan DiDio

Outsider #26

Philip Tan

Last Saturday DC announced that there will be a new team working on Outsiders. The team consists of Dan DiDio as writer and Philip Tan as artist. The new run will begin with Outsiders #26, hitting shelves in January. We posted the cover of Outsiders #26 in black and white, and earlier today an image of the Outsiders #26 cover was released in color. Now, for your viewing pleasure, is the cover of Outsiders #26 in color!

Nice and shiny, just how I like my covers! All kidding aside, this a great looking cover. It appears that these two are having their picture taken, which is all well and good, but the areas of bright light really take away from the artwork behind them.

Jordan West
jordan@comicattack.net

DC Universe News: New Creative Team On Outsiders

Jordan

DC Comics

Jordan

News

Dan DiDio

Outsiders

Philip Tan

Earlier today Austin posted on DC’s blog, The Source, news of a new creative team working on Outsiders. This news was released at the Long Beach ComiCon. The new team will feature the talent of Dan DiDio, DC’s Executive Editor, as writer and Philip Tan as the artist. Their run will begin with Outsiders #26.

Here is what DiDio had to say:

“This is an exciting time for me both personally and professionally. I have been a fan of The Outsiders since their inception and with Pete Tomasi moving on to some very exciting projects in 2010, I have been afforded the opportunity to work with some of my favorite characters. Most importantly, this also gives me the chance to work with the immensely talented Philip Tan, and together I hope we can meet and exceed all expectations for this series.”

And here is what Tan had to say:

“I have orders from Dan to hunt down and skewer anyone who buys comics and doesn’t pick this up in January.

Seriously though, I can’t be more excited! Batman and the Outsiders is actually the first DC book I ever bought (and got stolen)! It will be a challenge to pick it up after Peter and Fernando’s run and continue to entertain, but Dan and I are extremely confident that we will be able to create some very exciting visual stories! There are tons of ideas that we want to play with! It is not only a huge honor for me to work on Dan’s first monthly book, but I’m also insanely giddy about being able to be creatively involved on a whole new level with this project, a level that I have never experienced!”

Below you will find the cover to Outsiders #26. It will be posted in color later this month.

I don’t read Outsiders, but I will definitely have to pick this up once the DiDio/Tan run begins just to see how DiDio does as a writer. Tan is an excellent artist, so his art on this title is an added bonus!

Jordan West
jordan@comicattack.net

DC Universe News: Wonder Woman Tally

Jordan

DC Comics

Jordan

News

Dan DiDio

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman #600

Today on DC’s blog, The Source, Alex Segura posted information regarding the debate to return Wonder Woman to its original numbering in order to commemorate the 600th issue.
