Its one thing to argue over a post online about a characters gender expression, orientation, or even race. The issues becomes a whole lot more personal when there are people face to face in cosplay and they are getting harassed for presenting a character how they envision them to be. This panel at New York Comic Con went into the aspects of the intersectionality of being Black and on the queer spectrum.

Kirya

Moderating the panel was Kirya Traber, @kiryatraber; and the panel included Cleopatra, @cleopatrafromthebronx; Harly Lovegood, @whoisharley; Isake, @is_she_okay; Jay Justice, @thatjayjustice; Tony R. Ray, of Everybody Loves Tony Ray. Opening the panel it was made known that this is a safe space and for all those in the space should show dignity to one another. PGP’s, Preferred Gender Pronouns, were also given at this time so I will be addressing the panelist by their PGP’s throughout the article.

Isake as Ms. Frizzle

The first question posed to the panel by Kirya was “How do you see your experience cosplaying while being Black and Queer relating to the larger context of racism cis-sexism, patriarchy, ecetera.” The panelist spoke of a general idea of just existing in a space is resistance to the barrage of -isms set forth with-in the cosplay community. “For me cosplaying Wonder Woman, me cosplaying Supergirl, me cosplaying these iconic characters allows me to take up space in a way that is integral to continuing resistance…thats the way I can make the space for the people who come behind me.” spoke Isake. Continuing she says, “I feel the need to be visible in a way to make myself feel stronger in those spaces.” The ability to just be there is a profound complex experience.

Tony as Aquaman

For Tony Ray its about kids like his son for him its, “that moment of showing like YES your little brown babies can run around and be superheros too…and that is so powerful because as you dressed as Superman they aren’t gonna go ‘oh my god its Black Superman’ they’re gonna go ‘oh my god its Superman and if a child can see themselves represented as a hero there’s no limit to what they can do!”.

Harley recounts a moment just the day earlier where they were cosplaying as Aquaman and were verbally accosted for being wanting to present as a male Aquaman and not a rule 63 version.

“In the street I got so many like violent reactions from like Cis-men (as

Harley’s Punk Black Panther

in Cis-gender which is the correlation of ones self identity to that of their biological sex) about me NOT being Aquaman, I was a Mermaid, I was Aqualady, I was Mera, I couldn’t just be Aquaman.” Harley uses taking up space in cosplay as a way to help deal with life as it can be a powerful thing.

Jay Justice as Superboy

Moving on, Kirya directed the panel to analyze the importance and uniqueness of and having spaces where the venn diagram of Queer, Black, and Cosplay meet. Jay Justice speaks of the booth co-directed by herself and Tony, LGBT HQ, and it being a nexus of information including queer writer, artist, and a place you can come and seek out cosplay repair. Isake spoke about communal spaces and having the ability to not have to explain away your life for when shit just gets offensive, “you need to be in spaces where other people share your experience…you need to be in a place where other folk are like this shit is fucked up and they don’t have to explain why”, “you don’t have to explain the power of that thing to the folks that are in that space with you, they already know”, “having that little bit of power in [these spaces] allows me to transfer that to other spaces. Cause the world is a shitty place sometimes and you need to take power where you can push through.”

Cleopatra as Sindel of Mortal Kombat

The idea of communal cerebral space as a form of mental health as Cleopatra points out throughout the panel, this is especially true when dealing with microaggressions, which are but are not limited to racial slights and behavior that are just used in everyday language as commonplace. The panel went in and talked about the unconscious little slights they go through being Black, Queer cosplayers. Jay Justice, “when I was colossus ‘I didn’t know they had Black people in Russia’ well like they do”. Tony, “there was a time I was dressed as the Pink Ranger and they’re like ‘oh you did this cause your gay right?’ and I’m like oh let me show you my full range of motion”, he says this as he looks like he’s about to bust somebody’s chops. Harley, “as I was leaving the car and I was walking down the street, this guy asked me who I was and I told him I was Aquaman and not only did he stop in the middle of the block to scream at me that I could not be Aquaman because I was not strong and because I have breast”, Cleopatra chimes in, “did he know men have breast?” The room explodes with laughter. Cleopatra then went on to vent her own microagression, “I don’t know if anyone has ever gotten this like only dykes read comics…you know if you are a woman and read comics your a dyke…well clearly, yeah I identify as a dyke SURELY so yes you are completely right”. Tony finishes off the question with, “the ever so classic ‘hey were doing a group [cosplay]’, do you want me to be the Black guy ‘yeah’, have I ever heard of the group, ‘I don’t think so’, then get the Hell out my face” another burst of laughter.

Lastly the panelist were given a chance to share a fan space or creator as resources to the audience. Jay Justice mentions, Regine L. Sawyer of Women In Comics NYC. Tony Ray mentioned something I haven’t heard about yet, Blerd Con, which is a new con that is due to happen next summer in Washington, D.C. I’ll be keeping an eye out for it.

So to wrap it Kirya summed up all the info of the panel,”finding community online and off, making intentional plans, being honest with yourself about the fact that your experiencing racism, sexism, cis-sexism, heterosexism and having somebody to talk about that honestly and openly.” This panel was a schooling of gender politics. Hopefully this panel gets picked up by more cons so many more queer Black and Brown folk and allies can find their own space.

Audience saluting during a reading of Assata Shakur’s work.

Photos courtesy of LaToya Snell

Kaos Blac
@KaosBlac

Cosplayer Spotlight: Brian Gregory

Andy

Andy

Columns

Cosplay

Cosplayer Spotlight

Sexy

WTF!?

Brian Gregory

Cosplayer

This week’s Cosplayer Spotlight features Brian Gregory, born in Camden, New Jersey, now residing in Philadelphia at 42 years young! I had always said a Con is the only place one couldn’t be judged for letting out their inner geek, and all walks and races are accepted. In previous years I had always wanted to cosplay, but didn’t have a clue on who or how. March 25, 2010 that changed. Thanks to Eric” The Smoke” Moran, whom I’ve meet few years ago at the Wizard Cons, he contacted me on facebook and proposed I would make a good partner to dress up as Salim from Army Of Two for Wizard World 2010. At first I was gun shy, but when I saw the mask I knew he was serious. And so it begun. I made my 1st debut as Salim at Free Comic Book Day Held at Atomic Comics in Philadelphia, PA on May 01, 2010. I also appeared there as one of my favorite super-heroes, Batman.

CA: Have you always been into comics, or has cosplay inspired you to get involved in the hobby?

BG: Actually I’ve been into comics since I was 5 years old. My 1st two comic books were Batman and The Mighty Avengers, which were purchased at 7/11 in the early 70s. Cosplay had always alluded me because I didn’t have enough belief in myself at the time that I could be convincing in whatever character I choose, due to stereotypes.

CA: How, in your mind, were stereotypes holding you back in pursuing something you love to do?

BG: Well to be frank about it: Perception. You don’t see a black Batman, Superman ,Wonder Man, Dr. Strange or Kato, so it was my belief you can’t pull those characters off. Fortunately, I’m glad I now know better. It’s not the color of your skin, but the detail in your costume and the love you have for the character you’re portraying that will get you over with the fans.

CA: Recently we interviewed Milestone co-creator, Denys Cowan, and he had some very enlightening things to say on the subject of race and comics. Since we’re on the subject, what are your thoughts on how black heroes are portrayed in comic books, and do you believe the companies are doing their job in providing diversity in their catalogue?

BG: I believe black heroes in comics have come a long way, but we still have far to go. We need a lot more of them, ethnic heroes from all races, all creeds. I like the concept of Batman Incorporated- that is a start in the right direction. The hope would be to have a black character as beloved and recognizable as Superman or Batman that all races are familiar with, and like the ones I mentioned I identify with.

CA: Which black character do you believe is the most popular in comics? Why do you think this is?

BG: The most popular character by far is Black Panther. He has been a main stay in comics since the 70s. I believe this because he is a proud, intelligent King with his own land, and is extremely self sufficient. He can hold his own against the likes of noteworthy heroes such as Captain America, Iron Man, and other very well respected characters in the Marvel Universe.

CA: Would you consider Black Panther to be one of your favorite characters? Who else are you really into?

BG: Yes he is my number 5: Dr. Strange is #4, Superman #3, Batman #2, and Ultra Man (Japan) is my #1. Of course there are many under that list.

CA: It’s cool when obscure characters are people’s favorites. What can you tell us about Ultra Man that makes him so awesome to you?

BG: Ultra Man is my favorite because he only destroyed the monster or villain if there wasn’t an alternative choice. Ultra Man represents the preservation of all living things, great or small. The true cosmic design of how all living things depend on one another for survival. The needs of the many outweigh the need of the one, which is a reoccurring theme in many superhero and sci-fi films.

CA: Which comic cons do you plan on attending this year? Do you know whom you’ll be dressed as?

BG: This year I plan to attend Wizard World Philly, Baltimore Comic Con, Monster Mania, NYCC,and Dragon Con. I will pose as the following characters: Dr. Strange 2.0, Dr. Strange Steve Ditko version (blue cloak), Kato, Green Lantern, Spider-Man Noir 1.0, Cyclops, Wonder Man, Ultimate Alliance Daredevil, Dr. Fate, and my first villain, DC’s Ultra Man.

CA: Wow, that’s a lot of characters! How long does it take you to assemble a costume, and what’s the general cost?

BG: Generally depending upon the character, it can take as quickly as 30 days or as long as 4 months. It’s a block party in Camden, New Jersey held every last Saturday in the month of June. I do to it to give inner city kids hope, to hold on, and to think about what you’re doing and how it can not only effect your life but others. There is a lot of pressure in the inner city to do all sorts of wrong things that have far reaching consequences which can affect your life as an adult. Simply stated, it’s to make them think in the dire hour of decision what would Batman, Green Lantern, or a Dr Strange do? Hopefully by seeing these characters as a child they may remember and hold on to the courage these heroes represent in their hour of need.

CA: Have you ever had any awkward or negative experiences while in costume you can share with us?

BG: The first time I wore Batman at Wizard World, it was 89 degrees and very humid with a bright sun. In time, I would like to see a convention that just focuses on cosplay where the dealers are prop makers, costume makers, and suppliers. What was the first comic book you ever read? How about owned?

ERIC MORAN: I’ve been a comic book fan since I was 4 years old. My older brother Billy got me into comics. I remember, I would wait for him when he would get home from work late at night to see the latest issues of whatever books he had. It would get so bad that he would hide the comics under his pillow so I wouldn’t read them before he would. One of the first books I ever read was Spider-Man. The first book I ever owned was a Borris Karloff horror comic book and to this day it is still one of my favorites.

CA: How did you discover cosplay, and what made you want to get into it on a serious level?

EM: I was a cosplayer before it was known as cosplay. Way back in the early ’90s, I would go to Star Trek conventions dressed like Lt. Worf and loved it ever since. I didn’t start getting serious until the last 6 years. I had been attending some Comic Cons and I was blown away by all the costumes. I started to think, “How can I be dressed as my favorite superheroes?” So I did.

CA: Who was the first character you cosplayed as? Whom have you portrayed since?

EM: The first character I cosplayed as was Lt. Cmdr. La Forge from Star Trek; TNG. Since then I’ve portrayed the Rocketeer, Gears of War, Captain America , War Machine, Batman, Captain Marvel, Neo, Spawn, V for Vendetta, Lt. Worf, Derrick Wildstar (Star Blazers), Darth Maul, a Ghosterbuster, Cyclops, Crazy Eighty-Eight (Kill Bill), Firestorm, The Smoke, The Shadow, Rios (Army of Two), and Green Lantern.

CA: Which characters do you plan to represent in the future?

EM: I’m looking to do at least seven new costumes for 2011. The one costume that I’m doing [now] is a new character from DC Universe whom I’m patterned after. his name is Freight Train from “The Outsiders”. I remember being 14, going to a very, very tiny Anime convention in Australia with my friend Ken. He had just downloaded Dragonball GT and we were about 1/3rd of the way through it and randomly I said “Hey, I’m going to dress up as Pan!” I have always been into wearing costumes. I can sew but I’m not the worlds best pattern drafter; in fact when I do sew from scratch I tend to just grab fabric and start cutting and pinning until it looks right and then sew it all together. My Scarlet Witch skirt and cape were made that exact way, same with the dress I’m making for Medusa, Queen of the Inhumans. When I can, I prefer to buy base components for my costumes and adapt them to fit what I need, rather than attempting to make from scratch. Making from scratch is satisfying but slow; if I made everything from scratch I’d probably manage 1 costume a year, when I want to be assembling 3 if not 4 in a year. Ebay and Etsy are my main hunting grounds, although Fredricks of Hollywood and Thrift Shops have turned up some surprisingly useful pieces in the past, to my eternal delight.

Panda poses as Scarlet Witch at a past SDCC.

CA: Tell us all the characters you’ve cosplayed as in the past. You do get some snarky comments, there is always that small percentage of fans that consider their idols sacred, and that in some way cosplayers are demeaning them by dressing up as them. I don’t personally understand that mentality, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and all but live and let live. To each their own. Besides, you can barely hear the very faint “oh my god, what is wrong with those people?!” over all the “hey picture? You look great, can I take your picture!” requests.

CA: What’s your favorite part about cosplaying?

PV: When you’re out on the convention floor and someone comes up to you and says “That costume is my favorite character/ my favorite costume and you’ve brought her/it to life perfectly.” I tend to try and pick characters that are just a bit to the left of the mainstream, ones that aren’t A-listers but tend to be fan favorites. For example when I did Emma Frost she was only just beginning to transition from a Hellfire Club/ Gen X character into the flagship Uncanny X-Men book. The first year I did her a lot of people asked if I was Storm. When I planned to do Star Sapphire it was actually almost 8 months before Blackest Night hit, when Carol was still a sometime villain from the Green Lantern books. I go to the conventions to see the fun costumes as much as to be seen in my fun costumes, so I went over there all excited, telling her she looked awesome and could I please take her photo. And got an exasperated “fine” and an eye roll as a reply and a very, very sullen looking photograph. I didn’t know if I had bothered her, or somehow offended her by asking. I wanted to just flee but then people kept asking for pictures of the two of us, so I smiled and posed, and was very, very happy to hightail it out of there at the first opportunity. I still don’t know why I got the eye roll but it was the single most awkward thing that ever happened to me at a convention.

CA: On the flip side, have you had any cool encounters with comic book creators you could tell us about while in costume?

PV: I have a terrible confession to make, I don’t sight recognize any comic book writers other than Mark Brooks. A touch oblivious, I am. So I may have interacted with comic book creators and not known it. I’m a terrible fan girl, I know, I know.

The coolest encounter with a comic book writer and someone in costume I ever saw, however, was at this year’s [San Diego] ComicCon. My friend Eddie was dressed as Deadpool and we went to the Rob Liefeld panel, myself and another friend, Sean, were in plain clothes acting as handlers for Eddie. Rob had Eddie come right up on the stage and chill out up there as he was giving the panel. No one knew this but Eddie’s mask has been having a bit of a malfunction right before the panel and we had glued it back on with extremely strong, very potent glue. All of a sudden I see Eddie, as Deadpool, start kind of swaying a little and dancing in his seat. Which was perfectly in character, so no one noticed or commented if they did, but I couldn’t resist sending Eddie a text that said “Are you drunk on glue fumes up there?” He didn’t think it was funny, but I did. After Rob asked me to email him the photos, which I tried to do but I’m not sure I had the right email address, so if anyone happens to know Rob Liefeld’s email, could you let me know? I owe him a couple photographs.

You should try the ’67 Blood Merlot. This is the first ever Cosplayer of the Month! However… we’re starting off with an explanation. There are still many people who don’t know or understand what cosplaying is, so this will be the base to build our Cosplayer of the Month column.

Cosplayers as Jewel and Ms. Marvel from Wizard World Texas 2008

To get started, what exactly is cosplay? The word itself is a combination of “costume play.” This is a Japanese based term, similar to the definition for masquerade: a costume or disguise worn at an event. Fans dress up in costume and act like their favorite character. Western cosplaying has actually been around since the mid 80’s. Due to the growing popularity of cosplaying, many conventions now have costume contests, cosplay shows, and skits where cosplayers can act as their characters on stage.

Cosplayers are usually considered to be people who are dressing as Japanese anime/video games/manga characters (you know, Final Fantasy, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, etc). This idea is changing slightly as Western cosplayers also dress as characters from comic books (such as Marvel, DC, and Aspen), television shows (such as Star Trek, Doctor Who, and Battlestar Galactica), and movies (such as Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Alien Vs Predator).

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-4178 " src="https://comicattack.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/cosplayrainbow.jpg" alt="Cosplayers as Supergirl, Dr. Who, Capt. Jack Sparrow, Jack and Sally, and Rikku

Cosplaying is a hobby that is, at this point, becoming more and more prominent in Western Culture. Cosplayers are definitely a staple at conventions, be it anime, comics, or sci-fi. If you attend a major, or sometimes even a minor convention, you’re bound to see a woman in a Catwoman costume being followed by a Batman.

Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bear fans

Now, you may ask why somebody would willingly dress up in a character costume and step out into public. What drives these people? It’s simple really; we dress up in costume for the same reason sports fans wear jerseys and paint themselves. To show our love! We adore the characters in comic books, movies, television, anime, etc. There really isn’t much difference between a girl who dresses up as Wonder Woman and a fan who dresses as a Viking to root for the Minnesota Vikings.

What must also be realized is that many cosplayers who dress up make their own costumes. They spend a lot of time working on the costume, putting in many hours to style a wig, sew a costume, or create a prop, and they take pride in their work. Then there are the fans who don’t put much effort into their costumes. It’s a spectrum of effort and if you go to a convention, you’ll see what I mean.

Overall, cosplaying is a chance to be someone else, someone exciting. It’s the ultimate way to show love for a character. In the upcoming months, I’ll be showing you the best of the best. The fans who dress up and give the character justice by not only their costumes, but hair, contact lenses, and make-up. So prepare yourself. You’re going to meet the fans who make cosplaying look good.

Dee McNamara

contact@comicattack.net
