I have spent my life reading comics, watching the cartoons, collecting the figures and collectibles, going to conventions, seeing the movies, and I’m proud of all those things no matter how much society tells me I’m a geek.

As much as I love Marvel comics and movies, DC has a special place in my heart. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. In my opinion, Marvel has the better stories while DC has the better characters. Ever since the age of six-years-old, Superman and Batman have been my all time favorite comic book characters. Sometimes I even connect more to these characters than some actual people I’ve met in reality. I love these characters, and have loved seeing them come to the big and small screen.

Speaking of the big screen, there hasn’t been a better time to be both a fan of comic books and cinema. This has been the best time for fans to see our favorite caped crusaders, vigilantes, web-heads, heroes, and comic book cinematic universes.

As a fan of both Marvel and DC, I want both their cinematic universes to be great for all. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) I’m a fan of. They continue to grow, introduce new stories, and characters. On the other hand, I do find the MCU to be a little repetitive, and we need something new. The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) I thought was going to be something new. Something a bit more dark in tone, serious, and offer something other than the MCU structure.

I personally was a fan of the DCEU tone, but some of their films I found to be poorly written with the stories and characters. It is also sad to see how so many people and critics are being harsh and dislike the DCEU. I enjoy ‘Man of Steel’, didn’t care for ‘Batman v Superman’, was let down by ‘Suicide Squad’, and I love ‘Wonder Woman’. With the last DCEU film ‘Wonder Woman’ being loved by most people, I thought fans and critics were going to enjoy the DCEU on the same scale as the MCU, and that the DCEU was moving in a positive direction. ‘Justice League’ is not only my most anticipated movie of 2017, but one of my most anticipated films ever. It is finally here, the big blockbuster debut of the Justice League. As a lifelong fan, it truly hurts me to say that ‘Justice League’ is a massive disappointment.

A Massive Disappointment?

I’m not going to get too deep into the plot. If you are reading this, keeping up with the DCEU, and know these characters and the comics, I’m sure you know what this is about.

I do think some of the critics are just being harsh. I saw one critic call the film “unwatchable” and that DC stands for “Distasteful Cinema”. I really hope critics are not being dicks just for the sake of being dicks.

For starters, the movie is poorly written. I hate to keep comparing the DCEU to Marvel films, but the way Marvel set up their cinematic universe is much better than the way DC is doing it. Marvel had a plan, introduce the solo movies, make references, fanservice, and then we introduce the big dream team. DC feels ass backwards, Batman v Superman felt like the third or fourth movie that should have taken place in a cinematic universe.

The film could have and should have been written where these characters naturally come across each other, instead of Batman going from person to person trying to recruit them for the team. For instance, maybe Cyborg, played by Ray Fisher, needs something for his suit, so he goes into Wayne Enterprises to get the technology. The way these characters meet for the first time is a real dud. It really is, “Hi, I’m Bruce Wayne. I think some crazy shit is about to go down, and I randomly need someone like you. You in?”

Also, the movie literally just jumps from hero to hero without any real reasoning. It starts out with Batman, and then randomly jumps to Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot, helping people against a bank heist and a bomb. The writing is sloppy and all over the place when it comes to story and how these characters meet. The film makes the writing seems as if it were extremely rushed.

It really is written as a generic superhero film. Superpower beings and Batman, get together to fight the villain. Fans wanted the DCEU to be more like Marvel, and like Marvel, I find SteppenWolf to be a sorry ass villain. He is nothing more than a PlayStation 3 CGI looking character that is a giant two year old, because everything is “Mine!”

What About the Team Though?

I don’t want to come off like I hate this movie, because I don’t. It’s just as a lifelong and massive fan, I expect better. But one of the better things about this movie, and the DCEU so far, is how well they got the team right.

The plot, villain, and story were weak. On the other hand, the cast was great, and I love how they portrayed these characters and got them right. Gal Gadot is still one of my favorite actresses, and I love her as Wonder Woman. My favorite team members are easily Wonder woman and Ezra Miller as ‘The Flash’. Cyborg was cool, and his CGI suit does look better in the movie than in the trailers. He even said, “Boo-Yah!” Jason Momoa made Aquaman badass. Even though I think he gets the shortest amount of screen time, and the film didn’t do much with his water abilities. I know these characters will get their solo movies in the near future, but Aquaman should have done some balls to the wall crazy water shit at least once. How cool would it have been if Aquaman called in a shark, and said to Bruce Wayne, “You wanted to know if I could talk to fish, right?”

The World’s Finest

It was also a nice Easter egg for fans to hear the old Superman theme, and Danny Elfman’s 1989 Batman theme in the film.

Speaking of Superman, this is the Superman fans have been waiting to see for years. Let’s cut the B.S., we all know Superman is in this film. I do wish he would have come back with the black suit though. Me personally, the return of Superman could have packed more of a punch if this were all written a little better. Me personally, I would do the unexpected to really give people a surprise. Continue the DCEU, have Superman be dead for at least three years, and then he returns. However, when he returns, maybe he is the villain, or like Superman from the first Injustice game. Later down the line, he becomes the Superman we all know and love. Just to throw people a curve, and give them the unexpected.

Speaking of the unexpected, yah boy Ben Affleck was great as Batman in Batman v Superman. But I really did get the feeling as if he does not want to continue as The Dark Knight anymore. We’ve seen Affleck act before, and he is barely acting in this He looks bored and as if he were sleepwalking through his movie. If the rumors are true on Jake Gyllenhaal (‘Nightcrawler’) replacing him as Batman, I’m all for it now.

Snyder and Whedon the Dream Team

Zack Snyder unfortunately had some serious issues to deal with, and Joss Whedon (Marvel’s The Avengers) had to step in and finish the film. Which the two directors sounds like the ultimate dream team for some fans. But I can’t help but notice the reshoots, and how it is night and day when you can tell Zack Snyder’s film and Joss Whedon. Snyder still has the darkness going, which I like the dark tone that separated them from Marvel. While Whedon brings a lighter and more humorous tone to the project. The two styles really standout to me, and do not mesh together all that well.

After seeing this movie, I was disappointed. Mainly because the story could have been better. I thought the DCEU was headed in a better direction after Wonder Woman, and I know this could have been far superior to what we got.

I’m a huge fan of these characters, and comics. DC is improving, but I’m sort of tired of taking baby steps with them. Let’s really get the ball rolling, let’s prove haters wrong, let’s stop making movies that have a 90s plot and structure, let’s get our shit together.

Stop rushing the cinematic universe, call in the right people, don’t be afraid to be yourself, and most importantly have fun. I wish I could have loved the film and story as much as I love the portrayal of characters and the cast. I’m still a fan, and I believe the DCEU will and needs to pick things up. None of this R-Rated cut, extended cut, ultimate cut, or whatever cut you have. Just release a really good movie the first time around. I’d give ‘Justice League’ a…

6 out of 10

Nile Fortner
Nile@comicattack.net

Movie Multiverse: Doctor Strange

Nile Fortner

Columns

Fantasy

Marvel

Movie Multiverse

Nile Fortner

Reviews

banner

Cinematic Universe

Comic Book Movie

Comic Book Movies

Doctor Strange

Dr. Strange

Film

Marvel Cinematic Universe

MCU

Movie

Movie Review

Nile Fortner Review

Opinion

review

Everything is Getting Magical in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Looking Back At When The Sorcerer Supreme Made His Big Screen Debut For Marvel! I have a friend who said the superhero genre is starting to all feel so similar, and isn’t breaking new ground. Many fans, including myself, do see Marvel trying to bring in changes to there films. I decided to go back and look at the movie, ‘Doctor Strange’. Mainly because, I believe that is when Marvel really got kicking with trying to shake up the superhero movie genre.

Can you believe it folks? We have truly come a long way. Can you believe that ‘Doctor Strange‘ was the 14th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? At this point, you would think that some of these Marvel Studio films would get a little predictable, feel a little stale, and seem like there are no other areas to explore. On the other hand, Marvel has been doing a very well job of introducing lesser-known heroes, mixing up the genre, and finding a way to change up there formatting and still stay fresh. ‘Doctor Strange’ is the 14th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and with films like this, I want to say cheers to another 14. This film is the freshest thing Marvel has done since the first ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘!

Dr. Stephen Strange played by Benedict Cumberbatch (‘The Imitation Game’ and ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’), is a successful yet arrogant doctor. One night, life changes after a car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he looks for healing, and hope, in a mysterious enclave. He quickly learns that the enclave is at the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying reality. Before long, Strange is forced to choose between his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.

Get Spellbound With Doctor Strange!

For those who may not know much about Doctor Strange, let me drop some quick knowledge on yah. Dr. Strange first popped out of the glorious head of legendary comic book artist Steve Ditko, and comic book legend Stan Lee (a pairing best known for Spider-Man). Dr. Strange appeared in 1963, around the time ‘Harvard’ fired Timothy Leary and a colleague for conducting experiments with hallucinogens. In interviews, early comic book writer for Dr. Strange Roy Thomas has mentioned that it was trippy visuals, the drugs of the 60s, high on shrooms, hallucinations, ‘Chandu the Magician‘, Egyptian myths, cosmology, acid, and more that has inspired such a legendary character, that we still love to this day.

Now Doctor Strange may be Marvel’s best looking movie, however it is not Marvel’s best film. The first thing we have to talk about are the visuals, because this film has some really spectacular visuals. The buildings gnarl and twist like segments of a Rubik’s Cube. Balconies become playgrounds, they buckle over and start spinning, threatening to smash down on various characters like a maniacal rolling pin. Gravity flips and shifts with each camera angle as the goons look like inebriated hamsters on a wheel. The basic physics concepts you are used to no longer work in the way you have been taught. It is like watching reality tear itself apart.

The director, Scott Derrickson (‘Sinister’ and ‘The Day The Earth Stood Still’) crafted a beautiful world. Filled with color, snazzy visuals, and style. The cinematography is literally some of the best work I have seen out of any Marvel flick. I truly believe that this film could have been nominated for visual effects. Similarly, I know many people compared the visuals to ‘The Matrix’ and ‘Inception’. Even though it takes inspiration from those films, it is not completely ripping them off. The magic and sorcery are just so enchanting to look at whenever it shows up on screen. I usually like to watch regular 2D movies. On the other hand, I usually would not recommend this but if you can see this movie in 3D you should. This is the type of film you want to see in your face.

Benedict Cumberbatch is literally a perfect ‘Doctor Strange’. He looks just like the character in the comics. He is funny (‘Doctor Strange’ likes Beyonce), confused, has intellect, arrogant, and passionate. This character is extremely relatable to a majority of people, and that is why we feel something for the character. Before this film started shooting the rumor going around was Jared Leto, Adrien Brody, and Joaquin Phoenix were all considered for the role. In addition, even though all those actors are extremely talented. I am glad they went with Mr. Cumberbatch. Also, in my opinion Chiwetel Ejiofor (‘Triple 9′ and ’12 Years A Slave’) always performs as if he is wanting to win an Oscar. Every time he is on screen, he gives a spectacular performance.

If You Have Seen Other Superhero Films (Especially Marvel) Doctor Strange Will Come Off Familiar?

Once again, my only complaint with ‘Marvel’ is they rush the origin story and have a somewhat forgettable villain. The villains are getting a little bit more well rounded, however, the villain in this movie played by Mads Mikkelsen (‘Casino Royale’ and ‘Hannibal’), and for someone named Mads he comes off a little easy going for a villain.

Overall, i still feel the same may about this movie as i did when it first came out. It has a very cool character, it is another great adaption in the M.C.U., it has wonderful visuals, and I think most people will enjoy it. I am more than proud to give Doctor Strange a…

9 out of 10!

So those are my thoughts on the film, and I’m glad ‘Marvel’ is starting to switch things up. The last thing I want, and I’m sure you want is the superhero genre getting bland. Marvel films like ‘Doctor Strange’ were a good and clear sign of Marvel taking chances, and mixing things up for the better. With upcoming films like ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and ‘Black Panther’, I believe there has never been a better time to see comics adapted for the big screen.

Thank you all for reading, and or viewing, and I hope you all have a good day and night as always.

Nile Fortner
Nile@comicattack.net

Movie Multiverse: Spider – Man: Homecoming

Nile Fortner

Columns

Humor

Marvel

Movie Multiverse

Movies

Nile Fortner

Reviews

Amazing Spider-Man

banner

Captain America: Civil War

Comic Book Movie

Film

Film Review

Iron Man

Marvel Cinematic Universe

Marvel Movie

Marvel Studios

Marvel's The Avengers

MCU

Michael Keaton

Movie Review

Spider - Man Movies

Spider - Man: Homecoming Movie Review

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spiderman

The Avengers

Tom Holland

Our favorite web-head is here on the big screen (again), Peter Parker is back! Alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, this is one of the biggest Marvel movies of the year.

Marvel introducing Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War was a big step for them. It allowed them to introduce their version of one of the most popular characters in Marvel and comic book history, Spider – Man. Now set in the MCU, fans and moviegoers get a new look at the origin of Spider – Man. We don’t need to see the radioactive Spider bite, we don’t need the whole “with great power comes great responsibility”, we all got that already.

The film is set a couple months after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Peter Parker, now being played a third time by Tom Holland (Locke, In the Heart of the Sea) who misses all the fun and excitement of being an Avenger and wants to cash in on some more good ol’ Avenger action. Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr. wants to keep Peter on the ground to be a friendly neighborhood spider-man. Parker agrees and keeps to fighting crime in Queens, New York. Eventually, his activities are starting to get in the way of his extra-curricular school activities, including the school debate team headed by his high school crush Liz, played by Laura Harrier. Some deadly weapons start appearing around New York. Peter wanting to prove himself to Stark decides to investigate the weapons with help from his friend Ned, played by Jacob Batalon, who accidentally discovered Peter’s secret identity. They discover that the weapons are left over from The Avengers battles and being scavenged by Adrian Toomes, played by Michael Keaton, and his crew to sell on the black market.

Out of the entire Spider – Man movies we have seen, this is definitely the funniest, and in my opinion much better than the Sony Amazing Spider – Man movies. The film does a good job of showing us Peter Parker in high school. He feels and looks like a real high school student with real high school problems. The movie does a great job of balancing the coming of age teenage story with Peter coming into his own as a hero. Holland does a good Spider – Man, but he also realizes how important it is to get Peter Parker right and relatable as well. As Peter Parker, he’s awkward, nervous, gawky, and socially a little off. As Spider-Man, he’s fun, adventurous, and best of all, he absolutely loves being a superhero!

My favorite part of the film would definitely be the characters. Zendaya’s character, Michelle, is a fun addition to the film, she doesn’t add a whole lot to the story, but she was really funny, cuckoo, and honestly made me laugh and smile more than any other character. I just love how she would appear out of nowhere, and say something dark and random in a very wearisome way.

Peter’s best friend, Ned was something really special to see. I could connect with that character because I was that character in high school. Batalon and Holland have great chemistry, and come off as real good friends. Much like Zendaya’s character, Ned is endearing source of laughs and awe, constantly surprised by everything that’s around him, and geeking out like most of us would if we found out our best friend was Spider – Man.

It also looks like Marvel is listening to the criticism fans having been saying about the weak villains. We have been getting some really good and well written villains in the MCU lately. Great villains such as Ego the Living Planet, Alexander Pierce, Zemo, and now Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes a.k.a The Vulture can now join that list. I honestly think Keaton is the best villain in the MCU right behind Loki. A well written villain, with a motive, and a reasoning. This isn’t a spoiler, but one of my favorite lines in the movie is when Spider – Man ask Vulture “How can you do this to her?” Vulture replies, “To her? I’m doing this for her.”

Earlier I mentioned how much I loved the characters in this film. I know many people are really digging the new, young, and always lustful lookin’ Aunt May. On the other hand, the film played up that she is hot a little too much. I understand the filmmakers made her closer to Parker’s age because it will make her more relatable to a teenage character. Call me old fashioned and a geek, but I like my old, wise, and always lustful lookin’ old Aunt May. The old Aunt May that gave Peter words of wisdom, insight, and had more to offer than just her looks.

Similarly, Peter’s love interest, Liz, feels a little weak, and it’s hard to judge because the two do not spend a lot of screen time together if you can believe that. Liz lacked the steez and spunk of a Mary Jane or Gwen Stacy. However, she does play a big part later on in the film, a part I did not see coming.

Furthermore, I feel like when you are watching this, you can tell the differences between Marvel involvement and Sony’s involvement. What looks and feels like Sony from the previous Amazing Spider – Man movies probably is. Remember all that talk about Sony at the Sinister Six movie? That looks like it still on. It’s like Marvel said to Sony, “Yeah, we can work on this together. But to let you know we really own this, we are going to piss on it with Iron Man.”Speaking of Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man isn’t in the movie that much, and at times it feels like this is one big commercial advertising, “Hey, Spider – Man will be in the next Avenger’s movie!”

Spider – Man: Homecoming is the funniest Spider – Man film, and the one that grabs the most inspiration from the comics. The movie did a good job with characters, and I’m looking forward to seeing Holland as Spidey again. I do think this film is a little weak when it comes to Raimi’s films, especially with the second. All that being said, I believe Spider – Man: Homecoming earns a…

7 out of 10!

So that’s my opinion on the movie, what’s yours, did you love it, like it, or hate it? Also, what is your favorite Spider – Man movie? For me the title still goes to 2004’s spider – Man 2.
