Jason Aaron and Ed McGuiness’ incredible new take on the Marvel Universe where the Avengers never assembled and the Squadron Supreme took their place as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes starts in May. But that’s only the beginning. On sale in June, this unpredictable story marches to its startling climax in HEROES REBORN #5-7 as the history and future of this new world is unveiled.

In HEROES REBORN #5, witness a riot at the Ravencroft Asylum! Nighthawk must descend alone into a realm of madness, surrounded by the most deranged members of his notorious rogues’ gallery, including his archenemy, the maniacal Goblin.

HEROES REBORN #6 will turn the spotlight on the fabled daughter of Utopia Isle known as Power Princess. She’s defeated the All-Gog, Gorr the God Butcher and the King in Black, but now she must venture into the ruins of Asgard, where something unexplained is stirring in the graveyard of the gods.

And the matchup you’ve been waiting for arrives in HEROES REBORN #7! Together they ended the Kree/Skrull war, defeated Dr. Doom in his Secret War and even endured their own civil war between Hyperion and Nighthawk, but now the Squadron Supreme of America faces their greatest challenge yet: a mysterious new group of troublemakers called the Avengers.

June will also bring a series of new Heroes Reborn one-shots from all-star creative teams!

This is the Squadron’s world, and the age of vigilantes is over. Police Commissioner Luke Cage has one job: Find the scum and eliminate them – before ambition takes them beyond the city streets. Backed by the Squadron Supreme, Commissioner Cage takes care of criminals who’ve escaped justice in HEROES REBORN: AMERICAN KNIGHTS by writer Paul Grist and artist Christopher Allen.

HEROES REBORN: AMERICAN KNIGHTS #1
Written by PAUL GRIST
Art by CHRISTOPHER ALLEN
Cover by CHRIS SPROUSE

Meet Nightbird in HEROES REBORN: NIGHT-GWEN by writer Vita Ayala and artist Farid Karami. Their argument plays out like you would expect, but when Sharon Carter arrives on the scene and accuses Jet of being a traitor, things go downhill from there. However, the real reason for this issue is the big announcement that Steve has to make. So the call is put out to ALL of the Avengers from the A list to guys they probably forgot were asked to be members.

There’s quite the emotional punch during the talk between Zola and Jet. Remender actually makes it believable that he is a loving father and is only looking out for his daughter. Though it didn’t feel quite right when Sam didn’t fight for her as hard as he probably should of when Sharon started to accuse her. Such a good job was done earlier in establishing how Sam felt that things just felt a bit off in that sequence.

What really works well here is that Remender doesn’t shy away from the levity in this issue. Even when everyone thought Falcon was dead, Remender brings him back with some well placed humor which provoked a chuckle or two. Not only that, but even during the meeting there’s quite a few jokes along the way between the members that was a bit reminiscent of some of those 80s Avengers issues. Remender even pokes fun at the issue itself when Falcon emerges in his new costume. His dialogue is pretty spot on, and just might reflect what the reader is feeling. That’s a bit unfortunate as well, since this could have been a much bigger moment with a stronger impact had we not known about this months ago.

This brings me to the cover for this issue. In the past, a cover like this was used to get people talking and speculating. Friends would get together and debate on who they thought would be “the one.” Since Cap’s replacement was revealed months ago that image has NO type of impact as a visual teaser. It is unfortunate the reveal was so far in advance, because the only thing this cover does now is elicit eye rolls and snarky comments from fans.

Artwork throughout the issue is pretty strong from Pacheco aside from the various stages of Sharon Carter. In some panels she looks as if she’s aged right along with Steve, then she’d look younger again. Then she also goes up a few cup sizes, which just makes her look pretty silly. Immonen handles the epilogue, and aside from a character that is Storm’s Hydra twin, it moves pretty well. The similarity probably wouldn’t be so bad if she wasn’t introduced as a major character, and the eye in the middle of her forehead doesn’t do much to change her appearance.

We have a new Captain America and new adventures waiting, so it will be nice to see where Remender takes this. It is a solid issue that could have been a lot stronger had we not known the replacement months ago. However, there is a twist thrown in during the epilogue that was a huge surprise, and guessing who that character’s identity is won’t be so easy.

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

Marvel Reviews: Ultimate Comics Avengers #3 Review

InfiniteSpeech

Infinite Speech

Marvel

Reviews

Captain America

Carlos Pacheco

Mark Millar

Nick Fury

Tony Stark

Ultimate Comics Avengers #3 Review

Publisher: Marvel Writer: Mark Millar Artists: Carlos Pacheco Cover: Carlos Pacheco, Danny Miki, & Justin Ponsor “The Next Generation pt 3“: Ultimate Comics Avengers is shaping up to be one of the best books in what remains of Marvel’s Ultimate Universe! Mark Millar continues chapter 3 with an introduction to the new lineup, as they prep to bring in an AWOL Captain America. We’re first introduced to Dr. Gregory Stark who is described as being amoral and 10 times smarter than his brother, Tony Stark a.k.a Iron Man. The former terrorist, the Insect Queen (now code named Red Wasp), a Hulk built from Banner’s stem cells that will keep Banner’s intellect and the Hulk’s strength all in one body… sound familiar? The rest of the team is filled out with a new Black Widow, Hawkeye, War Machine, Nick Fury and a mysterious guy in Spider-Man’s costume.

Things slow down from the first two issues to allow us time to meet everyone. From War Machine’s explosive yet controversial intro to Black Widow’s banter with Fury, not much about whats going on with Cap is revealed. Only that Fury is pissed (what else is new?) and that keeping Cap from Red Skull is priority #1! The last few pages where we get to see some of the team members in action during their attempt to take Cap are great! Pacheco’s work is just consistently awesome from page to page. I especially liked the Red Wasp’s taking out of the terrorist cell and then what she does to the last guy is just brutal, and she then uses his dead body as a chair to take a phone call!

When it comes to the story in this issue no answers are given and Millar gives individual spotlights to the team. Cap is the subplot here, but Millar makes it work just fine. The dialogue throughout the issue is what kept the story from being stale and repetitive which it easily could have been. Though I will say that I was a lot more interested in finding out the mystery behind who is in the Spider-Man suit because Gregory Stark referred to him as “it”, and apparently “it” knows Fury and Hawkeye.

Even with the main plot playing the background role in this one and the only reveal is the final team roster it’s a solid issue; the book isn’t called Ultimate Cap it’s Ultimate Avengers so it’s about time they got to shine in their own title! This is the halfway point of the opening arc, and since Millar has set us up for a potentially great story lets hope the payoff is worth it. I’m definitely looking forward to a Hulk vs. Cap rematch even if it’s not the original Hulk from the Ultimates!

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

Marvel Reviews: Ultimate Avengers Review #’s 1-2

InfiniteSpeech

Infinite Speech

Marvel

Reviews

Captain America

Carlos Pacheco

Mark Millar

Nick Fury

Red Skull

Ultimate Avengers Review

Publisher: Marvel Writer: Mark Millar Artist: Carlos Pacheco Cover: Carlos Pacheco, Danny Miki, Laura Martin “The Next Generation” Pts 1 & 2: Whatever your feelings are towards Marvel’s Ultimate line you can count on them to deliver shocks and surprises! Taking what you know about familiar characters and upping the ante to where you either love it or hate it! Personally I’ve loved several of the titles in Marvel’s alternate universe, and none more so than the Ultimates. So when I heard about the crossover Ultimatum event that would kill off many of the characters in the Ultimate line of books, I was worried if this issue would even be worth it. Even with Millar writing this series, skepticism crept in and I basically wondered…”Can I further be impressed by this alternate version of some of Marvel’s finest?”

The first issue takes place 3 weeks after the events in Ultimatum, with Hawkeye letting Nick Fury know that Captain America has gone rogue and he knows about the Red Skull. We then flashback to the previous day’s events, and we have Hawkeye hanging from a helicopter as Cap comes flying out of a sky scraper window on a motorcycle to assist! They easily take out the A.I.M. terrorists inside and make their way towards the second chopper. One thing missing from the mission though is Iron Man, however he’s busy being depressed about what he did to Wolverine in the last issue of Ultimatum. So he’s spending time at the bottom of a bottle at an exclusive gentleman’s club. Cap and Hawkeye do seem to be handling things just fine without him, as Cap has made the jump to the second chopper and cleared out the bad guys. Then from the front of the chopper appears a huge scarlet faced man who quickly introduces his right fist to Cap’s face! Let’s just say you could tie your shoes in the amount of time it takes for this guy to hand Cap his ass! At the final moment he pulls Captain America close and whispers something, right before tossing him out of the cargo bay doors!

The second installment starts in 1945 and bounces around time a little to catch us up to the present day events. We get the origin of Cap’s assailant and the real reason Hawkeye was sent to see Nick Fury. S.H.I.E.L.D wants Cap found, so project Avengers is given the go ahead and Fury is going to hand pick the team to get the job done. Too much more info on this issue will just ruin it for anyone who hasn’t read it, and I don’t want to put out a spoiler fest here!

I will say that in these two issue Mark Millar has done a great job in answering a lot of questions quickly and effectively! Crafting a different origin story for one of Cap’s oldest foes that changes everything, and it’s perfect! There’s still enough mystery left with all of these reveals to leave you salivating for the next issue as well! Carlos Pacheco’s visuals are just top notch, and I will eat humble pie and admit that I was not a big fan of his earlier work and wasn’t thrilled about the choice of artist. He makes you feel the beating that Cap took, and then Cap’s escape from the plane in Ultimate Avengers # 2 was great! I just want him to put someone besides Cap and Hawkeye on the next cover!

Earlier I asked myself if I could still be impressed, and the answer is a definitive YES!

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net
