HEAVY VINYL: RIOT ON THE RADIO, written by Carly Usdin and with art by Nina Vakueva, was originally published in print by BOOM! Studios in 2017 and amassed a global following. HEAVY VINYL: RIOT ON THE RADIO will be available via Tapas through their website and mobile apps available for both iOS and Android, and Tapas Media will debut the new HEAVY VINYL original graphic novel exclusively on their digital platform prior to its physical release.

Michael Son, Editor-In-Chief, Tapas Media, commented: “Getting the opportunity to work with a once-in-a-generation editor like Shannon Watters is a dream come true for us. From The Avant-Guards, Fence, and HEAVY VINYL, BOOM! Studios is showcasing that they’re incredibly forward thinking when it comes to storytelling both from a narrative and talent perspective. HEAVY VINYL in particular is full of deeply relatable characters that capture all the nuances, excitement and honesty of growing up, Nina Vakueva and Carly Usdin did a spectacular job, and I can’t wait for it to grace Tapas.”

Chang Kim, CEO, Tapas Media added: “We can’t wait to showcase HEAVY VINYL on Tapas. The art style and writing make it a perfect fit for the webcomic audience, and we know that our readers are going to love it just as much as we did. What’s most exciting for us is taking a physically published comic and giving it new life and a new readership with our mobile apps, creating synergies between print and digital.”

“We’re excited to to kick off our partnership with Tapas Media by bringing the exciting world of HEAVY VINYL to millions of new readers,” said Filip Sablik, President, BOOM! Studios. From RIOT ON THE RADIO to a brand new original graphic novel, fans of HEAVY VINYL will enjoy seeing the way Tapas has adapted and expanded the world of your favorite teen vigilante fight club to their platform.”

Created by Haim Saban and launched in 1993 with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the franchise celebrates its milestone anniversary year with the 26th season, Power Rangers: Beast Morphers currently airing on Nickelodeon in the U.S.

“Everything turns upside down as Karone and Andros are forced to deal with the rise of the Psycho Rangers, causing Karone to struggle with her identity as the dark and power-hungry Astronema and pulling Andros along for the ride as he tries to help his sister.” said Dafna Pleban, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Things get dark and dire in space, giving fans a chance to glimpse into the shadows behind the mysterious rebirth of these twisted versions of the original mighty heroes.”

BOOM! Studios today unveiled a first look at SPARROWHAWK #1, the hotly-anticipated new five-issue limited series from acclaimed writer Delilah S. Dawson (Ladycastle, Star Wars: Forces of Destiny) and rising star artist Matias Basla (The Claw and Fang) debuting in stores on October 3rd.

Artemisia is the daughter of a Naval Captain born of two very different worlds and she’s never fit in with her father’s family, nor the high-class life to which they belong in the complicated time that is the Victorian Era of London, 1851. But Art’s about to pulled into another realm with even deadlier threats courtesy of the Faerie Queen and now must find a way to save her home world that has always hated her.

The First Hit Of “Bone Parish”

LOS ANGELES, CA (March 26, 2018) – BOOM! Studios is proud to announce BONE PARISH #1, an all-new chilling necromantic horror series from superstar writer Cullen Bunn (The Unsound) and debuting artists Şerif & Mustafa Karasu in July 2018. A new drug is sweeping through the streets of New Orleans—one made from the ashes of the dead. Wars are being fought over who will control the supply, while the demand only rises. While the warring factions collide, users begin to experience terrifying visions of the dead coming back to life—through them.

Bone Parish #1 Main Cover by Lee Garbett

“BONE PARISH is a supernatural crime story, the story of a tenacious family that is determined to carve out their own empire despite overwhelming odds,” said writer Cullen Bunn. “The challenges they face originate both in this world and the next. They face pressure from rival criminal organizations that are much more powerful than they are. They must contend with internal strife as obsession and ambition tear away at them from within. And they face horrific threats from the restless spirits they stir as part of their sinister business dealings.”

“We are immensely excited and honored to be a part of developing this unpredictable, exceptional story alongside Cullen Bunn and BOOM! Studios,” said artists Mustafa & Serif Karasu. “We know this dynamic story will captivate and amaze fans the same way it has for us!”

BONE PARISH #1 features a main cover by Lee Garbett (Lucifer) and a variant cover by Rod Reis (Doctor Strange: Damnation).

“Harrow County. The Empty Man. Dark Ark. The Unsound. Regression. Cullen is one of comics’ preeminent horror authors, and these are just a handful of the amazing worlds he’s created,” said Eric Harburn, Editor, BOOM! Studios. “With its raw, unflinching look at the seedy underbelly of drug culture in a supernatural New Orleans, visualized through the haunting lens of newcomers Serif & Mustafa, BONE PARISH is the next great series to join that list.”

Sometime during the early 90’s Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, an american adaptation of Japan’s Super Sentai Series, debuted on american televisions and captivated children all across the country. The characters Jason Scott, Kimberly Hart, Zack Taylor, Trini Kwan and Billy Cranston became household names and over the next 20+ years The Power Rangers would go on to spawn four films and sell millions of toys and other merchandise across a generation. However, while it’s a safe assumption that today’s children are consuming whatever form Power Rangers is currently in, my generation lived through the crime fighting soap opera that was the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

My first impressions of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was that it was just a kick ass show full of martial arts action, some hooky acting, lots and lots of low budget pyrotechnics and giant kaiju vs. robot battles. Even with the initial main cast there wasn’t much substance to be had within the world of Power Rangers and honestly I don’t remember expecting any. However, that all changed with the addition of the Green Ranger, who is arguably the most interesting character in the shows history. With the Power Rangers formula of daily battles against the forces of the evil witch Rita Repulsa becoming wearing thin the world was introduced to the Green Ranger, Tommy Oliver. At first he was a mysterious figure complete with Ranger powers and his own dragon zord but fighting for the forces of evil. What played out was a surprisingly interesting drama as the Rangers attempted to first find out who this mystery Ranger was and the show detailed his internal struggle against Rita’s compulsion to do evil and eventual emergence as a hero who, ultimately joined the Power Rangers and battled at their side. It is here that Boom! has decided to jump start it’s Power Rangers series collected in this Year One Omnibus.

After liberating Tommy from Rita’s power, the team is struggling to integrate the Green Ranger into the team. While Jason is optimistic that Tommy will be a powerful ally, Zach isn’t quite convinced causing conflict between the two. While all that seems to be a nod toward the original plot of the tv show it’s the secrets Tommy holds that drive the story. Tommy isn’t as free of Rita’s influence as he’d like everyone to believe. She manifests herself to him as an apparition, filling his mind with disparaging thoughts and sowing self-doubt. Meanwhile, the real Rita actively seeks to drain him of his powers with the help of a mysterious and powerful new ally. Fighting Rita’s influence interferes with the power of the Green Ranger and causes the other rangers to lose confidence in Tommy’s ability, especially when he loses control of the Dragonzord and it begins destroying Angel Grove.

Boom! does an excellent job filling in the gaps left by the original tv series. While it may take some liberties, older fans will remember a lot of the events both leading up and during the pages of Year One. Without spoiling anything, it’s the midpoint and beyond where Boom deviates a bit and breaks new ground in the Power Rangers mythos and fans will love the new twists and turns that befall the Power Rangers. Even though readers of the Power Rangers series have already seen where these turns end I won’t spoil the bombshell reveal at the end of the book. The artwork of Hendry Prasetya, Thony Silas & Jonathan Lam across the multiple chapters of the story is fantastic and makes the story feel more adult focused as if the creators were speaking directly to the original fans from yesteryear and I loved that as well. It marks a clear distinction between the multitude of Ranger titles geared toward kids and adults.

As this is a collection I have to say this hardcover edition is huge! While it will look gorgeous on your shelf I don’t think anyone will be traveling around with it for casual reading and at $75 I think that even with how well written and illustrated it is it may only appeal to the more hardcore collector while casual readers may be more comfortable with the smaller trade paperbacks. The Year One storyline only takes up about half of the books total pages. However, outside of the main story readers are treated to a few additional Power Ranger stories, including the first chapter of The Adventures of Bulk and Skull, and loads of beautifully rendered artwork. I’d have loved it if Boom! added a pullout so that some of the art could be framed without destroying the book. Maybe, if they read this they’ll consider that for the Year Two Omnibus.

ZORDON’S ORIGINAL TEAM
TO DEBUT IN MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #20!

BOOM! Studios, in partnership with Saban Brands, is proud to reveal the original Power Rangers team in October’s release of MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS #20.

In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #20, writer Kyle Higgins (Nightwing: The New Order) and artist Daniele Di Nicuolo (Mighty Morphin Powers Rangers: Pink) explore an eye-opening new piece of Power Rangers history that will rock the very foundations of the current team to its core. Well before Jason, Zack, Kimberly, Billy, and Trini became Power Rangers, Zordon recruited Rangers in 1969 to battle a foe who was downright… psycho.

“Any opportunity to add to the Power Ranger mythos is always an incredible honor and one of the fundamental reasons I love writing this book,” explained Higgins. “Case in point, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #20 is going to take us back in time to explore a very different—yet familiar—team of Rangers: the ones that stopped a secret Moon attack during the 1960s. Who were the Power Rangers of 1969? What happened to them? And how do they fit into our current story? We’re jumping into the Wayback Machine to the Summer of Love to meet a new cast of Rangers, some of whom will have a huge impact on the future of the Mighty Morphin team!”

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #20 features a main cover by Jamal Campbell (Prowler), along with an interconnecting variant cover by Steve Morris (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), an Action Figure variant cover by Amazon Game Studios VFX artist Joshua McDonald, and a special variant cover by Klaus and Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers superstar artist Dan Mora.

“We’re incredibly excited to show you a part of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers mythos that hasn’t been explored yet, but has definitely helped shape the team as we know it now. With Saban Brands, we have the opportunity to explore this part of the mythos in a new and exciting way, and we can’t wait to show the fans!” said Dafna Pleban, Editor, BOOM! Studios. “If the reveals of Lord Drakkon and the Black Dragon weren’t enough, then strap in—because this is when things get crazy!”

Digital copies can be purchased from content providers including comiXology, Kindle, iTunes, Google Play, and the BOOM!
