“War pt 4”: It’s just not a good day to be a Jedi or anyone allied with them, as Sith Emperor Darth Kryat has declared war on the galaxy. With the revelation of the Jedi Temple’s location, Krayt has launched a vicious attack hoping to wipe out the bulk of his enemies at once. Though, even with the support from Roan Fel’s forces and the Galactic Alliance, things look pretty grim when Krayt unleashes a new type of Sith to destroy them all. There’s also some treachery afoot on both sides of the war, so with only two issues left things should get really interesting soon.
Ostrander has been nothing short of consistent when it comes to delivering quality stories in the Star Wars: Legacy era, and this issue here is no different. Most of it is one intense, action packed battle, but instead of relying on the visuals to carry the weight of the story, Ostrander wraps it in smart dialog and great character moments. It’s also great that this has expanded beyond Cade Skywalker and his issues, but encompasses so many great characters that make up this era. Since the setup early in the series it looks as if things are in full motion now, as the creative team is keeping this thing anything but predictable, though at times the amount of double crosses can become a bit daunting. Though much of it was established during the Star Wars: Legacy series, you’ll want to pay close attention to who is actually working with/for whom.
Do I really need to say again how masterfully Jan Duursema has been drawing this series? Well, if you didn’t know, now you do. Whether she’s showing off the skills of Rogue Squadron in space or a Jedi vs. Sith battle on the ground, your eyes will be entertained from panel to panel. She uses unconventional angles to help give those chaotic space battles that familiar feel from the movies. No bland or boring backgrounds either, as the environments are given just as much detail as the characters that populate the panels. Much of Star Wars: Legacy: War‘s great look is also thanks to Brad Anderson’s colors and Dan Parson’s inks.
Again and again this series continues to impress with its fantastic story and artwork, while maintaining a feel that is classic Star Wars, but keeps its own unique flavor. I would surely suggest this series along with Star Wars: Legacy to anyone who wants something fresh and new out of the Star Wars universe. With only two issues left, it’s going to be interesting to see how things are going to wrap up, but I’m all for something big and unexpected from Ostrander and Duursema!
