Switch #2

Writer: Stjepan Sejic
Artist: Stjepan Sejic
Cover: Stjepan Sejic
Over at Tales From The Water Cooler we took a look at Switch #1 and it blew us away! From start to finish, Stjepan Sejic had put a new spin on the world of Witchblade and it was, dare we say, “perfect’! This alternate reality takes what we already know about the Artifact and breaths some new life into the mythos while staying true to the core of it all. For those of you who have no idea what a Witchblade is or what it does then you’ll be just as entertained because Sejic makes this perfect for readers like yourself.
The second issue picks up with Mary recovering from her battle and attempting to make sense everything. This leads to a visit from a character that Witchblade fans will be very familiar with. As Mary is attempting to sort it all out, the bad guys are planning their next move and they’ll be a little more prepared than last time. So that doesn’t bode well for the new bearer of the Witchblade.
Once again Sejic captures what’s great about teenage characters when they’re not written as over brooding pseudo adults. Mary is an enjoyable protagonist with believable reactions to her new situation. The best is when she’s attempting to console her little brother who saw what happened to her last issue and calls her a “monster”. It’s a kick in the gut to Mary and a sequence that Sejic pulls off with some great dialogue and pacing. What’s even better is when he finally comes and talks to his sister and the reconciliation begins. We also get another satisfying moment between Mary and her best friend, Rudy which results in some comical and lighthearted moments in the story. Sejic’s cast of villains are even more impressive as he’s established that they are quite dangerous and may be more than Mary can handle. Upping the danger factor to a level that’s both tense and exciting so far.
This is also one great looking issue as Sejic takes us from emotional turmoil to supernatural creatures contemplating murder. Over the years, Sejic’s characters seem to have become more expressive and with that it makes for a richer visual experience to help pull what’s needed from the dialogue. As expected, his creature designs are some of THE BEST in comics today and he makes sure that you feel the evil coming off of the pages when they appear
Everything about this issue is just as good as the first so it’s a no brainer that you should be getting this. If by some chance you aren’t, go ahead and add it to your pull list or just preorder it. Switch is the kind of comic fun we complain that we don’t get to see but it’s right here with a great story and stunning visuals for your reading pleasure!
