Welcome to a very special, bonus week of Stay Tooned Sundays. This supplementary edition is not our standard review of a comic book show or movie, but instead, an awesome sneak peak at the upcoming DC Universe Animated movie, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights! This new original movie will be released on DVD and Blu Ray by Warner Home Video on June 7, just ten day before the Green Lantern live action movie hits theaters on June 17.
Fan boys (and girls) will be excited to hear that none other than geek icon Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Castle, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog) will be providing the voice of Hal Jordan. Nathan Fillion has been the top pick by fans to play Hal Jordan so much so that some creative people even made a really great YouTube video for a fake Green Lantern movie trailer featuring Fillion as Jordan. While Ryan Reynolds landed the part in the live action flick, fans at least get to see some version of Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan here. The movie also features Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) as Arisia, Jason Isaacs (the Harry Potter films) as Sinestro, Henry Rollins (Sons of Anarchy) as Kilowog, and former WWF (WWE) star Roddy Piper as Bolphunga the Unrelenting. Fan boys (girls) will also be excited to hear that the movie is written by the likes of Geoff Johns, Dave Gibbons, Peter J. Tomasi, Eddie Berganza, Alan Burnett, Todd Casey, and Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim.
The movie connects six separate stories that come straight out of GL Corps mythology, and all interweave around the return of an ancient enemy. Some highlights of these stories include Hal Jordan recalling to Arisia the stories of Avra, the first Green Lantern. Another of the stories entitled “Mogo Doesn’t Socialize” is based off an Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons story from 1985 about Bolphunga the Unrelenting looking to challenge Mogo, the planet sized GL, in battle as he is the only worthy opponent for Bolphunga. The six stories finally come together as Hal and the other Green Lanterns must stop the GL Corps’ ancient enemy, Krona, from destroying the universe.
If you are planning on seeing Green Lantern when it opens on June 17 (and really, who isn’t?), this movie would be a great way to wet your appetite and brush up on all things GL. Also, with DC Animated guru Bruce Timm as executive producer, you really can’t go wrong. So enjoy these advanced images from the film, pick it up on June 7, and come back to this very column for continuing coverage and possibly a test. (OK, OK, no test!)
