Image Reviews: Saga #6

Saga #6
Publisher: Image
Writer: Brian K. Vaughan
Artist: Fiona Staples
Cover: Fiona Staples

Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples have introduced comic readers to one of the better titles to hit the shelves this year. With this sixth issue, Alana and Marko reach their destination with some pretty exciting twists. The Will finds out the fate of Stalk and becomes Prince Robot IV’s newest enemy. There’s also a bit of a family reunion that leads to one exciting cliff hanger which will make waiting for issue seven that much harder!

What we’ve been experiencing with Saga just gets better with each issue, and this one proves it. The character building has been some of the best from Vaughan, and he makes the reader really root for Marko and Alana. What’s even more interesting is that this story is being told to us by Hazel, and though she drops little hints along the way, it’s very hard to predict what will happen next. Much of the sci-fi and fantasy elements introduced here also feel fresh, and it’s very reassuring when a writer can prove that there are some things in this genre that can be brand new.

Consistently we have seen Fiona Staples bring some of the most exotic alien locales and creatures to life with her artwork. Just like with Vaughan’s script, you really don’t know what you’ll get as you turn the pages. From the designs of the various creatures that populate this story to the tension and drama she’s able to build, Saga is also one of the better looking books on the shelves today.

We won’t get the next issue until November, so in the mean time if you haven’t read Saga or heard how great it is (we’ve reviewed every issue so far on TFTWC), there’s plenty of time to catch up on this first arc. Vaughan and Staples have done not only the sci-fi/fantasy genre proud, but their all around storytelling has just been fantastic.
