Rat Queens #7

The Queens are finally back, and if you thought the poop was perpetually hitting the fan before then you haven’t seen anything yet! Hannah is at the wrong place at the worst possible time. Sawyer has been captured. Dee is dealing with her husband’s visit, which is uncomfortable for her in the first place, but it’s the news he brings that is far worse than unresolved emotional baggage.
There is a noticeable shift in tone with this particular arc Wiebe is laying out, and it’s a welcome one. It seems as if a bit of the crazy is settling down, and we’re getting a bit of character development. Wiebe uses the dialogue between Dee and her husband to give us a peek into who she is, from what the markings on her face mean to her unresolved issues with her own family. It’s a welcome sequence of events that just gives us an even richer and more enjoyable character in Dee. Though it’s not all serious talks and words of doom, as with any Rat Queens issue you’ll get a nice mix of humor, violence, and Betty doing what Betty does! Wiebe also introduces a villain into the mix that isn’t a group of angry trolls just coming to slaughter the innocent. This man has a vendetta against Sawyer and has done things to make sure he succeeds in destroying him.
Roc continues to excel issue after issue with his visual storytelling skills. There is just too much in this issue that is just great, especially when you break down Lola’s fight against seven men and just how visceral he makes it look. The actual fight choreography flows quite well and hits the right beats with the action, and once again he draws a standout sequence involving Betty and Violet that will have you cracking up.
If you have been reading Rat Queens from the start then picking this up is really a no brainer. If you have yet to experience this title I’d recommend maybe going back and picking up the past issues. Though you’ll get the gist of what’s going on here if you just jump in, you’ll enjoy it more with some background. There’s a reason this title has been gaining popularity, so find out why!
Till next time!
