Today, we’ll be looking at the first two chapters of the graphic novel reMIND. reMIND is still a work-in-progress in the sense that it hasn’t been published yet. Our friend Jason Brubaker, the mastermind behind this project, is working diligently to raise funds to have his work become reality. However, the first two chapters are available here on his website for all to enjoy, and enjoy is exactly what I did!

The first two chapters begin the tale of Victuals the cat, his owner Sonja, and his mother, Lizzlie, the rat. Now if you’re thinking this is a story about how a rat adopted a cat and found a happy home with some human, then you are mistaken. This is the story of a cat who has the brain of a lizard man implanted in his body, his mother who has the same procedure done except with a rat, their exile from the underwater kingdom of lizard people, and a human who is actually taking all of this pretty well, considering. Not what you were expecting, right? And all of this in just the first two chapters!

In beginning chapter one, my eyes where immediately drawn to the artwork. Jason’s style is very unique. It’s not something you see much in mainstream comics, but that’s a good thing as it fits perfectly with the story. Jason has a knack for capturing emotion, not only in his human characters, but the animals as well. In the first few pages we see the cat, Victuals, making his way through the brush to the bubbling ocean. Jason drew Victuals perfectly to convey his untrusting and cautious attitude toward the bubbles, not only in his movements, but in his facial expressions. This is seen throughout both chapters, where later we see it done with lizard people and even a giant crab, which you can definitely tell is pissed off.

Aside from being a talented artist, Jason is also a talented writer. The story is very well told. Especially in chapter two when Jason is telling the story of Victuals as a lizard man in Alizarin Crimson, home of the lizard people, and how/why he was exiled. I don’t want to give anything away, but it has to do with religion and worshiping false idols. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this aspect of the story progresses.

These two chapters are a fascinating and entertaining read, and I encourage you to check them out. I’d love to see this story come to its conclusion! Jason has been given a grant of $5,000 from the Xeric Foundation to help him get reMIND published.
