Good news for fans who want to hear stories from diverse voices as it was announced in an exclusive from Deadline that Legendary won the rights to the classic Prince of Cats. The graphic novel by Ron Wimberly (Black History In Its Own Words) which first was released on the DC/Vertigo imprint and then later from Image Comics. For those keeping count that’s yet another DC/Vertigo property getting the live action treatment after Y the Last Man and The Kitchen.
Prince of Cats is Wimberly’s unique vision and twist on Shakespear’s Romeo & Juliet that focuses on Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt aka the “Prince of Cats”. It’s an alternate take on a classic tale that finds itself wrapped in the 80s as the Capulets and Montagues swing swords in the streets of Brooklyn.
The adaptation will star Lakeith Stanfield (Atlanta, Sorry To Bother You) and Selwyn Seyfu Hinds will be the one adapting Prince of Cats for the big screen. If you’re unfamiliar with Hinds then do yourself a favor and commit to a quick search because the man is a legend. More importantly though, if you haven’t read Prince of Cats I suggest you remedy that soon. Either try to find a copy out in the wild or just ask a friend to read theirs but do yourself a favor and read it!
