Hello and welcome to another week in Marvel Snapshot! This week’s spotlight will be on a character who’s about to get the big screen treatment in the new Thor movie this November. Malekith the Accursed will be the character, and rather than keep droning on, let’s get right to it! He was created by Walt Simonson in 1984 (Thor #344).
The Dark Elves that inhabit the realm of Svartalfheim are led by the evil Malekith. He’s a sworn enemy of Asgard, and has been a thorn in their side for a long time. He first came on he scene with a plot to kill Thor, and steal the Casket of Ancient Winters. He made a bargain with Loki and Surtur to steal the casket and kill the Asgardians, and anyone else that happened to get in his way.
He eventually did kill the guardian of the casket, and unleashed its power on the Earth. For that crime, he was brought before Odin, and then placed in the dungeon. He once again partnered with Loki to escape Asgard. He then captured Lorelei. He forced Thor to do battle with Algrim the Strong (Kurse), and then betrayed them by sending them plummeting into hot magma. Both men lived, though, and Kurse later took revenge by seemingly breaking Malekith’s neck.
Malekith survived the brutal event, and went on to plague not only Thor, but also disguised himself as Balder (for the second time), and tricked Hercules into going after the Dark Elf Queen. Thor arrived on the scene, though, and set things straight. He was then banished by Zeus. There’s a rumor that he’ll be the next villain in Thor’s newest ongoing title.
As usual, check out my recommended reading list, along with some of his appearances! Enjoy, and see you next time!
