Marvel Snapshot: Character Spotlight: Frankenstein

Hey everyone, welcome to another great character spotlight right here in Marvel Snapshot. In this week’s edition, we’ll be focusing once again on Marvel Horror with Frankenstein’s Monster! Yes, the dude that is basically a giant meatball with legs is going to be the focus this week, so get ready.

Alright, everybody should know the Frankenstein origin story, right? Well, if you don’t, here’s a brief synopsis. A doctor named Victor Frankenstein was a medical student and was fascinated with the possibility of re-animating a dead person. So, he did what every person would do. He and an assistant went into graveyards and dug up some corpses for spare parts (cool, huh). After putting the pieces together, he then used his scientific brilliance to construct some devices to bring the creature to life. After the creature was brought to life, it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, so Victor tried to pull the plug. Well, the monster went nuts and went on a rampage, and thus began the story of the most misunderstood monster in history.

The character of Frankenstein’s Monster has been used by many companies over the years, but Marvel’s 70s title, along with numerous appearances in other titles, spawned the best version by far. The horror scene was spectacular, with Werewolf by Night, Tomb of Dracula, and a host of others. These titles alone pulled characters like Frankenstein’s Monster out of relative obscurity, and with people like Gary Friedrich, Mike Ploog, and Doug Moench, it was a can’t miss with hardcore fans. Spider-Man, Silver Surfer, The X-Men, The Avengers, the list goes on forever of people that have had to face the Monster! My personal favorites are the crossovers with Dracula (big surprise). I must also tell you that the one-shot with the Hulk in Monster Sized Special (2008) was fantastic. I’m not even a big Hulk fan, but I thought it was nicely done. Check below for my recommended reading list and I’ll see you back here next week!

I think I actually have that Giant Size Werewolf in one of my long boxes. I was more of a Werewolf fan back then. I never knew there a Hulk vs Frankenstein comic which is actually kind of cool if you consider the similar parallels between the two characters and how they are percieved by the outside world.
