Iron Fist: The Living Weapon #8
Publisher: Marvel
Writer: Kaare Andrews
Artist: Kaare Andrews
Cover: Kaare Andrews
Danny has come a long way since the first issue, but it’s still an uphill battle as he’s fighting to be reunited with his mother. His journey in Diyu, The Realm of the Dead, is where this search will begin, and Kaare Andrews isn’t going to make this easy for him by any means.
The systematic breaking down of Iron Fist has been some of the best storytelling surrounding the character since the Immortal Iron Fist series years ago. This issue finds Andrews using the story of Buddha to parallel Danny’s journey as he realizes his real purpose for being in Diyu. It’s an interesting tale of self discovery that has some unexpected twists that will make you like the character even more if you’re already a fan. Now, if this series is your first introduction to Iron Fist, then hopefully you’re hooked by now.
Andrews also tells just as good of a visual story as he does through the dialogue. He has a firm grasp on martial arts fight choreography, and then turns it on its head for an even better action sequence! Just when you think you’re getting the usual flurry of fists and kicks, Iron Fist is fighting giant demons, catching swords with his feet, and just being the martial arts beast that he is. Then, just as quickly, Andrews dials it back and brings you to an emotional encounter between mother and son. I won’t spoil anything for you, but the last page is pure kung fu greatness! One can only hope that this is Danny’s new look which will be used from now on. I’m sure most would agree it’s time for an updated costume anyway. Andrews has also produced yet another mind blowing cover for this series on top of everything else!
Kaare Andrews deserves all of the praise he gets for Iron Fist: The Living Weapon, and it is assuredly one of the top titles coming from Marvel. It’s like nothing that has come before involving this character, and that’s the most refreshing part of all. So make sure you give this title a try if it’s not already a part of your regular reading pile of comics!
