After what seemed like forever, Farmhand is back and in this issue the past returns to hit Jedidiah right in the face. So far Guillory has been hinting at past actions having severe repercussions on the present but we see that those were just softening him up for the knock out blow that was coming.
Guillory kicks this issue off with the major players at a crawfish boil before Jedidiah’s miracle seed took root in the town. This entire sequence is an eye opening moment with brilliant foreshadowing and shows off just how well Guillory has been setting up this entire story. Not only tying moments together but showing how far the characters have come in their ideologies and how some were correct to be suspicious of the entire thing form the beginning.
When he has Jedidiah seek help from Auntie Janice, a woman gifted with The Sight, she takes us back even further revealing that Jedidiah’s struggle began before he was born. Highlighting the horrors of his ancestor’s life and his inability to overcome those issues in his own life. This is where Guillory makes the infection both something tangible and a metaphor but still dangerous nonetheless.
Guillory’s art is still some of the best out there and continues to be a highlight of this story. There’s moments when his visual storytelling is so on point that we could have done without the dialogue with some sequences. Wells’ colors bring out the necessary visual elements and really helps hit those emotional beats with the art. The subtle color changes with eyes of the infected and raised green vines/veins are ominous until they need to be in your face during an action sequence. There’s one particular flashback with a sepia-like tone that I’ve always liked more than using just black and white. These enhance a particular scene of Guillory’s and you can feel the rage coming off of these men because of their loss.
Farmhand continues to be a layered thriller with unpredictable twists that should be on your pull list!
