Original Sin #6

Okay, we’re back to action goodness after the boring interlude break in the last issue. Everybody is (no pun intended, I promise) assembled and means business. This issue is frustrating, however. Every time we think the answer will be given, somebody screams or something is blown up, and attention is directed elsewhere. Also, Nick Fury actual, the real one that’s getting really old, is all dressed up like a really old looking Cable and about to shoot something. I am pretty sure we all need to hold on tight, because the last two issues are going to be full blast!
With the story from Jason Aaron and art from Mike Deodato, still going strong, these two are doing an event right. See how much better it goes when the writer and artist aren’t different each issue? Well done, Marvel. Now…tell us who shot him! – AF

Dr. Midas seems to be making another big move, Nick Fury is on borrowed time (again), and the Avengers assemble! With Original Sin winding down, Aaron keeps things from getting stale, and makes it one of the stronger events to come out of Marvel in a while. The issue is at its strongest during the Fury sequences, because Aaron has set up such a great mystery here and keeps you wanting to turn those pages to get more! What’s frustrating is that out of what is revealed in this issue, it really isn’t what you want to know and you end up like T’Challa asking Fury over and over again who it was that pulled the trigger. We do get a little bit of action here and a ticked off Captain America, but it’s the motives of Dr. Midas that are what’s really intriguing here…and why does he look like Thing, but blueish?
Deodato is still making sure that you’re getting your money’s worth as far as the visual look is concerned. There’s a lot of detail in his grizzled and aged Nick Fury that is just great to look at. He also handles the large cast of characters just as well in these later issues as he did when things started. One writer and one artist on an event title is the way to go! – IM

Hulk vs. Iron Man #2

Out of all of the secrets that have been revealed since the big eye explosion in Original Sin #2, the events here seem to have the most impact. It’s not just that Tony may have had a hand in creating Hulk, but that he was given instructions to tamper with the gamma bomb. The problem is that Tony honestly forgot about these events because it happened during his heavy drinking period. So it’s not that far of a stretch as to why none of this has ever come up before, which posed an issue for several fans. However, once you start reading it for yourself and see how natural the events are laid out by Gillen and Waid, you’ll get the picture.
Ross provides a good looking issue that also makes a better visual impact than most of the other tie-ins. Especially that last page with a modified Hulk about to go and have “words” with Stark.
Out of all the tie-ins to Original Sin, this seems to have the strongest connection to the core title. This actually seems as if there will be an impact and some serious fall out, unlike several of the other books that are carrying the Original Sin banner. – IM

Uh oh! Oh, boy! Banner has rigged the extremis in his body to keep his intelligence when he Hulks out? A smart, angry Hulk that knows what Tony did? A Tony that knows what he did and hopes Banner doesn’t know, too? I think there is actual poop in Tony’s armor. Does that thing have a proper evacuation system, or does he have to fly around with poop?
Not only is Hulk vs. Iron Man history changing, but it is probably the best secret (that we know of, as of right now) that has come out of the eye bomb explosion over in Original Sin. That makes this series a seamless tie-in to Original Sin, but it also seamlessly ties into the ongoing Hulk book.
The ONLY problem I have with this story is that it stated the Gamma Bomb accident happened only thirteen years ago. That just doesn’t make sense, but that is another disscussion for another outlet. – AF

Nova #19

Sam goes looking for answers about his dad. Rocket Raccoon goes, too, because the guy they are going to visit, Adomox, owes him money.
This issue was fun and all, but something Adomox has in his possession has all of my attention. He’s got a Nova Corp helmet. Not just any Nova Corp helmet; he’s got the Nova Prime’s helmet. The Nova Prime was Richard Rider. Remember when Thanos, Star-Lord, and Rider were standing back-to-back-to-back, prepared to fight, come what may, because they were trapped in the Cancerverse forever? Yes, the same Thanos and Star-Lord that are very alive and well and running around doing stuff for the last two years or so! WHERE IS RICHARD RIDER?!
Oh, right. Where was I? This issue of Nova was solid. One of my favorite Marvel books right now. I can’t wait to see how Sam and Rocket get out of this mess! – AF

Uncanny X-Men #23

The newest edition to the Original Sin tie-ins is here, and I am not quite sure what it has to do with Original Sin. It did, however, throw back to a previous event that was far inferior to this one, with the multiple writers and multiple artists like I mentioned earlier in this week’s installment of this little collaboration I have with Infinite Man. That event was AvX, in which Charles Xavier was killed, which leads to the cover of this issue: “The Last Will and Testament of Charles Xavier.” She-Hulk knows the secrets of its pages, but we have to wait for that idiot-jerk Cyclops to be present. Yet another issue that won’t give us answers this week. How long will we have to wait for his sorry butt to show up? I wanna know the secrets! Secrets like what’s this gotta do with Original Sin? And who is that nervous Matt guy that got all explody when he wigged out? -AF

The cover pretty much tells you all you need to know about the most important part of this issue. However, why it needs to be included in Original Sin is still unclear. The death of Xavier is significant enough to stand on its own, and is still sending ripples through the X-titles, for good reason. Though it’s the fact that his death came at the hands of the man he called “son,” Cyclops, that has an impact on this issue since we are forced to wait for him to show up before anything can be read.
When this issue deals with Dazzler’s fallout and what happened with Eva in the previous issues is when the story is at its strongest. These are the plot elements that matter, and help move things along pretty smoothly until we get to the tie-in portion of the issue. Bendis is able to plant the seeds here, but with something as important as Xavier’s Will being read it didn’t seem like enough.
If you were reading this title on a regular basis, then by all means pick it up and enjoy it for what Bendis had already set up in previous issues. If you are looking to pick this up as just a tie-in, then it’s passable. – IM
