Journey Into Mystery #623

After a very brief look at what’s going on in Asgard since Odin’s decree of war against Midgard (Earth), we’re treated to a tale from Thor and Loki’s childhood by Volstagg. Thankfully this also ties into what is currently going on, and Gillen does a great job at bringing it all together. The struggles of young Loki to distance himself from the acts of his former elder self are played out very well throughout the issue. From an assassination attempt on Loki’s life to his own internal conflicts about how to save Asgard. Especially when he seeks Thor’s advice to get a better scope of what he must do. Thor even reminds him that no good man will follow his plan, so Loki states that he’ll have to make due with a few bad ones. With this story we are treated to Braithwaite’s great looking artwork to carry us along from beginning to end. The sequence where Loki climbs out of the pit and Ikol basically tells him to “man up” is one of the best looking parts of the book.

This is one of the stronger titles linked to Fear Itself as this story seems like it will tie in a bit closer than the rest. I’m also pretty sure if it were just the core book and this series, Fear Itself would be just as strong of an event. You would be far from disappointed in picking up Journey Into Mystery to add to your collection as far as I’m concerned, because so far Gillen and Braithewaite are making this series well worth the time and money! 4/5 – IS

Fear Itself: Youth In Revolt #1

“Youth in Revolt, Part One”: Ritchie Gilmore, A.K.A. Prodigy, is now a government pencil pusher. Decommissioning Super Human Registration Act files, he lives an exciting life. That is, until Lt. General Charlie Stokes pays him a visit with a hologram message from Commander Steve Rogers. The Avengers are spread thin, dealing with all the different hammer sightings. Rogers wants Ritchie to put the cape back on and head up a new Initiative, made entirely of volunteers, to run crowd chaos control. Will that be an easy task since the old Initiative program left so many feeling burned from the fallout?

Putting together a team with the likes of Thor Girl, Gravity, Cloud 9, Komodo, Firestar, and others, it’s a who’s who of characters from previous books that nobody really cared about. When you place them in a crowd of people scared and frantic over people with hammers, and Thor Girl has a hammer…well, let’s just say it gets REALLY ugly, REALLY quick.

Considering this book has great comic book art and Prodigy and Firestar have a special place in my heart (“Slingers,” “Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends”), I’m on board for this one. With a cliffhanger ending to boot, I think it will be lots of fun! 4/5 – AW
