Thor & Loki: The Tenth Realm #4

Loki isn’t the trickster god because he tells knock-knock jokes. He, wait, SHE is quite the master of deception, and she pulls off another scheme quite beautifully. Meanwhile, Thor is about to show the angels what happens when you torture the god of thunder. All-out war is about to come down upon Heaven, and daddy is coming home! I believe this battle needs to have more than just the remaining issue, because Thor also needs to know who his sister is, but I have supreme faith that Al Ewing will wrap this up wonderfully with a pretty bow. This ORIGINAL SIN tie-in started off pretty slowly, but I think the conclusion will be an epic explosion! – AF

Avengers #34

Hickman has been steadily building the tension in Avengers, and now things are coming full circle as Captain America reaches the end of his journey through time. However, it’s his foes who will tell him the truth, and he’s not going to like it. It seems as if there is something horrible coming, and the only way to avoid this event is to keep Cap right where he is in the future. Cap doesn’t seem to agree with the idea, and decides to do what he does best when going up against the bad guys.
If you’ve been following this title, then this issue is a huge payoff. If not, then you’re probably scratching your head right now. One thing that sticks out in this issue is the question of whether or not Cap did the right thing. Hickman has no problem displaying the nobility of Cap and all of those qualities that make him a larger than life icon. But he also shows how all of that may not be what we need right now to save things. Sometimes the bad guys can be right even if their motives are a bit questionable. Though it’s the cliffhanger that Hickman gives us that is the true standout in the entire issue. This is what we’ve been waiting for ever since the Illuminati was formed. Yu’s artwork also continues to hold up and impress page after page.
As a tie-in it still seems like it veered off the path of Original Sin once Steve realized the truth behind his mind wipe. Though as an Avengers issue it still holds up as one of the best. – IM

Guardians of the Galaxy #18

I don’t know about y’all, but I have been waiting for this story for four years now. It’s finally here. Since Drax died and Star-Lord, Nova (Richard Rider), and Thanos were trapped, seemingly forever, in the Cancerverse at the end of THANOS IMPERATIVE, the question of how these individuals returned (and Drax, alive), and the whereabouts of Richard Rider, has gone unanswered or avoided.
That four year wait is over. So Star-Lord can’t avoid the question any longer (or get interrupted by explosions, like in AVENGERS ASSEMBLE), Gamora ties Quill up, and who wouldn’t want to be tied up by Gamora?! She asks THE question, point blank. As Star-Lord tells the exciting tale of how he and Nova were going to shove the Cosmic Cube up Thanos’s ass, we get three wretched words from Marvel: “To Be Continued.”
GAAAAAH! I know it is typical in comics, but I really wanted to keep turning the pages. Bendis had me on the edge of my seat, and McGuinness’s art was just really fun for these characters. The thing that was missing from this story, as it carried the ORIGINAL SIN banner, was how it related to the eye-bomb explosion. But, you know what? I really didn’t care! I want this story very badly. I will gladly return next month, but since this story is long overdue, it isn’t really a good jump-on point for brand new readers not familiar with what went down in the DnA days of the Guardians of the Galaxy. – AF
