Dark Spaces: Dungeon sees the return of Scott Snyder and Hayden Sherman as they deliver a suspenseful tale focusing on a serial killer with torturous methods and the man out to stop him.
Sherman and Delpeche pull you into this dark and twisted world with an opening sequence that is just visceral. The child escaping from their prison is an intense visual as you take in his appearance in each panel. From the gnarled and disfigured arm to his finger and toenails you can see the passage of time has been long and painful. From that visual gut punch, you’re transported 21 years later to a warm home and loving family. This is where Snyder makes things a bit more comfortable for us as we get to know them. However, as much as you want them to be okay you already know Snyder is about to ruin their entire world. He does this by introducing a serial killer that uses a very specific calling card and whose methods are intricately brutal.
The pacing here is phenomenal, and I love how he introduces Agent Hadoc to the reader. Again, it’s another spectacular sequence where Sherman demonstrates their mastery of the page. They keep things tight and hit the beats so well that the visual payoff is perfect. Snyder also shows not only how smart Hadoc is but that he’s a driven man. Now, these may seem like familiar traits but when written as they are here, you’ll want to get to know more about these characters. Snyder also reveals a twisted connection here that is sure to firmly cement this story’s hooks right into you. And by the time you reach the cliffhanger of this issue there’s no way you’ll not want to grab the next one!
First issues should leave you wanting more, and this creative team delivers on that 100%! From the narrative to the art this is a series worth your money and time. So, if you’re into suspense, thrillers, and serial killers then Dark Spaces: Dungeons is for you!
