Racking up a host of awards so far, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse seems to be lock for academy award this year. For those who have been living under a rock. Sony’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse tells the story of Miles Morales. Miles was introduced in Marvel comics in 2011 in an alternate universe where Peter Parker/Spider-Man, died and Miles became a new Spider-Man after he was also similarly bitten by a altered spider. This movie tells his story.
I’ve seen plenty of other great animated films this year but nothing has matched what Sony did with this one. From the animation style, the tight plot, to representation of a character that is outside of the standard white Cis-male hero quest Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse manages to delicately balance story, reverence, acclaim and maintain the feel of the source material like no other “Superhero film” in 2018. Going back to a print medium Titan Comics has put out a glorious 96 page collectors guide for the film.
Page after page shows off the stills from the film to illustrate scenes and convey visual information that really put a spotlight on the film’s unique design. These images easily translate to the page and reestablishes a comic book feel that the film emulates. The book also covers all the major players in the film with detailed breakdowns and shares the film makers thoughts throughout. Behind the scenes information here is really telling in how the film came together. Aside from the directors (Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, & Bob Persichetti) and animation staff, the book gets some input from Shameik Moore as he is the first to portray Miles on the big screen.
I would of liked to see more concept images of the world the characters live in. Each of the Spider-people who are in the film have their own world as the city is a huge part of making them their particular world’s Spider-hero. I just wish the world Miles lives in got more of the layers peeled back for this book. However, for the amount of pages of content and price point, $19.99, for this hardcover book it is a great addition for any fan of the film and Spider-Man enthusiast in general to make a part of their collection.
The Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse: The Official Movie Special is out in stores now so pick it up at your local comic shops and books stores.
