In this self-contained issue of Usagi Yojimbo, the rabbit samurai has been traveling during the day, and seeking shelter and a meal with anyone kind enough to have him in the evening. A nice, older woman takes him in, but he cannot get any rest as this woman is a little bit on the loony side and won’t shut up! The next day, he is finally able to pry himself away from his crazy hostess long enough to bail and continue on his journey.
As the sun is starting to set, Usagi-san finds shelter in a peasant’s hut. The peasant, while glad to have some company, is far too tired and goes to bed after supper. Finally! Some peace and quiet! Time to get his snore on! Just when he starts to get some samurai shut-eye, he is awakened by a nightmarish visitor!
The book is written and drawn by Usagi Yojimbo creator, Stan Sakai. The art is a simple, cartoonish style in black and white. Sakai’s writing reminds me a little bit of Stan Lee’s writing, as the characters sometimes state what is already visually obvious. Don’t get me wrong, though; it’s not really that annoying here. It fits the vibe. I can’t speak on the entire series, but this particular issue of Usagi Yojimbo is very much a goofy, cartoon humor book with some sweet sword action tossed in there!
Other than when Usagi ran around with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in a couple of episodes of their original animated series, I have no knowledge of Usagi Yojimbo. Because this is a self-contained issue, I jumped at the chance to broaden my comic book horizon. I’m glad I did; I’m going to add it to my pull list, for sure! You should give this bunny rabbit a try. It’s definitely a fun, goofy escape from reality. Besides…wouldn’t you like to know how Usagi handles his nightmarish visitor? It’s worth it, my friends!

Usagi Yojimbo remembers me of a cross Raving Rabbids and Kenshin (Samurai X). I Love it 🙂
I’m in your boat Aron: the only Usagi I know of is the one from the TMNT cartoons. Glad to hear he’s still cool.
@ 3Moopydelfy – That’s a pretty good comparison. I must admit, I had to Google the Raving Rabbids and Kenshin because I had never heard of them, but you are right.
@ Andy – Yeah, he is pretty cool. I can’t wait until next month’s issue. I must know more!
Sounds like a fun read!
Until I read this I had no idea that usagi was still in the comic books. Of course if I was still buying comic books I would know. I will again……someday. Hopfully.
It is a fun read! Not what I was expecting at all. I can’t believe I always passed it up thinking, “oh, it’s just that rabbit from TMNT”.
