Have you ever read a comic book thinking you knew what it was about, only to be totally shocked from the next issue? Yep, that’s what will happen from issue number one to the second issue in this mini-series, guaranteed. An innocent war story about a WWII band of soldiers who won’t quit, turned into a story that can only be told by Mike Mignola & John Arcudi. These two writers have been killing it on BPRD, and if you haven’t been reading that, shame on you. This military book turned supernatural thriller will grab you and bring you into a world that you didn’t see coming. A book that was a can’t miss with this creative team just from the solicits and then shocks the readers with a surprise? It does sound to good to believe, but Dark Horse has done it!
This two issue mini was absolutely incredible. The depth of characters that was presented in just two issues was amazing. Mignola and Arcudi somehow made you care about two especially, and again, how they pulled this off in a couple of issues is a testament to how great they really are. The story connecting to the BPRD at the end was an added bonus, too. Another one of those “I didn’t see that coming” moments that really was the icing on the top of the cake.
Jason Latour is quickly becoming one of my favorite new artists. His work on Winter Soldier is great, and this book really showed what he can do in a different time period and setting (below). His work is so steady and reliable that you can’t even notice any flaws or rushed panels. Dark Horse stalwart Dave Stewart rounds out the team, and anyone that’s been reading Dark Horse for any extended period of time knows how essential his colors are to the overall tone and mood of a book. The covers for both issues were done by Mignola and Stewart, and were the type that make the book jump off of the shelf and into a reader’s hands. This story is a must read! Rating 5/5
