Kull the Hate Witch #4

Until this point in the story, Kull is unaware that his lifelong friend, Am-Ra, is under the influence of the witch Heka-La. Kish and Meelah know of Am-Ra’s imminent betrayal, and are trying to reach Kull to warn him. Kull and Am-Ra have reached the ruins where the witch lives, though, and Kull immediately calls out the old hag and tells her that he will have her head. Am-Ra then suggests that Kull shouldn’t be so brash, and then tells Kull that the witch spoke of a great cataclysm to be wary of. Kull brushes the advice aside, and when Am-Ra then tries to persuade Kull to take his legions and go to war with the world, Kull seems to ponder this. While he does, the witch takes form, and takes the fight to Kull. She slashes his breast and blood spills from the gaping wound. Kull then retaliates with his mighty sword and cuts the witch. As the two do battle, Am-Ra slowly pulls a dagger from his coat. As he stands poised to betray his friend, Kish calls out to Kull, and throws a spear that pierces Am-Ra’s shoulder, and Am-Ra drops the dagger and falls to the ground in pain. I won’t go any further, but suffice it to say that this is a battle for the ages, and Guzman’s artwork does it justice times ten! This was a great mini-series and more than worth the asking price, so definitely give it a shot!
King Conan: The Scarlet Citadel #1

The story starts out with King Conan sitting on his throne, surrounded by food, drink, and women. He is soon approached by a scribe that tells him it is time to start writing down his adventures, and rise to King of Aquilonia. The scribe says that he would like to hear about his battle with the wizard Tsotha, and Conan orders him to get a drink and pull up a chair, because he’ll tell him a tale he wont soon forget. He tells the scribe of an instance where a trap was laid and he fell right into it. He fought valiantly, but alone against hundreds, the odds were not good. Conan was still prepared to fight to the death, but then a wizard said to take him alive, for it would be more profitable. Conan lunged at the wizard, but was pierced with a poison tipped ring, and the lion known as Conan was subdued. He was then shackled and brought before King Amalrus to beg for mercy. Conan spat in the face of the King, and then was dragged to the bowels of the palace, where a fate worse than death on the battlefield surely awaited. This was a great start to this series, typical of this type of book, but great nonetheless. I’m really enjoying these sword and sorcery books that Dark Horse is churning out right now, and hopefully there isn’t an end in sight!
