Colder #5
Publisher: Dark Horse
Writer: Paul Tobin
Artist: Juan Ferreyra
Colors: Eduardo Ferreyra & Laura Binaghi
The mind of Nimble Jack isn’t a pretty place, but slowly and surely Declan is figuring him out. That doesn’t bode well for Jack, because his advantage was built on fear and knowledge, and now Declan isn’t afraid and he knows Jack’s secret! Will this be enough to defeat Jack and save Reece? Will Declan’s mind be able to survive Jack’s assault on his will? This issue brings all these answers and then some!
OK, now that we’ve gotten to the end of this insane mini-series, one thing’s for sure. The mind of Paul Tobin is a very scary place, that no one wants to visit anytime soon. The overall acid-trip tone of this book was awesome, and honestly is quite unique. One other book comes to mind that vaguely reminds me of it, and that is Spider-Man: Fever, by Brendan McCarthy, though that’s more of an artistic similarity than anything. The story was definitely a roller-coaster of madness, for sure. All the while, it never lost its solid pacing, or strong roots to the story itself. The last page was quite interesting as well, and should really leave the reader thinking.
The discovery (on my part) of Juan Ferreyra’s masterful artwork has been awesome. He really has his very own style that is brought to even bigger heights by the colorists. The pencils are sharp, and the colors pop right off of the page. The contrast between the real world and the alternate dimension is one of the best parts, no doubt about it. There’s the dark and grey tones of the insane world, and then the stark contrast of bright colors in the real world. Very nice touch with that angle. And the covers, what’s to be said of them except kudos to the artistic team. One after another, each one had something about it that was utterly fantastic. Truthfully, issues one and five stuck out slightly more than the other three, but again, all were out of this world!
Definitely buy the singles or the trade, because you’ll be doing yourself a favor. There is nothing like this on the shelves right now, and there hasn’t been for a while. Will there be in the near future? Only time will tell. Rating 5/5

Thanks for the review Billy! Paul’s story was great to draw!! and we had a wonderful time doing it.
one thing, I do all the coloring myself, Eduardo nd Laura help me out with the flats, but I choose the colors and do the rendering of dahows and lightning! (and they are my dad and wife! :))
If it wasn’t for that cover on the first issue and Decapitated Dan picking this for us to review on Tales From the Water Cooler I don’t think I would have given this a look. But I’m so glad I did and I’m hoping when it’s all collected and released it’s a hardcover (fingers crossed)!
This series was hardcore awesome!
This series started out good and creep. Books one and two were awesome, then the bottom fell out. Overall this series sucked. Great art, horrible story, incomplete ending.
