The stage is set, Reece and Declan, and Nimble Jack. A nurse, an 80-year-old asylum inmate that looks like a 30-year-old frozen popsicle, and some sort of other-worldly being that resembles a man. Quite a cast of characters, eh? Reece and Declan are having a nice stroll through the park while she’s grilling him about who he really is, and what he’s all about. He’s mildly evasive in the beginning, but then decides to show her another world that exists right outside or even parallel to ours. She basically craps her pants, and he brings them back to reality to explain things. She has a difficult time fathoming it all, and then, Nimble Jack makes some poor agoraphobic commit suicide by leaping off of a tall building in a single bound.
Most series these days lose a little bit of momentum in the second issue (especially ongoing series), but this one kept the pace nicely. There was a lot of conversation and it was needed, but Tobin also provided action a couple of different times, and it was what made the issue have perfect balance. The panels with Nimble Jack are absolutely outrageous! He’s like the peanut butter inside the chocolate of a peanut butter cup. Just when you think things are getting slow with dialog, he shows up and everything gets insane!
Juan Ferreyra was an unknown quantity for most as the artist on this issue, but wow, can he put on a show. He has scenes that are dark and dreary, then scenes with a lot of vibrancy, and they all look great. He does a solid job with the characters especially. Nimble Jack is so creepy, but Reece and Declan look good, too. Even bystanders on the street have detail and add to the scenery. Nothing in this issue seemed even slightly off kilter. The cover was pretty cool, too, but not quite as impressive as the cover to the first issue. What else can be said other than get out and buy this series from Dark Horse Comics! Rating 4.5/5
