Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 6/17/15

ArchvsPredArchie vs Predator #3 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech: So many cool nods to the Predator mythos and even a giant killer robot shows up to help in another fun issue!

Astro City #24 (Vertigo)
Martin: 4/5 stars. It takes talent to “humanize” a talking gorilla and make him sympathetic and relatable. Busiek does just that.

Black Canary #1 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. High scores for trying some new & different. Good intro issue to the character, with fun artwork by Wu.

Bloodshot Reborn #3 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: This is one of the best new titles out right now and Bloodsquirt is a show stealer!

Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: It’s Deadpool being Deadpool but without the disfigurement. Best part was the nod to the 80s Secret Wars action figures.

Deathlok #9 (Marvel).
Infinite Speech: Enjoyed it up until that unsettling last panel. Did Biotek only experiment on Black guys to make Deathloks?

Doctor Fate #1 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Another strong entry from DC’s semi-relaunch. Fun story, unique artwork, Egyptian mysticism…what’s not to like?
Infinite Speech: Where was this title MONTHS ago?!

Empty Zone #1 (Image)
Infinite Speech:
The dream sequence still creeps me out but Empty Zone is horror and sci-fi all rolled into a tense and exciting experience!

Ghostbusters: Get Real #1 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: Comic Ghostbusters meet The Real Ghostbusters in some dimension hopping ghost busting that any fan should pick up!

Ivar, Timewalker #6 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech:  Six issues in and the laughs just keep coming as Van Lente and Portela deliver another fantastic Valiant title!

Justice League of America #1 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The 2nd JLA book in the past couple of years. This one is non-continuity, & it’s better for that.
Infinite Speech: This had a bit of a classic feel to it that made me remember how good the JLA books used to be.

Lazarus #17 (Image)
JLAMartin: 4/5 stars. An engaging look at both life on the front lines of a war, as well as some quieter “behind the scenes” moments.

Mad Max: Fury Road: Furiosa #1 (Vertigo)
Infinite Speech: Maybe a story about Furiosa’s past wasn’t the way to go and maybe it could have been more about Furiosa herself. Still conflicted on this one.

Martian Manhunter #1 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Nice to see J’onn get his own title again. Lots going on this issue, all framed with a sci-fi/horror theme.

Old Man Logan #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Worlds collide in a strong tie-in to Secret Wars and Apocalypse shows up to really put a damper on the day!

Robin Son of Batman #1 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. There’s a lot to like in this but it’s not really “new reader friendly”, hence the slightly lower score.
Infinite Speech: I had fun because I’m a huge fan of Damian but for a first issue it’s not an easy access point for new readers.

Runaways #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The fun I was supposed to have in the Deadpool book was waiting for me here.

RunLoveKill #3 (Image)
Infinite Speech:
Tsuei and Canete continue to create an intense sci-fi story backed with some fantastic art!

Superman/Wonder Woman #18 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Reading the “Truth” storyline out-of-order gets confusing. Characterizations of Supes & WW seem “off”

Southern Bastards #9 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Aaron and Latour just keep putting out issue after issue of a great story here in Southern Bastards!

Squadron Sinister #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The fallen Justice League members are remembered in the Squadron’s trophy room in a pretty solid story!

TOHBTK001_covATales of Honor: Bred to Kill #1 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: Hawkins and Wickline do the Honorverse justice in another great issue! Pick this up if you haven’t already!

Tech Jacket #10 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Huge space battle involving aliens and mech suits never looked so good thanks to Khary Randolph!

Thors #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: A detective story that was more fun than expected but Beta Ray Bill deserves better

Wonder Woman #41 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. The creative team does a good job explaining the costume change. A decent jumping-on point for new readers.

X-O Manowar #37 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: At some point all of those Shanara armors are going to need a one-shot because now I want to see and know more!
