detective comics 33Batman: Detective Comics #33
Writers: Brian Buccellato and Francis Manapul
Artists: Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato
Cover Artists: Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato
Publisher: DC

There’s much to be said about two of DC’s most underrated creators, from their fascinatingly entertaining writing, their breathtakingly gorgeous artwork, and a personal favorite, their tremendous storytelling ability. These two manipulate the comic book medium in their own favor. Their layouts are smart and sexy, their use of space and design is wonderful, and their ability to meld their writing and their art in a way that can only truly exist in comics is really what makes comics so worthwhile. Their first arc on the series is closing in on its end, and while you can expect Batman to be hot on the enemy’s trail, you can never truly gauge how well a story is going to be until you read it. 5/5

teen titans 1Teen Titans #1
Writer: Will Pfeifer
Artists: Kenneth Rocafort and Dan Brown
Cover Artists: Kenneth Rocafort
Publisher: DC

Will Pfeifer is exactly what this series needed to give it a healthy distance from the previous volume, while maintaining a semblance of continuity. Towards the end of the last series, the Teen Titans were less of a team and more just a gathering of super teenagers. From the first couple of pages, Pfeifer establishes the team dynamic, who’s in charge, the type of relationship they all have, and most importantly of all, the book reads like a team book, which volume one had done initially, but teetered away from towards the end. Kenneth Rocafort and Dan Brown deliver a gorgeous book. Rocafort’s art is perfectly paired with the fast paced, action packed story Pfeifer writes. Hopefully this is a sign that this team will work effectively for a long time. 4/5

I was really interested in your thoughts about this new Teen Titans title since the last one failed miserably towards the end. I thought his issue was a nice start and anything that Rocafort is drawing is going to look fantastic so that’s a major plus right there.

I’m really hoping this one stays fun and worth my money because I took a chance on the last title and when it started to go downhill I was ticked.
