Black Lightning: Cold Dead Hands #6
Publisher: DC
Story: Tony Isabella
Pencils: Clayton Henry & Yvel Guichet
Colors: Pete Pantazis
Letters: Josh Reed
Cover: Clayton Henry & Tomeu Morey

Black Lightning is still reeling from last issue’s beatdown at the massive hands of Tobias Whale but he soon finds out that BL has a little more left in the tank and isn’t done yet. With a little planning and help from his friends this issue throws in some twists and wraps up this mini-series that will leave readers satisfied and hopefully wanting more. It helped to have BL’s creator, Tony Isabella, leading the reintroduction since he knows Jefferson Pierce aka Black Lightning best and he’s able to give us a full character in such a short time. Not only that but the introduction of the supporting cast was just as fulfilling. Clayton Henry’s visuals just kills it on this issue with help from Yvel Guichet. Now the end isn’t a perfect one as things in the neighborhood gradually fall back to the old routines but what we do get is hope. Hope for a better tomorrow and hope in the fact that Black Lightning’s back! 4/5 – IS

Deathstroke #30
Publisher: DC Comics
Story: Christopher Priest
Pencils: Carlo Pagulayan
Inks: Jason Paz
Colors: Jeremy Cox
Letters: Willie Schubert
Cover: Francesco Mattina

Deathstroke versus Batman will always be a compelling matchup. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t excited to see the two do battle. However, I can’t seem to care on this particular occasion. After stumbling across some life changing information regarding his son Damian Wayne, Batman forces a confrontation with Deathstroke to clear things up. This story starts off in rather an interesting way, with a conversation between Bruce Wayne and Slade Wilson’s attendants Alfred and Wintergreen. Laying out their similarities and speculating on the implications of a serious confrontation between the two. That was a pretty cool sequence interspersed with some commentary from Robin and Jericho but fast forward to and we come to Batman. Batman is angry, and rightfully so, but it’s Deathstroke’s nonchalant response to this “new” information that I thought was interesting. He simply doesn’t believe or care and completely diffuses any tension that could have been building, and the momentum going forward is completely dissolved. The art is really good and I can’t take away from the skill of Pagulayan here at all. He does his thing page for page. However, this manufactured conflict feels like the battle in Batman V Superman, it simply falls flat…2/5 – ES
