Batman Eternal #37

Getting closer and closer to its conclusion every week, it was only a matter of time until this series had a lackluster issue. The basic story was decent enough, and the art wasn’t particularly horrendous, however, as a package this issue came up short. With as many villains as this issue has, it somehow manages to maintain an oddly monotonous tone throughout. Even Killer Croc and Bane fighting in the sewers wasn’t nearly as exciting as it should have been. Some of this can be attested to the rather static nature of the artwork, however, the dialogue also fell flat throughout the issue. That being said, the issue ended on a rather high note. It was a nice cliffhanger/lead-in to the next issue, and for a weekly series that’s pretty much the most important thing. 2/5

Grayson Annual #1

Tim Seeley and Tom King continue to prove that they are the right team for this book. Taking place in Ireland, Helena Bertinelli and Dick Grayson find themselves in a tough spot as they try to take down a guy who just happens to be glowing green. While it is an annual, because of how the series is set up, it reads as just another issue. Seeley and King do a fantastic job of integrating lore into their own storytelling, making the story that much more entertaining. The little tidbits they threw in there, like the reference to Matches Malone, as well as the SPYRAL mind control not working properly, do a nice job of keeping things relevant. 4/5

Damian is back. While spoilers of his return have been floating around the internet for months now, it’s still nice to have the annoying little brat back. His death was sad and unfortunate, and while comics do get a bad rap because no one ever stays dead, I for one am glad that he’s returned. Damian was a nice addition to the Bat-Family, because of how different he was from the rest of the Robins, and yet how similar he was to Bruce. Their dynamic was entertaining, to say the least, especially given how wonderful Dick and Damian were together as Batman and Robin. With Damian’s new powers, their relationship is in for another exciting shift. 4/5
