Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 01/22/14

All-New Invaders #1 (Marvel)
Jeff: Not a bad issue, but just not interesting enough to hook me.

All-New X-Factor #2 (Marvel)
Arnab: I dig it.
Infinite Speech: Might not be for me.
Jeff: Feeling a bit indifferent about this book and its new direction.
NickZ: I’m digging everything about this book, from the actual book layout and design, to the crazy art, and the awesome story.

anxm 22All-New X-Men #22 (Marvel)
Arnab: I could use a bit more Scott and Laura time and a lot less angsty Jean time. Also, young Iceman is my current favorite Iceman.
Infinite Speech: So that last arc was a serious dud compared to how great this issue is! So glad the Trial of Jean Grey arc has started!
Jeff: Call me a sap, but I could read a book by Bendis & Immonen with nothing but Scott & Jean arguing throughout the whole issue every month.
NickZ: All the Scott and Jean feels! I wonder if there are any hints to the future on Beast’s blackboard?

Avengers #25 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: WTF just happened?? Oh and Larroca made it look good but still…wtf?!

Avengers World #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: A.I.M. is looking to be more than cazy guys in bee keeper hats! Solid issue!

Batman #27 (DC)
Arnab: Scott Snyder is at his best when he is focusing on and developing relationships.
Dr. Bustos: Long live purple-gloved Batman!
Jeff: I don’t think I understand the Riddler’s plan, but I really like the Gordon stuff.
Martin: Some really great scenes involving the relationships between Bruce, Alfred, & Jim Gordon, + Capullo’s awesome art.
NickZ: Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo are making a masterpiece with this storyline and the Riddler has never been more dangerous.

Batman and Robin #27 (DC)
NickZ: Two-Face’s vendetta continues with Batman caught in the middle.

Bedlam #11 (Image)
Arnab: Dude, Jusice is about to snap.
Jeff: That Irving cover is great…I just wish he would do the interiors on this book, because Browne’s art is making it suffer.

Birds of Prey #27 (DC)
NickZ: I think I am more interested now if Batgirl is going to be running the show.

Black Widow #2 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: Natasha’s lawyer is one scary fella.
Jeff: This issue centered on Natasha, but I found the subplot of her accountant, Ross, to be a gentle description of how badass he is.

Blaze Brothers #1 (Blaze Comics)
Infinite Speech: Martial arts trained hitmen? Action, great dialogue, violence? Hell yeah I’m on board!!

Cable and X-Force #19 (Marvel)
Arnab: People I want to see die at the end of this: Bishop, Pyslocke, Stryfe, and Wolverine.
Infinite Speech: Make Bishop and Forge go away and we’ll call it even Marvel.
Jeff: Ok, the art in this issue made me more interested and I’m back on board.
NickZ: The interactions between both X-Force teams is pretty great. Am I the only one wishing for a Forge/Storm reconciliation?

chew 39Chew #39 (Image)
Arnab: John Layman is the best non-linear storyteller.
Jeff: The signs and pictures in the background of this issue made me laugh.
NickZ: Olive is such a badass! I dare anyone to find a better told story that jumps around as much as this book does and still makes perfect sense. Plus the BEST EASTER EGGS EVER!

Coffin Hill #4 (Vertigo)
@decapitateddan: Each issue of this book makes it harder and harder to put down. Things are really picking up now, and I hope they don’t let up for a long time. Great comic! 4.5

Crossed Badlands #45 (Avatar Press)
@decapitateddan: I’m liking the story in this arc by Way, but the dialogue is a little tough to read. Still, it’s a good issue, plenty of build for what’s to come. 4/5

The Dead #1 (Indie)
@decapitateddan: A really fun start to this one. Loved the art, and the story has a very House of Mystery vibe to it. Looking forward to more. 4/5

Deadly Class #1 (Image)
Martin: Visually stunning with an intriguing, but dark, story to match. Remender knows how to capture the feel of 1987.

Elfquest: The Final Quest #1 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech: Never EVER read an Elquest book before. Had a good time with this one.

Empire of the Dead #1 (Marvel)
@decapitateddan: Slow start, but it really picked up at the end. And what a shocking twist too! Really good issue overall. I look forward to more. 4/5

Eternal Warrior #5 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Being Gilad must suck but be so cool at the same time! Valiant has another hit on their hands with this one!

Extinction Parade #4 (Avatar Press)
@decapitateddan: Beat issue yet. So in depth, so well done, and possibly the best death scene of the year. This is something you should be reading. 5/5

Ghosted #6 (Image Comics)
@decapitateddan: I was wondering how the story would continue, and now that I know, I’m excited! So glad this series is still going. More great art and story! 4.5/5

Hacktivist #1 (Archaia)
Infinite Speech: Yes, I’m on board now!

Harley Quinn #2 (DC)
NickZ: Harley and Ivy reunited and it feels so good!

Hawkeye #16 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: I’m loving Kate Bishop, P.I. so much.
NickZ: Kate is not doing to well in California. Could this book be more hipster having issue 16 coming out before 15?

Indestructible Hulk #18.INH (Marvel)
Jeff: Too much technical jargon which literally put me to sleep.

Justice League #27 (Marvel)
Martin: A solid “re-introduction” of Cyborg & fleeting glimpses of the Doom Patrol & Metal Men. Inconsistent art.
NickZ: Cyborg gets an upgrade despite his dad’s objections, but will it be enough to help Batman win back the world?

Marvel Knights X-Men #3 (Marvel)
NickZ: What do you know, Wolverine tries to kill a child because she can’t control her powers, but Cyclops is the bad guy.

Mighty Avengers #5 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: Power Man and White Tiger merging power attack was great. The Family Cage versus Superior Spidey was fantastic.
Infinite Speech: Still waiting on a new artist for this one. Loving the story though.

Midas Flesh #2 (Boom!)
Martin: I actually liked this a lot better than the 1st issue. The story is moving now, & there’s more background.

mocking dead 5Mocking Dead #5 (Dynamite Entertainment)
@decapitateddan: What!? I didn’t hate the ending, it was kind of funny, but not what I was expecting. I think I’m in shock still. I really liked this mini though. 4.5/5
Infinite Speech: Fred Van Lente has outdone himself!

Monsters! and Other Stories (Dark Horse)
@decapitateddan: PURE PERFECTION!!! We should all thank Duarte for sharing this gem with us. 5/5

Origin II #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Want to read something great by Gillen? Pick up Uber instead of this.
Jeff: So is this supposed to be the first time Logan and Creed meet? I was hoping for something more creative.
NickZ: The idea of tying Sinister to Wolverine’s past makes perfect sense and when you throw in Sabretooth, it’s a no brainer.

Pretty Deadly #4 (Image)
Dr. Bustos: Things are heating up and I’m scared to see where they go. I can’t wait

Red Hood and the Outlaws #27 (DC)
NickZ: Jason vs. Ra’s Al Ghul. ’nuff said.

Samurai Jack #4 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: So good that I sing the theme song before and after reading this!

Sex #10 (Image)
NickZ: This book keeps getting better and better. The world and it’s layers are so damn intriguing.

Superior Spider-Man Team-Up #9 (Marvel)
NickZ: Your greatest strength is also your greatest weakness, a lesson the Superior Spider-Man is beginning  to understand.

Ten Grand #6 (Image Comics)
@decapitateddan: Solid issue. I’m still adjusting to the artwork, not on board with it just yet. But great story, that just keeps getting better. 4/5

Trinity of Sin: Pandora #7 (DC)
Martin: A Art-wise: great. Story-wise: a rehash of every other Blight story. Good guys fight Blight, and lose.

Uber #9 (Avatar Press)
@decapitateddan: I keep telling myself that this can’t possibly get better, because it’s so good already, and then I read another issue. I LOVE UBER! 5/5

wd 120The Walking Dead #120 (Image)
Arnab: I get why Kirkman and co. aren’t killing Negan. But logically, why are all the snipers and sharpshooters killing everyone around him and leaving him alive?
Jeff: Things are really picking up in this story. People are dying, others are hurt, and we got the obligatory “CARL!” yell from Rick.
NickZ: The war is on! Holy crap, I am not ready for what’s to come.

Wolverine and the X-Men #40 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: What a sad ending to espionage.
Infinite Speech: THIS is the fun I was having when I first started the series! Glad to see it’s back!
Jeff: So, are Cyclops and Wolverine buddies again? I sure hope so ’cause I’m bored with the schism.
NickZ: One of the best Wolverine and Cyclops conversations since Schism! I hope this is the start of the X-Men reuniting.

Wonder Woman #27 (DC)
Dr. Bustos: Gods are just so messy.
NickZ: If you are not reading Wonder Woman you are missing one of the greatest stories going on in the pages of any DC book.

X-Men #9 (Marvel)
Arnab: Psylocke is everywhere and it’s not a good thing.
Infinite Speech: Slowly turning back around to a solid series.
Jeff: I still don’t understand why John Sublime is a good guy now and why he’s trying to mack on Rachel.
NickZ: The lady X-Men seem to have their S**t together so much better than their male counterparts.
