Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 02/28/18

Abbott #2 (Boom! Studios)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Misses just a bit from the magic of the first issue, but still presents very compelling characters, an intriguing mystery store, supernatural weirdness, and great panel designs. One of my new favorite series.
Infinite Speech: The supernatural detective story I didn’t know I wanted but I’m here till the end!

Action Comics #998 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Booster does some crazy time traveling stuff with Superman that… totally doesn’t matter. Again. Because everything’s put back to normal. This is the type of story that makes you realize that writers are afraid to change things.
NickZ: If Booster had returned Superman to the moment when he left, then no one would have had to violate time laws or whatever. Booster referencing the Marvel Universe was a nice wink to Marvel’s DC reference last week.

All-New Wolverine #31 (Marvel)
NickZ: I would be totally about this Honey Badger and Deadpool friendship but I still can’t forgive Deadpool for his actions during Secret Empire.

Avengers #682 (Marvel)
NickZ: This issue was a nice love letter to the fans of the Occupy Avengers book. If you never read that title, pick it up in trade because it is really awesome!
Infinite Speech: This story really picks up when Voyager isn’t around and we focus on great characters. Really good seeing Red Wolf and Hawkeye again too!

Batgirl #20 (DC)
NickZ: I never saw the resemblance between the Penguin and his son, but thanks to Batgirl, I think we all do now.

Black Panther #170 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Did NOT see the return of that character coming!

Champions #17 (Marvel)
NickZ: I was legit scared of Viv 2.0, so I can only imagine how the human Viv felt.

Darth Vader #12 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Vader and Palpatine were in an abusive relationship that Vader should have ended long before he tossed his ashy butt down that shaft in Jedi!

Detective Comics #975 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. After a very emotional story arc, this issue comes off flat. The art is great, but the inclusion of the entire “Bat Family” should be more meaningful than this, rather than “Bruce has issues.”
NickZ: It’s always something when the Bat-family gets together but damn, Babs really spilled the tea on Bruce’s true motives.

Doctor Strange #386 (Marvel)
NickZ: Strange should have known you can’t out cheat a cheater!
Infinite Speech: Bats is the best ghost dog ever!

Doom Patrol Justice League of America #1 (DC)
NickZ: Doom Patrol is a crazy title in general but the Milk Wars takes the cake on trippy.

Flash #41 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. I was hoping for more Grodd in this issue, and a deeper look into “OG” Wally West, but instead the issue delivers more mopey Barry acting out of character.
Infinite Speech: Barry’s self loathing is dragging this story down.

Giles #1 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: Teen Giles is falling for a Vampire? How ironic.
Infinite Speech: Didn’t know how I’d feel about this but so far it’s a nice entry in the Buffy mythos.

The Invincible Iron Man #597 (Marvel)
NickZ: All those years of Doom holding his superiority over every other villain is finally catching up with him now that he’s trying to reform.

Incidentals #6 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Thanks to Diamond my LCS didn’t get my copy so I wasn’t able to read how great this issue is.

Justice League of America #25 (DC)
NickZ: The problem with this book is that this team should be the street level Justice League but most of their adventures have been against extraterrestrials, alternate dimensional beings, microverse races, or ancient gods.

Kino #4 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Alistar needs to wake up so things can get moving.

Legion #2 (Marvel)
NickZ: If Legion is serious about fixing his mind he’d be better off going to another telepath to help verses sending a helpless shrink into the dangerous pit that is his mind.

Moon Knight #192 (Marvel)
NickZ: “I’m not one of those super heroes who won’t straight-up kill you”- Moon Knight to all those people who say he’s Marvel’s Batman. He is a bad ass on his own terms.

Motor Crush #10 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Glad to have this series back though it’s rough in these streets as this issue goes from exciting to heartbreatk real quick.

Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man #300 (Marvel)
NickZ: I bet you never thought you’d see the day when J Jonah Jameson would be trying to help Spider-Man, or Doctor Doom and Human Torch would be fighting side by side to save the day but they both happen in this issue!

Saga #49 (Image)
NickZ: Saga is one of the few books where every single character is fully developed and interesting in their own right.

Silencer #2 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Slows down a bit versus the previous issue, but that’s not necessarily bad. Honor gets grounded a bit more in her personal life to show she’s not just a Leviathan-trained killer. Of the “New Age of Heroes” books so far, this shows a lot of potential.
Infinite Speech: Wow. Okay so I take back my assumptions about how the 2nd issue would go because I’m sticking it out till the end now!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #79 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: When Raph talked back to Splinter he pretty much told his father he was ready to give him those hands. This is getting tense!

Teen Titans #17 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. A Garth-focused issue is fine, and I’m find trying to add more depth to characters, but he seems uncharacteristically depressed and mopey this issue. That’s Raven’s schtick, not Garth’s.
NickZ: Beast Boy has lost hope and it looks like people are already taking advantage of that.
Infinite Speech: Depressed Beast Boy makes for a sad issue.

The Terrifics #1 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. A strong entry in DC’s “New Age of Heroes” line. Don’t listen to people who are obsessed with comparing this to Fantastic Four. Read my review here!
Infinite Speech: I want to like this but I need it to be more than Fantastic Four adjacent.

X-Men Blue #22 (Marvel)
NickZ: The Poisons have officially returned and they have Jean Grey on their side!

X-O Manowar #12 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: After being set up and betrayed, Aric has finally had enough.
