Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 11/13/19

Batman and the Outsiders #7 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Now THIS is how Cassie is supposed to throw down!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Great moments involving Jefferson/Black Lightning and Katana, as well as with Cassandra & Duke. The Cassandra parts of the story are the real draw here, but overall this is shaping up to be a strong arc.

Black Panther and the Agents of Wakanda #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Not sure where this is going but Jim Zub’s crazy space adventures with the most random team members has me hooked!

Black Hammer/Justice League: Hammer of Justice #5 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. I haven’t followed Lemire’s Black Hammer universe since the debut issues a few years ago, but this series has made me interested in checking it out again, which I supposed is the whole point.

Catwoman #17 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Joelle Jones is carving out a nice spot for Catwoman that is all Selina! If you’re not reading this then start now!

Detective Comics #1015 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. The characterization of Mr. Freeze is a bit better here – I like villains who are more complex vs mustache-twirling idiots. What is off is Nora’s characterization, although I suspect that has to do with Luthor’s “gift.”

Event Leviathan #6 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Total waste of time and money. There’s tons of other comics to pick from than this mediocre mystery.
Martin: 3/5 stars. I really liked the IDEA of this, & I was intrigued by the spy elements & the different kind of story I thought this was telling. I loved the clandestine activities with Lois & the various heroes. But, this ending was a let down.

Fallen Angels #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Hill drops so much nuance and complexity here that he made me want to see how Kwannon’s journey ends! Another great X-Men title right here.

Far Sector #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Meet a new Green Lantern and a proper murder mystery you should start reading. You also can’t go wrong with Jamal Campbell’s artwork! HOLY $#@! this guy is amazing!

Flash #82 (DC)
Infinite Speech: I need to know we got here to King Cold and Barry in the position he’s in!
Martin: 4/5 stars. We’re back to a Flash book without a sense of fun and hope that epitomizes the Flash (or, at least, USED to). I also don’t like seeing the Rogues become murderers – that’s not their style. Still, the story is engaging with good art.

Gotham City Monsters #3 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. This is such a fun, creative concept, but it’s weighted down a bit by some very deep, deep references that almost seem required to appreciate the bigger story. Even with that, though, it’s one of the most fun DC books right now.

Justice League Odyssey #15 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The focus on Jessica Cruz has been good, but she’s a completely different character from the one introduced in Rebirth. I’m all for character growth, but I miss some of her quirks. But, this title is better now vs at launch.

Morbius #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I took a chance because I’m a fan of Vita’s work and this one did not disappoint so it looks like I’ll be sticking around for a few more issues.

Robotech: Remix #2 (Titan)
Infinite Speech: The new twist on an old fave is refreshing and worth picking up.

Ronin Island #8 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: Greg Pak does it again with another fantastic coming of age story!

Superman #17 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. This is a tough one to score, but honestly nothing really happens, as this is a lead-time to the big reveal coming later in December. But, Maguire’s art is great, and there are some great moments with Kara & Zod.

Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Blackest Night #1 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. These 1-shots have been a bit hit-and-miss, but this is 1 of the better ones to date. The juxtaposition of Dove, Lobo, Sinestro, and a surprise character (which makes perfect sense) is great.

Wonder Woman #82 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Having Orlando take over mid-arc is a bit of a challenge, and this issue seems to be almost like a recap to catch him, and the readers, up. Fun cameos from other female heroes in the DC universe.

X-Men #2 (Marvel)
Arnab: Xavier’s hubris in allowing all these villains to plant theirselves on the island seems like it’s going to be a bad idea. On a brighter note, Cyclops interacting with his kids as a father and not a general, is amazing.
Infinite Speech: See, allowing Apocalypse on the island just seems like a bad idea and this issue reinforces my assumptions.
