Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 10/24/18

Action Comics #1004 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. The reunion of Lois & Clark just doesn’t make sense. She never articulates exactly why she didn’t tell him that she’s back, other than to use the word “baby” about 25 times in three pages (has she called him this before, and I missed it?).

Amazing Spider-Man #8 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The Thieves Guild just ran the pockets of some of the most powerful heroes in the Marvel U and it’s hilarious!

Batman: Kings of Fear #3 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. I really like Jones’ art, but so far, the story has fallen a little flat for me. We’re 3 issues in and Scarecrow’s “plan” is nowhere to be seen. The best scene involved Batman kneeling down so as not to scare a little girl.

Books of Magic #1 (Vertigo)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The most approachable of the 4 Sandman Universe titles, featuring a reboot of teenage Timothy Hunter just learning about magic, with a cameo appearance by the Trenchcoat Brigade. See my full review here!

Coda #3 (Boom! Studios)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Visually, this comic is stunning, with creative imagery & a bright color palette that stand in contrast to the depressing post-apocalyptic world setting. Hum is such a complex, compelling character, & his relationship with his wife is getting complicated.

Detective #991 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. A big improvement over the previous few issues in this arc, with an interesting and unique take on Two-Face’s duality and an exploration behind the mystery of the murder that set this whole arc in motion.

Flash #57 (DC)
Infinite Speech: This Force Quest better be worth it because I’m not feeling the villain of the month theme here as the Sage Force conveniently hits all the Rouges.
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. While I am not a huge fan of the Strength Force & Sage Force, I love how Williamson used the Sage Force this issue to help Heat Wave. It’s also nice to see a “villain” who isn’t one-note, but has some depth. And, I liked Iris’ contributions.

Incidentals #13 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: This ceremony looks like it’ll be brutal but it’s taking too long to get to the payoff here.

Justice League Odyssey #2 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Getting tired of Cruz wanting to arrest everyone while the bigger danger of Darksied is staring her right in the face.
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Lots of good ideas & a compelling mix of characters, but it hasn’t meshed yet. Azrael is barely seen, & I’m still confused by his inclusion anyway. Jess needs to stop with her whole “I’m arresting you” thing. Young Darkseid is interesting.

Scarlet #3 (JinxWorld)
Infinite Speech: Why Kit?! Now things are going to go from worse to hell of a lot worse!

Shadowman #8 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Everything about this title has been worth checking out and this new arc is just as great!

Silencer #10 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Zircher and Abnett continue to keep this title at the top of the New Age of Heroes titles!

Spider-Geddon #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This has everything a great sequel should and it’s only the second part!

Terrifics #9 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. A fun, Silver Age style story with a huge cast of characters and weird worlds including one of animal versions of characters (“Ducktor Dread,” “Warren Strong”) and one with technologically advanced “Aztechs.” Great fun!

Wonder Woman #57 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. The Witching Hour event has been great so far, but this might be one of the best issues of the series. Hecate using magic to “fix” the world is interesting, and while it’s a “big event” it doesn’t forget to focus on the personal issues of its cast.
