Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 08/15/18

Animosity: Evolution #7 (AfterShock)
Infinite Speech: I was NOT expecting that and this is why Bennett has been on fire with this series since the main title stared!

Astonishing X-Men Annual #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Xavier has always been pretty shady but now, as X, he is just a complete a-hole! The X-Men are definitely going to have to take him down! (If they can ever remember that he exists)

Batman #53 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Those last couple of pages just lets you know how bad Bruce is hurting after being dumped by Catwoman.
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. This arc ended pretty much as I had predicted, with Bruce using the jury room as a sort of “therapy session” to help him work through his issues triggered by the failed Bat/Cat wedding. Love the art/colors for the “flashback” scenes. Black trunks return!
NickZ: Bruce dives deep into exploring the mythos of Batman and his God-like reputation!
Eric: Rethinking Batman’s methods using Bruce Wayne’s voice may be the best pivot to make after the not-wedding. 3/5

Batwoman #18 (DC)
NickZ: A great closure to this series that will make long time Batwoman fans pretty happy!

Cable & Deadpool Annual #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: A ridiculous time-travel tale of Cable and Deadpool but it really takes on more significance after you read the first issue of Extermination.

Coda #4 (Boom! Studios)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. Spurrier & Bergara continue to deliver visually stunning world-building & a complex, intriguing, & moving story in a post-magic apocalyptic wasteland. #DND players will find a lot of inspiration here. See my full review here!

Crowded #1 (Image)
Eric: Crowded starts off pretty slowly but takes a hard turn when the guns come out. Great artwork, cool story, and some interesting twists! 4/5

Deadpool Assassin #5 (Marvel)
NickZ: Deadpool is not a person with very many friends, so when you kill one of them, you will learn first hand why he is one of the best killers in the Marvel Universe!

Doctor Strange #4 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Doctor Strange in space is something I never thought I’d actually like.
NickZ: What happens when you let one of the most powerful magic user into the place where the most powerful magical weapons have been forged? We are about to find out!

Edge of Spider-Geddon #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Spider-Punk is back! ‘Nuff Said!!

Extermination #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I’m hooked on this new event! The twists and fantastic art from Larraz are a definite reason to pick this one up!
NickZ: Hot damn! Brisson and Larraz are not playing around with this X-Men event! Extermination starts with several bangs and I’m still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor!

Green Lanterns #53 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. While this story arc is intriguing, I would have preferred it it were a stand-alone mini-series, or folded into the Hal Jordan & the GL Corps series. I preferred this title when it focused more in the interactions of Jess & Simon.

Hunt for Wolverine the Claws of a Killer #4 (Marvel)
NickZ: This series did not tie up any loose ends! I hope “Dead Ends” does this book some justice.

Infinity Wars #2 (Marvel)
NickZ: Gamora is a straight up beast in this issue! If you want to see some crazy s*** go down, don’t miss this book! Duggan and Deodato do not disappoint!

Injustice vs Masters of the Universe #2 (DC)
Infinite Speech: This is one crazy @$$ crossover that fans of both should pick up.

Justice League #6 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Poor Batman. Beat down by Reverse Flash, dumped by Catwoman, and now wrecked by Luthor. 2018 is NOT Batman’s year.
Martin: 4/5 stars. So many narration boxes! But, the story with the League having to divide attention across a multitude of their worst individual foes continues to be strong, and a nice change of pace from the standard universe-ending plots.
NickZ: Snyder and Jimenez just overloaded my brain! The ideas happening here and the visuals to accompany them are out of this world! Mark my words, this will go down as one of the best Justice League stories of all time!

Magic Order #3 (Image)
Eric: Can you judge a book by it’s cover? You can in this case. Magic Order is a wild, crazy thriller that gets better with every issue. 5/5

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #30 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: The definitive Rangers story is happening in Shattered Grid and you should be reading it!

Multiple Man #3 (Marvel)
NickZ: Multiple Man’s civil war has taken quite the dark turn! It will be interesting to see if his gamble pays off.

New Challengers #4 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Bethany’s history was the best origin of the New Challs presented so far. That said, while the scenes with the dinosaur mounted vikings were fun, the setting was a bit under-utilized, and the presentation of the overall story is still confusing.

Ninjak #10 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Gage and Stromam deliver a killer cyborg ninja story with some action and heart.

Pearl #1 (DC/Jinxworld)
Infinite Speech: Didn’t know what to expect but the art from Michael Gaydos here is panel after panel of some of the best sequential storytelling in comics this week!

Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man #308 (Marvel)
NickZ:
If this truly is the death of the Sandman, then wow, that was a very powerful, bittersweet end.

Skyward #5 (Image)
Eric: Skyward gets good! I didn’t think I’d still be reading at this point but I’m glad I did. This one got me choked up. 4/5
Infinite Speech: After a couple of rough issues Skyward has been on fire and I’m glad I stuck it out!

Star Trek The Next Generation Terra Incognita #2 (IDW)
NickZ: Troi takes center stage as she’s forced to keep a disastrous peace negotiation from going in the toilet.

Summit #8 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Not the traitors I expected but glad things are picking up here.

Superb #12 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: We get Cipher’s origin and FINALLY it looks like Jonah is getting rescued!

Thor #4 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Thanos is straight savage.

Weatherman #3 (Image)
Infinite Speech: LeHeup, Fox, and Stewart are consistently delivering on my new favorite title! That last panel with Nathan is downright scary and next issue can’t come fast enough!
Eric: Nathan finally gets a chance to let loose and vent his anger and frustration and damn did it feel satisfying to see! 4/5

The Wicked + the Divine #38 (Image)
NickZ: Everyone in this book seems to be losing their s*** as we get closer and closer to the finale.
