Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 08/05/18

Adventures of Super Sons #2 (DC)
Infinite Speech: A kid inspired by young heroes decided to do the right thing even when the odds aren’t in his favor? Peter Tomasi just got all old school superhero storyteller on our asses and it’s wonderful!
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Lots of goofy fun, an interesting twist with one of the main villains, & an homage to classic 1990’s Superman story. On the downside, way too much dark, grim violence for a book like this. Damian is sidelined the entire issue.

Avengers #7 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: A story of the first Ghost Rider and Wendigo was more impressive than I expected.

Batman #54 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Tom King knocks another issue out the park and this one is an emotional good time.
Martin: 5/5 stars. I wanted to ding this issue down a notch due to DC’s stupid decision to replace artist Matt Wagner’s son as the colorist. That said, it’s a fantastic issue full of truly well-crafted character moments between Bruce Wayne & Dick Grayson. Highly recommended.

Border Town #1 (Vertigo)
Infinite Speech: I wasn’t prepared for how good this was going to be! We get the supernatural, a great cast, and a Nazi takes an L so thanks to the entire creative team for giving me a new book for my pull list!

Captain America #3 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: A Super Soldier, a King, and a Dora Milaje beat down a room full of Nukes and Coates reminds us why you don’t mess with Agent 13!

Cover #1 (Jinxworld)
Infinite Speech: This slow, methodical story is told with Mack showing off various art styles to move it along and now I want issue 2 immediately!

Deathstroke #35 (DC)
Infinite Speech: This has been the most layered paternity test story ever!

Green Arrow #44 (DC)
Martin: 2.5/5 stars. When GA re-launched with Rebirth, it was 1 of my favorites. But this current arc isn’t quite working. There are some interesting elements, but they aren’t meshing. Ollie’s dark past could potentially be unforgivable, but seems like a cheap retcon.

Green Lanterns #54 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Baz was seriously played by Cyborg Superman and I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the kid.
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Man, Simon is completely neutered in this issue. Simon is at his best when partnered with, & relying on, his partner Jessica Cruz, & vice-versa, but we’re getting none of that this arc and it diminishes both characters.

Justice League #7 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Various team members doing the Batman voice was just the icing on the cake as the first arc wraps and lets up know that big things are on the way!
Martin: 4/5 stars. There is so much going on in this issue that it’s nearly impossible to follow. That said, I really like the focus on a bad-guy “team” of villains to provide the conflict rather than some all-powerful multi-dimensional entity that I can’t relate to.

Noble #11 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Brandon Thomas just put our hero in a no-win situation and I can’t wait to see how this plays out next issue!

Predator: Hunters II #2 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech: Seeing Jaya’s motivations explained was great but seeing a Predator cut loose is even better!

The Raid #2 (Titan Comics)
Infinite Speech: Love seeing more of this world played out for us in this series!

Sandman Universe – The Dreaming #1 (Vertigo)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. A fantastic follow-up to the original Gaiman Sandman stories of the 1990’s with compelling new additions such as Dora, a complex, intriguing character. Read my full review here!

Transformers: Unicron #4 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: I need this animated and on the big screen immediately because each issue has been better than the next and fans of these characters will not be disappointed!
