Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 02/15/17

Adventure Time Comics #8 (Boom!)
NickZ: Marshall Lee and Lumpy Space Prince go out exploring various music scenes to find their personal niche.

Angel #2 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: If you were ever interested in seeing Illyria in her prime, then this issue is for you!

Batman #17 (DC)
Arnab: King is doing the type of Batman story we haven’t seen in a while and it is fantastic.
Infinite Speech: Glad I stuck with this because Tom King is knocking it out the park lately!
Martin: 5/5 stars. The layouts in this are amazing & complement the storytelling in a way that comics do better than any other medium.
NickZ: King and Finch are killing it on this book with some fantastic storytelling! I cannot wait for the next issue!

Batman TMNT Adventures #4 (IDW)
NickZ: This book is so much fun! They totes need to make an animated movie out of this series!

Batwoman Rebirth #1 (DC)

Martin: 3.5/5 stars. The art is really what’s carrying this score. The story shows potential, but as a standalone it falls flat.
NickZ: A nice reintroduction to Kate Kane with a few surprises sprinkled in to peak your interests.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #4 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: Concentration camp life proves even more difficult than Buffy and Spike had anticipated. I loved that the last line of this issue had a super old throw-back reference.

Deadpool #27 (Marvel)
NickZ: Interesting prelude to Secret Empire. I’m hoping Agent Coulson plays as major a role as this issue suggests.

Doctor Strange #17 (Marvel)
NickZ: Wait, so Doctor Strange has only been a sorcerer for 5 years!?! Is Marvel pulling some New 52 nonsense?

Doctor Strange #1.MU (Marvel)
NickZ:
The Doctor and Googam make strange bedfellows as they go on the hunt for one large monster and to win back their own self respect.
Green Arrow #17 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. This continues to be one of my favorite DC books. Excellent art & intriguing political/mystery story.

Green Lanterns #17 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. The 2-issue team-up with Batman was fun, & explored Simon’s character more, which had been missing.

Horizon #8 (Image)
Infinite Speech: This creative team keeps blowing past expectations and has infused comics with a fantastic sci-fi title!

Invincible #133 (Image)
NickZ:
Funerals, weddings, betrayals, an Image Comics 25th anniversary tribute cover, and the return of Ryan Ottley all for only 25 cents!

Justice League #15 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Time travel stories can be a ton of fun, & while this is more of a complicated set-up issue, I’m intrigued.
NickZ: A very convoluted time travel story. Meh.

Lumberjanes #35 (Boom!)
NickZ: You’re not Lumberjane cool until you have a roller derby competition against some Sasquatches at summer camp!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #11 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: THIS is how you continue the classic Rangers and it’s only getting better with each issue!

Monsters Unleashed #3 (Marvel)
NickZ:
Okay Marvel, more monsters fighting monsters and less trying to make the Inhumans happen.

Nightwing #15 (DC)
Arnab: It’s like the “How to win Dick Grayson over in 68 days or less” story, and it works out wonderfully. I am loving this trend of having other members of the Bat-Fam pop  in.
Martin: 4/5 stars. A “breather” issue in between 2 arcs, but really allows us to explore Dick’s character & his relationships.
NickZ: I loved this story. It’s 68 day examination of this blossoming relationship is delightfully executed using a rotating cast of great guest stars.

Old Man Logan #18 (Marvel)
NickZ:
Andrea Sorrentino’s art and layouts are breathtaking! This issue had so many jaw-dropping visuals, I cannot say enough good things about it.

Poe Dameron #11 (Marvel)
NickZ: Poe and 3 droids take on an entire squadron of criminals, I guess he is not a fan of the odds either.

Postal #18 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: I want to use a lot of explatives to express how great this series is but just read it for yourself!
NickZ: Hill and Goodhart did a seamless job mirroring the parallel stories going on with Mark and Agent Bremble.

Raven #6 (DC)
Martin:3/5 stars. Raven is a great character & worthy of exploration, but this 6-issue miniseries was about 3 issues too long.

Savage #4 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Well that was exciting and THIS creative team needs to be attached when this series returns!

Sex Criminals #16 (Image)
Arnab:
Low-key, it’s been so long I thought this was over. Glad it’s not.
NickZ:
Our 8 month dry spell is finally over! Sex Criminals is back and with a very sexy Fiona Staples variant cover to boot!

Star-Lord #3 (Marvel)
NickZ: Anika’s renderings of Peter Quill are giving Nightwing a run for his money!

Superman #17 (DC)
Martin:
4/5 stars. Adding a touch of horror to Superman is never a bad thing. Explores Jon & Kathy’s growing friendship. Great art.
NickZ: Jon and his “girlfriend” have a cute little spooky adventure.

Super Sons #1 (DC)
Arnab: So damn adorable. Which I’m sure is a description that they both would hate, but nevertheless, there it is.
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. By now people should know I’m a fan of “fun” in comics. This book w/ Damian & Jon seems headed in that direction
NickZ: First there was Bruce & Clark, then came Tim & Con, and now to continue the tradition of “World’s Finest” we have Damian & Jon!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #67 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: There’s way too much about this issue that makes it a must read but Slash taking out his friends is a start!

Trinity #6 (DC)
Martin:
3/5 stars. Great art, but way too complicated & forced. The 1 thing that give me hope is the solicitation for “Evil Trinity.”
NickZ: What a great first arc! This was a perfect way to reestablish the DC Trinity with the new/old Superman.

The Uncanny Inhumans #19 (Marvel)
NickZ: Maximus and his brotherhood of evil Inhumans may hold the solution to this mutant/Inhuman war, but i doubt it.

Uncanny X-Men #18 (Marvel)
NickZ: Xorn and Shaw have a clash over the treatment of their Inhuman prisoners, to everyone’s dismay.

The Walking Dead #164 (Image)
NickZ:
No matter how many good deeds Negan does, I will NEVER like and/or trust him.

The Wild Storm #1 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. There’s a lot of legacy with this book, including the imprint itself and the writer doing it. In short – it works
