Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 02/27/19

Action Comics #1008 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. This issue focuses mainly on the supporting cast and some outsiders, such as Amanda Waller, Director Bones, and Adam Strange, but it all comes together in a true mystery that is unfolding, at least for now, at the exact right pace.

Aliens: Resistance #2 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech:
How is everything except what the main characters are doing more exciting here? Zula and Ripley deserver better than this.

Amazing Spider-Man #16 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Kraven’s family is severely screwed up but now I want a mini series where he goes after poachers.

Avengers: No Road Home #3 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Whenever Hulk is the smartest in the room it makes for a scary vibe but overall issue 3 is a stutter step in a story that was just striding along.

Black Panther #9 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Gotta give it to Coates because this series has been on 100 since it began and the twists in this issue are great! Now to impatiently wait to see what this version of Manifold can do!

Bloodshot #4 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Kevin Grevioux’s Bloodshot is a wild ride but I still want a definitive origin for the guy!

Books of Magic #5 (Vertigo)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Tim Hunter, and this title, at last intersect with the other Sandman Universe titles, as Tim enters The Dreaming, courtesy of the surrealistic art by Tom Fowler. This is my favorite Sandman Universe title, and this issue showcases why.

Captain America #8 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Steve needs to keep his shirt on and Coates writes a great moment between Sharon Carter and Kingpin in here!

Coda #9 (Boom!)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The sequences of Hum writing in his diary as he begins to cope with his recent break-up is some of the best, most relatable character development in comics. Then you add that crazy twist ending, and it gets even better!

Daredevil #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Zdarsky has me on board as I’m always down for a good mystery and well written DD and Kingpin moments.

Detective Comics #999 (DC)
Martin
: 2/5 stars. Disappointing. Pointless. This arc had every chance to be a grand lead-in to #1000 but instead feels like a filler story that wasn’t sure where it was going, and it based on a ridiculous premise to begin with.

Die! Die! Die! #8 (Image)
Infinite Speech: This series is pure adrenalin with a dash of HOLY $#@! thrown in! The first arc is over but I can’t wait to see where it goes after the cliffhanger we’re left on!

Flash #65 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Batman deserved to get a beat down from Barry after what he said.

Forgotten Queen #1 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Howard and Pinna deliver one great debut for the Forgotten Queen that should be in your stack of new comics!

Freedom Fighters #3 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. In concept, this series hits a lot of buttons for me: alternate history, World War 2/Nazis, & legacy Golden Age characters. In execution, however, it’s not living up to what I think it should. We’re only 3 issues in, so hopefully it gets better.

Heroes in Crisis #6 (DC)
Infinite Speech: This seems like one of those events that flow better once collected.
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Individually, I really liked the 3 different stories of 3 of the “residents” of Sanctuary (particularly the Gnaark story) & the visuals are great. As part of an ongoing story about something that’s supposed to be “important,” it’s less successful

Justice League Odyssey #6 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Unfortunately this series is floundering, in no small part due to the constant changing creative teams. There was a good idea here (except for Azrael – I never liked him as part of this team), but the story is going nowhere issue after issue.

Shazam #3 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. King Kid betraying the team was telegraphed from miles away, but the manner in which he does it (and why) is at least different. I’m looking forward to learning about the 7 Magic Lands and how the Shazam Family are going to be their guardians.

Silencer #14 (DC)
Infinite Speech: How is anyone sleeping on this series! It’s THE best thing to come out of the New Age of Heroes!

Summit #13 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: You should get this just for the crossover with Noble who is just too “noble” for his own good!

Superior Spider-Man #3 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: We really don’t deserve Anna Maria.

The Terrifics #13 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. It’s almost sad to enjoy this, knowing that Lemire is leaving soon. This title has been so much fun and shows so much of what the potential is for having a FUN comic instead of “doom & gloom & dark & gritty.” The scenes of the other universes were great!

Wonder Woman #65 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The mystery of the disappearance of Themyscira & Olympus, how the gods have affected earth, and the true nature of Nemesis are fascinating and fun reading. Add in a bit of an unexpected twist with Veronica Cale, & you get a truly enjoyable comic.
