Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 02/06/19

Adventures of the Supersons #7 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Damian is gonna Damian regardless of what planet he’s on! I love the relationship between him and Jon and hopefully DC doesn’t screw it up anytime soon!
Martin: 2/5 stars. Sadly, this 12-issue series has lost me after this issue. I thoroughly enjoyed the predecessor title but this doesn’t capture any of the fun or the relationship between Damian & Jon. Rex Luthor is a 1-dimensional villain I don’t care about

Age of X-Man: Marvelous X-Men #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: If it looks too good to be true it probably is and it looks like X-23 might be on the verge of finding out what’s wrong with this world.

Avengers #14 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The Avengers meet the new vampire leader and this is turning out to be one great arc from Aaron, Marquez, and Ponsor!

Batman #64 (DC)
Infinite Speech: This is the type of crossover that we deserve as Batman and Flash have a mystery to uncover!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Start of a 4-issue Batman/Flash cross-over tied into Heroes in Crisis. Oddly, it’s only tangentially related to HiC. The focus is on a character missing from Rebirth Batman for nearly 2 years: Gotham Girl. I’m cautiously intrigued about where this is going.

Black [AF]: Devil’s Dye #2 (Black Mask)
Infinite Speech: Vita Ayala wrote some of the best dialogue I’ve seen in comics this week and I’m seeing this one till the end!

Daredevil #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I argued with myself on whether to pick up yet ANOTHER DD number 1. Well this was worth it because Zdarsky writes a great intro to DD’s foray back into Hell’s Kitchen. The back-up story was told in a unique way as well.
NickZ: It took a kick ass Netflix series & my love of Chip Zdarsky to get me to pick up my first ever Daredevil book and boy did it deliver! I am already in love with this take on the character and Checchetto’s art is perfect! Can’t wait to dive in deeper to Matt Murdock’s psyche!

Deathstroke #40 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Priest is giving us one top tier series in Deathstroke and you should have it in your read pile!

Die #3 (Image)
NickZ: If Gillen can give me feels like this over “throw-away” characters we just met, then we are really in for a treat as this series develops.

Female Furies #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: The Female Furies has a point to make and it’s done well with both story and art! Also, get you a friend that will help you bury the body.
Martin: 3/5 stars. The idea of a book focusing on the Furies of Apokalips is intriguing, but the execution in this 1st issue doesn’t quite hit the mark. Getting more background on Granny Goodness is fine, but making her a sympathetic character isn’t the way to do it.
NickZ: Granny and the Furies are fighting sexism on Apokolips? I’m not sure what I was expecting with this book, but this isn’t it. It’s even more awkward that it sounds.

Green Arrow #49 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. A really different look at a superhero vs supervillain fight. Count Vertigo has a beef with Roy Harper, NOT Arsenal (or Speedy or Red Arrow or whatever he’s calling himself). His reaction when he learns he can’t exact revenge on Roy was unexpected.

Green Lantern #4 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. Grant Morrison’s & Liam Sharp’s run so far has been pure science-fiction goodness, reminiscent of older Silver Age stories but with modern sensibilities. Sharp’s alien designs alone are worth the cover price. Tons of fun!

Justice League #17 (DC)
Infinite Speech: WHOA!! Snyder just dropped a huge bomb on us with a connection between Luthor and Martian Manhunter and it was perfect!
Martin: 4/5 stars. After so many big, epic-scale issues, things slow down to focus on an intimate character study of 2 characters who seldom interact together: J’onn J’onnz & Lex Luthor. The implications of their meeting have more impact than dozens of explosions.

Killmonger #4 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Hill and Ferreyra are telling a story you want that has everything you’ve been asking for in a great comic!

Marvelous X-Men #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Compared to Uncanny, the “Age of X-Man” is a snore fest.

Noble #15 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Kevin Grevioux takes over writing duties and gives us more on David and it reveals so much about why he chose his superhero name. But what is Astonisher doing at the end??

Sandman Universe: The Dreaming #6 (Vertigo)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The conclusion of the first arc, and yet things are still as crazy and mixed up as they started. Dora’s journey has been the most interesting so far, but the ending indicates yet another new, unexpected change in the Dreaming.

Uncanny X-Men #11 (Marvel)
NickZ: The X-Men are “dead”, anti-mutant hatred is at an all time high, mutantkind is on the brink of extinction, and once again it’s up to Cyclops to make it right! It must be Tuesday!

Vindication #1 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: Maybe I’m burnt out on $#**y cops and the $#**y justice system’s treatment of Black men stories because it hits too close to home. So I’ll just say this one wasn’t for me. Hopefully it’s out there for someone else though.

Young Justice #2 (DC)
Infinite Speech: DC’s Wonder Comics is the new hotness and this trip to Gemworld is the story I didn’t know I wanted!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Bendis’ take on these teenage characters is so far doing more for me than his Superman & Action runs. Wonder Girl’s interactions with her “grandpa” Zeus are great. My only minor quibble is the pacing and order of some of the dialogue & panels.
NickZ: Not as great as the first issue but still infinitely better than what Bendis is doing with Superman.
