Avengers #3 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The team is coming together, it’s Odin’s fault, and I should have bought Marvel Legacy #1 to understand this a little better.
Batman #49 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Catwoman and Joker are bleeding out and having the best conversation ever! Tom King does it again!
Martin: 4/5 stars. This is a difficult one to review because while I really enjoyed the conversation between Joker and Catwoman, and the insights into their backgrounds and personality, the premise to get to that scene was odd, & there are various other plot holes as well.
NickZ: I don’t understand how Tom King can keep up this level of excellence in his story telling with perfect characterizations but he nails it EVERY TIME! It doesn’t hurt that he has Mikel Janin’s mastery of facial expression nuances at the ready!
Batman Prelude to the Wedding Red Hood vs. Anarky #1 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. While this could have served to offer more insight into Jason’s relationship with Bruce, it instead involves a (at best) C-level Batman villain, and inconsistencies with secret identities being known, etc.
NickZ: Anarky seemed really different from the last time we saw him in Detective Comics. I applaud Jason using unorthodox methods for solving this problem.
Batwoman #16 (DC)
NickZ: Kate is forced to choose between her sister and her loyalty to the Bat. And she also dishes some unpleasant truths about Arkham.
The Brave and the Bold #5 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Sharp’s art continues to impress – it’s perfect for this fantasy story featuring monsters and gods from Celtic myth. The main downside to this story is that sometimes it seems Wonder Woman & Batman are there mainly just to have “name” characters.
NickZ: An interesting twist but not something so unexpected in these kind of tales.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: Season 12 starts like a freight train going a million miles a second and doesn’t stop! And while I am personally irritated by a new development in Buffy’s personal life, I am still eager to see what happens next!
Cable #158 (Marvel)
NickZ: Cable revisits 90’s X-Force, so yeah.
Deadly Class #35 (Image)
NickZ: Remender and Craig make you care about each of these characters and the decisions they make as if they were your friends or family in real life and that is a pretty remarkable feat!
Doctor Strange #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Strange in space is new, weird, and different so I think I’ll stick around for a bit as see how it plays out.
NickZ: I have a feeling Doctor Strange’s controversial solution to this particular problem is going to come back and bite him in the a$$ at some point.
Executive Assistant: Iris #2 (Aspen)
Infinite Speech: The flashback was more interesting than the main story but I’m here for Northcott’s new direction with Iris and to see just how bad HR at Magni really is.
Flavor #2 (Image)
Martin: 4/5 stars. It is so nice to a kid-friendly book that is not just another licensed-character book. There’s a bit more development for main characters Xoo and Uncle Geof, including a surprising twist for Geof, and also great back-matter for aspiring young chefs.
Hit-Girl #5 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Not sure how Mindy survived the night but I’m here to see what Lemire has in store for her next issue!
Hunt for Wolverine the Claws of a Killer #2 (Marvel)
NickZ: Did you ever wonder what it would be like to have Sabretooth, Lady Deathstrike, and Daken in the Walking Dead? Well this series scratches that particular itch.
Infinity Countdown Black Widow #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Black Widow is out of her element using an Infinity Stone to try and fight a resurrected Jamie Braddock!
Infinity Countdown Champions #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: The Champions get drawn right in the middle of a conflict between Warbringer and Thanos himself!
Justice League #2 (DC)
Infinite Speech: This was a fantastic issue and Lex Luthor is petty as hell!
Martin: 4/5 stars. I’m really enjoying Snyder’s characterization of the various members of the new Justice League, especially Martian Manhunter and John Stewart in this issue. Jorge Jimenez continues to do excellent art.
NickZ: How can you fit so much awesomeness into one book? Snyder and Jimenez managed to pull it off in this issue! The League hasn’t been this good since the animated series!
The Man of Steel #4 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. There’s a lot of potential in this, but it’s just not hit on all cylinders yet. The reveal of the mystery behind Lois & Jon’s disappearance was lackluster at best, and annoying at worst. There’s no follow-up on the arson plot in this, either.
NickZ: It took four issues but this book finally peaked my interest. Enough to get me to read Bendis upcoming Superman ongoing book? The jury is still out.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #29 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: The creative team keeps banging out great issues here and I can’t wait to see the new status quo when Shattered Grid is over!
New Challengers #2 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. This issue focuses on Moses Barber, one of the more interesting characters in the New Challengers so far. The story intertwines Moses’ backstory of how he became a Challenger with an undersea adventure that includes Atlantean sea monsters & Aquaman!
Planet of the Apes: Ursus #6 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: Did you have to do Ursus like that that?
Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man Annual #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: We actually see a softer side of Jameson and learn what made him buy pictures from a teenage boy from Queens to begin with. It’s actually quite sweet.
Shadow Man #4 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: A look at the past Shadowman as the current one is closer to death. Love that character design for Jack’s great-grandfather. Simple, cool, and all Shadowman.
Summit #6 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: It’s a slow burn but I’m liking Amy Chu’s team here.
Superb #10 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: This is a great series but how is Walker going to get these kids out of this mess?
Tony Stark: Iron Man #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I’m a sucker for a Fin Fang Foom appearance but that might not be enough to keep me here.
Wayward #26 (Image)
Infinite Speech: So glad this book is back on the shelves and it’s a nice reintroduction and starting point for a new reader.
NickZ: The Wayward kids have now been branded terrorists! Fighting the demonic forces of evil just got a lot harder.
X-Men Gold #30 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The nostalgia was good and Marquez outdid himself with that panel of Storm flying but the end was a bit anticlimactic for me. Those two stopped working as a couple for me back in the late 90s.
NickZ: I wasn’t feeling this wedding to begin with so I am not upset with the outcome. And if you read the Rogue and Gambit miniseries you shouldn’t have been surprised by that turn of events either!
