Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 04/18/18

Action Comics #1000 (DC)
Arnab: “Of Tomorrow” was so good. Never been a huge Superman fan, but this was all good stuff.
Infinite Speech:
A nice collection of stories for Big Blue and they really get to the heart of who the character is.
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. DC had a tall order making this issue, & it’s bound not to please everyone. There are some true gems of stories in this milestone issue, particularly “The Car” & “Of Tomorrow” but all of them are pretty good. Definitely worth the higher price.
NickZ: Some really good stories honoring Supes on his 80th but Bendis starting off his run by altering Superman’s origin is cheap tactic to give his story weight.

Amazing Spider-Man #799 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Anti-Venom is able to come through in the end but that cliffhanger is CRAZY!!

Avengers #689 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This is the Avengers event we deserved a while back! It’s got everything you’d want in a huge superhero comic story!
NickZ: Once again the Scarlet Witch proves why she is the most valuable/dangerous Avenger around

Batman #45 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Even if I didn’t read this title I’d have picked it up because I feel Batman’s words on the cover on a cellular level!
Martin: 4/5 stars. I’m a sucker for alternate history/elseworlds stories. Booster Gold being responsible, and dealing with his good intentions but horrible result is fun, even if it does suspend disbelief. Booster shouldn’t be quite this reckless.
NickZ: Booster Gold: the biggest idiot you’ve never heard of! That being said, this alternate world/timeline(?) is CRAZY!

Batman Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II #6 (DC)
Infinite Speech: I need a Raph/Damian mini-series after this!
NickZ: It only took Bane nearly destroying New York for Donatello to realize the value of his mind.

Batwoman #14 (DC)
NickZ: I’ve heard of dysfunctional families but this is ridiculous!

Black Panther #172 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: So we’re still pushing the T’Challa/Ororo relationship huh? We know it should have been her and Forge at the end of this and considering who the villain was it would have been perfect!

The Brave and the Bold #3 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Probably the best issue of the series so far, but it hasn’t been a high bar. Sharp’s spectacular art has been this series’ main attraction, but with this issue, his writing has begun to capture the voices of Bruce & Diana.
NickZ: I love how quickly Batman is able to adapt his methods to suit this strange new environment. He really is prepared for everything!

Cable #156 (Marvel)
NickZ: Nadler and Thompson did a great job of cutting between Cable’s time raising Hope and Scott and Jean’s time raising him to tell a very emotional story for a usually stoic character.

Descender #29 (Image)
NickZ: As the human and robot war escalates, Tim makes a desperate plea to the Descenders for help, while Andy is forced to choose between being a Scrapper or saving his brother.

Green Lanterns #45 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. I was disappointed when Humphries left this title, but the two most recent issues of Seeley’s Green Lanterns have been great. The exploration of Jessica’s past, and the totally psychotic & creepy Singularity Jain, are really well-written.

Infinity Countdown #2 (Marvel)
NickZ: The battle for the Infinity Stones continues and new players are drawn into the fray!

Iron Fist #80 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Fat Cobra’s mom is brutal! lol
NickZ: Quite the finale to this series! Team Iron Fist learn that when you make a deal with the devil, there is always a cost!

Kick-Ass #3 (Image)
Infinite Speech: There is no way this ends well for the new Kick-Ass.

Justice League #43 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Priest’s wrap-up issue, which deals (at times clunky) with the fallout from Deathstroke’s actions last issue. There’s some interesting discussions as well about what exactly the Justice League’s limits should be when interfering with others.
NickZ: I sincerely hope that Scott Snyder can make the Justice League great again because DC’s flagship team hasn’t had a remotely good title in years!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #26 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: Shattered Grid is just AMAZING! Higgins nails the aftermath of Tommy’s death and moves the action along perfectly! If you ever liked the Power Rangers you need to get on this event.

Mister Miracle #8 (DC)
Martin: 5/5 stars. Two back-to-back issues about the joys, weariness, and anxieties of parenthood (I should say “fatherhood” – this is Scott Free’s story), combined with the backdrop of the New Genesis – Apokolips War. And it’s AWESOME, both writing & visuals.
NickZ: Tom King and Mitch Gerads continue to redefine storytelling with this incredible series and we get the best line of dialogue you will hear all year, “Batman kills babies.”

Nightwing #43 (DC)
NickZ: Dick just wants to “Netflix and chill” but his annoying little brother and ex-junkie best friend keep “c***blocking” his every effort!

Ninjak vs the Valiant Universe #4 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: This got me ready to see the live action version and it’s a great companion piece!

Superb #9 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: This is comic awesome right here as these young heroes try to find their place in the world and adapt to these new powers!

Superman #45 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. A wrap-up issue that sees the Kents packing up to move back to Metropolis. As boring as that set-up sounds, it’s a nice heart-warming issue with some good humor, character interactions, and does a nice job tying up some loose ends to Tomasi’s run.
NickZ: Bendis better do some really amazing things with big blue to justify ending Gleason and Tomaski’s fantastic run on this book.

Super Sons #15 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Kid Amazo is an extremely dark, disturbing villain for what could have potentially been a kid-friendly book. Jon’s & Damian’s growing relationship is the main reason to read this series, but unfortunately this is its last arc.
NickZ: The Super Sons come face to face with a blast from their short past.

Tales of Suspense #104 (Marvel)
NickZ: This series ends as incredibly as it began. Natasha’s final letters to the boys are character defining and for one, heartbreaking.

Venomized #3 (Marvel)
NickZ: Team Venom loses their most power weapon to the Poisons, but as Master Yoda once said, “there is another!”

Weapon H #2 (Marvel)
NickZ: While this series is in no way bad, the main character is just too new and underdeveloped for me to have any investment into what happens to him on a monthly basis.
Infinite Speech: Ever buy a comic then immediately want a refund?

Weapon X #16 (Marvel)
NickZ: Wolverine and Sabretooth having long drawn out, no holds barred fights are beyond cliche.

X-Men Gold #26 (Marvel)
NickZ: While this marriage seems long over due, the way they are handling it feels very rushed.
