Reality TV is a lucrative business. Add super powers to it and you can have a big time hit. X-Statix was the mutant team of sexy twenty somethings living, loving, and fighting crime. So how did they get to exist and what happened to them? Let’s find out!
Originally called X-Force, which was a name that belonged to an entirely different team of mutants, but they weren’t using it anymore. Thus, a new team was born and ready to appear on camera. The team became a hit, people loved knowing what these heroes are doing, but as their celebrity grew, they became harder to relate to.
Scandals, distancing from the audience, the team needed something to shock the public back to watching them. The team leader, Zeitgeist, and the manager, Coach, were ready to do whatever it took to get that. While trying to rescue a boy band, the entire team but two members were killed, including Zeitgeist. Coach would keep the survivors, U-Go Girl, a teleporter, and the Anarchist, able to sweat acid, and bring in a whole new rest of the team.
The new team members included the new leader The Orphan/Mr. Sensitive, with enhanced senses, Phat, who could control his body fat to do minor shapeshifting, Vivisector, a werewolf, and Dead Girl, a living dead girl, to name a few. The new team would learn that the old X-Force had reformed and really wanted their name back and were willing to fight for it. While the celebrity team was no slouch in combat, the older team was known for ruthlessness and so eventually they conceded and changed their name to the X-Statix.
The team would be filmed by the mysterious alien, Doop, who spoke some distinct language that many people are able to understand even though it is not of any language from Earth and Doop seems to be its only speaker. Even though the name changed, members would still come and go, often through death. Romance would spring up between members, sometimes sweet, sometimes toxic.
Eventually, the team had decided it might be time to retire but on their last mission, they were all killed. For some time, this was the end of the X-Statix until some of them came back from the dead as heroes are wont to do. Not only were some of the old guard back, but there were now kids of the old guard having grown up and ready to be on the team. Seems you can’t keep the X-Statix down for long.
There you have it! One of the more tongue in cheek teams out there. They came out when reality TV was taking off and so it made perfect sense for a hero team filmed. Of all the members, only one has been on the big screen, Zeitgeist has a cameo in Deadpool 2. Will we ever see a TV show of the X-Statix? Time will tell. See you next time!
