Gotta go fast! Too fast for the naked eye. He is too fast, you cannot race him! Who is he? Sonic the hedgehog! The fastest, blue ball of justice. He’s been saving animal lives from robotic prisons for decades in video games and has had comics series for nearly as long. So who is Sonic and how is he so fast? Let’s find out!
Maurice Hedgehog was born to Bernadette and Jules Hedgehog, though he was named after his grandfathers, his other name possibly being Ogilvie, his natural super speed got him the nickname of Sonic. Born on the planet Mobius, Sonic would spend his days running, running for the fun of it and he was the fastest around so he gained a lot of confidence in his skills. Mobius had the Mobians, anthropomorphic animal peoples and Overlanders, human-looking peoples and eventually these two races would go to war when Sonic was very young. The Great War, it was called, the Overlanders used their advanced tech to wage war against the Kingdom of Acorn. Sonic’s father and mother would fight in the war, while the king of Acorn sent all the children of the kingdom, Sonic included, to be hidden away in Knothole Village away from the attacks.
Things were looking bad for the Mobians as the Overlander’s were just outgunning them with their superior technology. In five years time it looked like things would be the end for the Mobians until an Overlander named Julian Kintobor had defected to the Mobians and used his genius inventions to help them win back their lands and fight the Overlanders back off into space. Freed from the Overlander threat, the Kingdom of Acorn was ready to rebuild but learned that their victory was short-lived, Kintobor had only helped them so he could get rid of his own kind so he could take over, using the Overlander weapon, the Roboticizer, he was able to transform the many of the Mobian warriors into robot slaves to do his bidding. He would change his name to Ivo Robotnik to begin his rule of Mobius and his robot armies.
Meanwhile, in Knothole Village, Sonic and the other children had grown in a world at war and thanks to being hidden away, saved from the roboticization of the Kingdom of Acorn. Seeing many adults turned into robots, Sonic and the other survivors formed a band of Freedom Fighters to fight off the robot uprising, with the intent of saving their family and friends. Sonic’s speed allowed him to be a star of the team and being lead by Sally Acorn, the princess of the Kingdom of Acorn. Teaming up with the young, Miles “Tales” Prower, Sonic would lead attacks against Robotnik and his forces.
Years of guerrilla combat and slowly but surely saving lives and helping rehabilitate those who were transformed allowed Sonic and the Freedom Fighters to win back Mobius. Robotnik would use many tactics to keep his rule involving experimental technology and sciences like alternate realities, allowing him to bring in the aide of another him, Dr. Eggman. Sonic would make many new allies who would join in the fight against Robotnik. Realizing that the Freedom Fighters were becoming too big a threat, Robotnik planned his final assault with a doomsday device that would annihilate Knothole and all within from Mobius. During Sonic and Robotnik’s final showdown, the device would be used but it was instead targeted to his Robotnik, killing him off and ending his reign of terror.
Mobius would slowly begin to rebuild, Sonic would learn that his parents had not died during The Great War but been roboticized and get to be with them again after so long. As things were beginning to become a new normal for the Kingdom of Acorn an old enemy returned. The Robotnik from another reality where he was successful at destroying the Mobians entirely, traveled to this reality to finish where the Robotnik before him had failed, now there was Dr. Eggman to deal with. There was a new war to be had since Dr. Eggman had destroyed his version of the Freedom Fighters already, so now Sonic had to deal with an enemy who was ready to exploit their weaknesses and had the control of all the roboticized Mobians, or Robians. Sonic and the Freedom Fighters will continue to do battle with Eggman until Mobius and all free peoples can live without his threat.
There you have it! Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most iconic video game characters in the world. He’s up there with Mario in regards to world recognition. Fun fact, his comics were my introduction into all of comics, so Sonic comimcs will always hold a special place in my heart. He’s been in many games, comics, had several cartoon shows, and even has a live action movie in the works. Sonic Mania is one of the most fun Sonic games in recent memory, so Sonic still has some mileage left. See you next time!
