Humans are adaptable, it’s one of the best traits we have. Throw some unavoidable change and we will have to morph with it to survive. So when an unholy threat enters the world and shows no sign of leaving? It’s up to organizations like Public Safety to step in. What is Public Safety? Let’s find out!
Several years ago, the Gun Devil struck across the planet. In a matter of seconds, thousands of people all over Earth were killed. The fear from these attacks fed into the very nature of Devils, who feed on the fear that makes them. Devils represent the fears of particular things and the Gun Devil broke the floodgates of hell, allowing all manner of Devil to wreck havoc on Earth.
The entire planet agreed to get rid of guns to try and stem the fear of guns so that the Gun Devil may never rear its monstrous head again. Then there was the concern for public safety in defense against the raise of new Devils, far less powerful but still very dangerous. In Japan, Public Safety was born, a Devil Extermination organization who would kill and capture Devils and Fiends. Fiends are when a Devil is able to fully possess a human body, taking over and living as a humanoid with human needs.
Since Devil hunting is hard and rough, there were also allowed to be independent contractors who could do work for hire and leave the toughest Devils to Public Safety. Another aspect of Devil hunting is that Devil Hunters will make contracts with some Devils. Bound to follow rules if a contract is made, it is possible to gain immense power in exchange for something a Devil wants. This can lead to Devil Hunters who are missing body parts are know their years are numbered in exchange for abilities that allow them to fight the worst of the hoards from Hell.
Public Safety provides its members with special black suits that are armored to some degree and have a collection of powerful Devils imprisoned to choose from to gain contracts with. There are different Divisions one can be assigned to and the strangest of them is Division 4. This Division has not only human Devil Hunters but also employs captured Fiends who are allowed to survive as long as they work for Public Safety in extermination their fellow Devils.
While Public Safety is strictly a Japanese organization, there are orders in every country to deal with their own Devil problems. There is some crossover work that can occur when necessary but most countries do not wish to deal with one another’s Devil contracts since they can get pretty sinister. When you make deals with the Devil, you will get burned and every single organization like Public Safety have some truly horrid deals.
There you have it! Chainsaw Man is an action horror manga series with plenty of comedy and touching moments as well. It’s great at throwing new gut-punching twists as we follow the life of Public Safety’s newest member, Denji. Will the series become an anime or film? We’ll have to wait to find out!
