What if your greatest accomplishment in your life lead to the worst experience in your life? Nebula is all too aware of this sensation. Thankfully, that great accomplishment was only the beginning for her strange space pirate life. Who is Nebula and what does space pirating entail? Let’s find out!
Nebula is the name of one of the most notorious space pirates (I think they are just called pirates when you’re actually in space) to traverse the stars. She was already well known even before she took over the Sanctuary II, a warship of the dead at the time, Thanos. She’d claim to be the granddaughter of Thanos and that the ship was her birthright. She’d begin using the ship to wage war with the Skrull, this would bring her into contact with the Avengers, because they were on the receiving end of her massive attacks. She’d almost win against the team, that is, until her brain implant was taken from her and with it, her advantage.
Thanos would be resurrected and learn of this pretender to the throne. He’d find Nebula and with his newly recovered Infinity Gauntlet decide to make Nebula his “child” by leaving her in an near-undead. Nebula was now closer to what she had lied about, one of Thano’s “creations” and trapped in a zombie-like mindset. Only able to escape when Thanos left his body comatose to explore the universe astrally, she’d pick up the Infinity Gauntlet to restore herself and most of reality in the same turn. Now the one with all the power, but not knowing how to fully control it, she’d banish Thanos and begin her own attempt to rule the universe.
It would take the combined efforts of heroes and villains like Thor, Hulk, Doctor Strange, Silver Surfer, and Doctor Doom to name a few, to distract her long enough so that Thanos and Adam Warlock could undo her connection to the Infinity Gauntlet. She’d be imprisoned but her old pirate crew would help her escape and upgrade her cybernetics, but when heroes arrived to stop them, Nebula would kill her crew to help herself escape. She has shown up here and there ever since, sometimes following Gamora and other times fighting Ronan the Accuser.
There you have it! Nebula is far more well know for her appearances in the Guardians of the Galaxy films as Gamora‘s sister and Thanos’ daughter. Her story has changed greatly but she still desires to kill Thanos, maybe we’ll see the cinematic version of this. See you next time!
