Character Spotlight: Jolyne Cujoh

Family is tough for a lot of people. Sometimes you just have people you don’t get along with. Other times, family members are absent when they should be there. Jolyne Cujoh knows about the troubles of family all too well. So what’s going on with her family? Let’s find out!

Jolyne Cujoh is the daughter of Jotaro Kujo and an American woman. Jolyne would rarely see her father, he would be away from home on adventures Jolyne was purposefully left in the dark about. Even when she was very sick as a child, Jolyne’s father wouldn’t come home to see her. His absence led to Jolyne’s growing frustration with her dad. When she was fourteen years old, Jolyne would be mistakenly blamed for a theft she did not commit. Her mother sided with her while her father did not believe her and would not bail her out or even come to visit her.

This situation was the final straw for Jolyne’s mother, her parents divorced and Jolyne grew to resent her father more and more. This time in jail lead Jolyne into a life of delinquency, joining a gang, she would even make it so her last name went from Kujo, to the more Americanized (to be more like her mother) Cujoh. She would eventually grow out of her criminal phase, and by the time she was of college-age she was taking her studies seriously.

Finding a boyfriend in Romeo Jisso, Jolyne’s life was looking up, that is, until a horrible car accident. The two had been driving, when Romeo accidentally killed someone with a collision. Jolyne tried to call for an ambulance but Romeo would beg Jolyne to help him keep this a secret as it could ruin his aspirations in academia. They would put the body in the trunk of the car and Romeo would dispose of the car and the body. The authorities were able to find the vehicle, along with the body, and found Jolyne’s fingerprints on the trunk. She was arrested and sent to prison.

While in prison, she would befriend fellow inmate, Ermes Costello who would show her the ropes of prison life. Jolyne’s mother would be sure to give her a care package of clothes along with a locket Jolyne’s father wanted her to have in case of an emergency that contained a photo of her parents, back when they were together. Jolyne would nick herself on the pendant, which had been housing a magical arrowhead that granted Jolyne a Stand once cut by it. Still unaware of her new powers, Jolyne would slowly come to realize it when she could hear from far away, because her finger had unraveled like she was made of yarn, the string that was her appendage allowed her to sense from it.

Ermes would get attacked by guards and Jolyne would able to use her Stand to use her string self to reach them and stop their assault. Figuring that this new power must be due to her father’s gift, she begins to wonder what was going on with him and his life. To make matters worse, Jolyne was able to learn that her lawyer and Romeo were working together to get Jolyne locked up for the crime entirely, so that Romeo gets off scot free. Jolyne would be sentenced to fifteen years and vows to use her powers to survive prison and get out as soon as possible with her powers to aide her.

Her new cellmate, Gwess, steals the locket from Jolyne getting her own Stand using its power to shrink Jolyne, leading to Jolyne having her Stand fully manifest its humanoid form to rescue herself. Naming her Stand Stone Free, Jolyne would realize she had to make sure no one else takes advantage of her ever again. Her bizarre adventure was only beginning.

There you have it! Jolyne Cujoh is the first and only female lead JoJo thus far in the Joestar lineage. She’s also technically the last of this reality. Things get even more bizarre as we go forward, new timelines, new incarnations. It all seems to be the fallout of Jolyne’s encounters with stranger and stranger Stand users. Confused? Maybe you should check out Jolyne’s journey! See you next time!
